Have a Hawthorne girls 26 inch all chrome with a front tank (with a on/off switch and horn button) and a rear rack that has a battery holder at the end that holds two D cell batteries and has a red plastic lens cover for back light, has green paint on the front tank and green paint on the rear rack also on chain guard a green stripe on top of chrome and has "Hawthorne" painted white in the green paint, it has chrome fenders and a simulated front truss on fork, also has a persons white seat with springs and a chrome type rod? guard? that goes around the back of seat, I assume this bike is a early 60's or mid 60's has a 68- 69 bike license on from the town that I live in, any help would be appreciated.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   what vintage / value? posted by Joel on 2/6/2001 at 11:22:31 AM
60s sounds about right.... Should have 1.75" tires. Rollfast made bikes for Wards/Hawthorne during that time. If you compare it to pictures of other Hawthorne and Rollfast bikes you can probably narrow down the year. Sounds like a deluxe model w/taillight, crash guard seat,...

MIDDLEWEIGHT:   Looking for 65 Murray Meteor Flite posted by: Jim Euler on 2/5/2001 at 8:24:52 PM
Looking for a 1965 Murray Meteor Flite; will consider any
condition, but of course would prefer complete and original.
I know, I know, what are the odds . . . Anybody??

RE:MIDDLEWEIGHT:   Looking for 65 Murray Meteor Flite posted by bikeyard on 2/7/2001 at 5:27:17 AM
I have two mens and 2 womens. Of course the mens are not complete but both have tanks(missing lens) and the womens are in better condition. I could get you some pics later in the week. Maybe a start at least.

bikeyard: that would be great. I'm interested in seeing what
you've got. Thanks. (I also e-mailed you)

RE:RE:MIDDLEWEIGHT:   Looking for 65 Murray Meteor Flite posted by Mike Stone on 2/7/2001 at 11:00:59 AM
Just for your reference, not all Meteor Flite bikes had lights on the tanks. I have an early girl's Meteor Flite with a tank that has no lights.

The tank was painted with emerald green and white paint. The letters "Murray" were gold paint with red shadowing; not decals.

On one of Tom Findley's web pages, he states that more of these Murray Space-agers (all of similar design) were produced than Sting-rays and Krates. This is surprising considering that I see more Sting-rays and Krates than these cool Space-agers. Maybe fewer of the Space-agers survived the dumpster than the muscle-bikes.

Anyway, I understand the fascination. Good luck with you search.

Mike

I would like to get $100 for it. I have a picture to e mail.

It turns out that this bike is probably a Hornet. It has the "straight bar" frame not the cantaliever style. Thank you all for that info. Is any one interested in a Hornet?

WANTED:   Where can I find a quality wicker bike basket? posted by: Don on 2/3/2001 at 8:20:37 PM
Where can I find a good wicker, or willow, bike basket? My wife has always wanted one on the front of her balloon tire bike. I've seen just a couple in the local bike shops, but the seem to be made poorly. I remember that some of these were of very high quality, but I have'nt been able to find one.

RE:WANTED:   Where can I find a quality wicker bike basket? posted by jeff on 2/6/2001 at 5:34:17 PM
J&B importers sells a wicker basket that is pretty decent, it is held on by leather straps. many bike shops can order from j&b, but if you can't find one locally, give jeff at colorado bicycling adventures a call 970-586-4241

I'm trying to find out any information on who actually built this bike. The Head Badge says ZENITH made by Marshall Wells Company. This is a boys 26" Balloon Tire Bike. Almost looks like a RollFast. Any info would be excellent!!

I am not familiar with that brand but if it looks like a Rollfast, it probably is. Rollfast made lots of department store bikes.

Bike was professionally repainted in coppertone and rechromed by the previous owner. Bike looks great. It comes with a half tank, springer, headlight, white walled tires and rear rack. If you are looking for middleweight that needs nothing done to it heres your opportunity to pick one up. Lightning Darts? Balloon tires? Doesn't sound like an 80s bike. Could you provide more info?

RE:RE:BALLOON:   Searching for posted by jimmy on 1/30/2001 at 8:44:11 PM
carlise went out of business in 1984 i belive there is a flea market here where i live has a murray montery girls bike and it has the w/w lighting darts and it's the mid 80's plus i just bought a western flyer boys bike with the same tires and it's the mid 80's too

RE:BALLOON:   Searching for posted by Gordon on 1/31/2001 at 7:47:17 AM
I don't know when the manufacturing source of Carlisle tires changed, but the earlier ones are marked "Made in USA" and the later ones "Made in Taiwan". I have found several of what I call "New Old Style" bikes with the Taiwanese Carlisles. These bikes are often sold in the discount stores and are styled after the old cruisers.

RE:RE:BALLOON:   Searching for posted by ChristopherRobin on 2/1/2001 at 12:28:17 PM
Some Taiwaneese company got their hands on the molds that make the tires and moved the operation to where labor is cheap and Bang-Zoom they're making tires! It is not the first time we all have seen this. But it does kind of throw you to see it.

RE:BALLOON:   Searching for posted by todjob on 2/6/2001 at 6:12:27 PM
THE stickers you are asking about you can get one of two ways take a hand held scanner scan them put it on disk and take it to a print shop have them cleaned up and will print newones if they are not the bike name no one will ask for patent info i.e. schwinn murray ect.
or you can contact the co. and request a sticker set
if its the headbadge one (the sticker up front between the handle bars and front tire) you might concider finding an older metal one to put on.
