Sure looks like a ca. 1937-9 Schwinn. But if it is, it really ought to have a serial number under the bottom bracket. I read somewhere that the early numbers were stamped less neatly; keep looking. That crank appears to be a dogleg Schwinn with the classic sweetheart chainwheel. You could take it out and see if it says AS&Co or something between the bearings. Originally had a center stand instead of a kickstand, and the rims would have had fairly deep centers. Sweet breezer-style frame...

Good call as always, sam. Perhaps those cranks came from another bike? It clearly wasn't stock...

I have a friend who also owns a True Value tagged bike like yours, same sweet-heart crankset which led us to believe it was built by Schwinn too. The front tag also has the name of the wholeseller on it, a name which aludes me at the moment. He restored his this past winter and displayed it at the Pana vintage bicycle show this summer, maybe someone here seen it.

BALLOON:   Ser # location? posted by: Dean in Ct. on 9/29/2005 at 8:48:07 PM
Here's a fairly easy one I hope. Where should I be looking for a # on my Columbia bicycle? I believe it to be from the 30's or 40"s

Usually Columbia serial #'s are located either on the bottom crankshaft or the rear left dropout. Once you've located it, you can click on this site for serial # info. Good luck!
