| This is a repost from the lightweight discussion. I can't work the pic stuff but can email some if you contact me through my email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I bought this bike at an antique store and would like to restore. Looks all original except seat cover. Almost identical to Western Flyer golden anniversary issue except tank has light that wraps around forks and looks like owl eyes when they meet in the front. I don't have internal parts for it or switch and can't find anything that is close to the parts. Is this a rare light configuration? Also need the lens cover for the back but have the rest. It has a Komet Super hub and had original tires from Western Auto but had to replace because of cracking. Need help in restoring or should I? Thanks for any help! Terri|

Don't restore it - restoration can kill it's value. Just clean it up.

From your description, it sounds like you have one of the "Flyer" series; there was a Sabre Flyer, Silver Flyer, Sonic Flyer and Cosmic Flyer. These were all middleweights (26 x 1.75 tires) from the late 50's through the early 60's. All of these had the tank and lights that wrapped around the headtube. Since you need the lens cover for the back, I'm guessing the carrier has a light unit instead of reflectors, which is leading me to believe it may be a Sabre Flyer. Does the bike have a spring fork and does the chainguard have anything on it? If you'll send a photo(s) I'll try to ID it further.
| Jim, I don't know how to upload the pic stuff but yes it has a light on the back and spring fork. There is also a reflector on the rear tire fender which all fenders are chrome as well as the chain guard. It is all black except the front forks are orange on the lower half. Only other detail is some slight white pin striping on forks and the light rack in the back. The tires which I believe are original are solid black. Any ideas of value? Hope this helps.|
| It sounds more and more like the Sabre Flyer. It was the deluxe middleweight for Western Flyer, with the jeweled pedals, Mylar trimmed saddle and the Davis Deluxe whitewall tires. In 1962, it retailed for $62.95. As to value, the middleweights are rising in popularity but don't have the collector following of the balloon tire bikes and especially the pre-war bikes, so your bike (in good to excellent condition) could range from $100 to $300. If someone needed that particular model to complete a collection, then the value would be whatever they wanted to pay. In the case of the lights, most bikes of that era have had batteries left in them and thus rusted the battery tray. Sometimes battery trays from similar style bikes can be substituted, but then usually require you to drill some holes in your tank (since the screw locations are different). Best bet is to try to find a good tray from that particular model, but then you may spend several years or more. If your daughter wants to ride it, why not just get an aftermarket modern light that mounts on the handlebars? They are infinitely brighter than the old ones, and can be removed so no damage is done to the originality of the bike. Also, make sure to get the rear hub repacked. The grease tends to harden over 40 years, and you need to be able to stop when you want! |
| Thanks, I just sent pics to your email and then found your note. Think we will just go ahead and repaint. I haven't looked at the tray in the back yet but it might be too rusted to fix. It rides great and stops fine, so maybe someone who owned it before did some work on it. Thanks again, Terri|
| Hi. I have a blue & white girl's bike I found at flea market for $10. The handlebar grips are white and say "Schwinn", but the medalion thing on the front of the bike says "Jet." The only other markings I can find are "N+S" on the kickstand, and what looks like the word "Komet" on the brake (where it attaches to frame on the left rear part of the bike.)|
On the upright stem that goes to the seat there is a sticker close to the pedals that says "Made in West Germany."

| Need help identifying year of my 26" Schwinn American Flyer sold by the Louisville Cycle Company. The ID number is C63719, I has a sweetheart skip tooth sprocket, New departure coaster brake and has the red and gold Schwinn Chicago decal on the seat post. I also have a Schwinn frame and chome tank ID #C53333. Is this the correct frame for a Black Phantom?|
| Are the numbers on the left rear dropout, Andy? If so, 52-53 is safe. The skiptooth is usually associated with prewar but they always used what they had, and furthermore someone may have have changed it along the way. Serial numbers don't translate to models; the same frame could be a Phantom, a b-6 (standard autocycle) or a rebadge.|
| My mom recently gave me her bike from when she was little. A little research tells me it's probably a Colorflow, possibly from the early 50's. Does anyone know where I can get more infoon the year or possibly parts on these for restoration? I really only need the back reflector and headlight|
