Check out the split fork, ladies Humber Sports on eBay. The colour (looks like robins egg blue with pale cream mudguards) is kinda cool and typical of the mid 50s when the English cycle companies wanted a new look. The starting bid is steep at $150, about the max value I would reckon but looks a nice machine.

I recently purchased a NOS in-the-box Lucas cyclometer on e-bay, the type which clamps to your front axle with a strike pin attached to the spokes. Upon the front wheel turning, the strike pin hits a little wheel on the counter, and this sets the counter in motion.

Well, the counter doesn't budge one iota, no matter how many times I spin the counter wheel round. It still reads "zero." Has anyone here ever had trouble with these things?

I'm getting frustrated and ready to leave negative feedback for this seller, who won't accept a return.

Have you tried an agressive penetrating oil like Tri-flo or Kroil? Even NOS cyclometers dryout after awhile.

David, another suggestion would be to try mounting it on the other side of the front fork. I seem to remember that they do not run in either direction and you cannot wind them back so perhaps you are just turning it the wrong way? Good luck, Ian.

I use a similar item on my greenways rider David, not a Lucas brand but the same thing. Have you contacted the seller and explained the situation to him/her and asked for an adjustment? Was is represented in the auction as 'working' or just NOS? Ususally a diplomatic note to a seller will bring about satisfaction, if no resolve can be found there feddback is your last recourse. Probably, I'd leave a Neutral, after all you DID recieve the item, right?

Does your Lucas have a re-set feature? If so, try this... Zero it out and then spin the drive cog clockwise for about 4-6 COMPLETE turns... then check the milage reading.

As Calvert said, it might just need a little squirt to free things up. But I don't think you'll need to change which side you mount it on. They (at least the one I have) get mounted on the right fork leg. Just change where the pin strikes the cog. Hitting from the bottom will make it spin clockwise, from the top anti-clockwise. Also, the pin just needs to catch the tip of the cog tooth, enough to give you a little tink as it passes. Too deep and you'll get a thunk... not good.

Tried squirting tons of Tri-Flo, revolving the little cog-wheel multiple times, even rode for a couple miles with the strike pin hitting it correctly. The numbers don't move a bit. It feels like something is catching. Something is probably stuck inside. The seller represented the item as NOS and claims it worked before he mailed it, but he won't take it back. So now I'm looking for a new cyclometer, if anyone has one.

Sounds like it's time to do an autopsy on it David. Open it up and see what's wrong. If you screw it up, you're not out anything... right? Who knows, you just might get it working!

You cannot open one of these up. They suggested that you don't even try.
I have articles on Lucas and advertisments stuff and they said to return it to where you bought it.
I would take this one on the chin and try again. Keep the box for display!

This same dealer also offers the IRC Roadster tyre in a gumwall which would be 'correct' for the Sports type machines from the mid 1960s until Dunlop came out with the tyres with the two thin white lines. My Rudge is lithe and nimble on her Michelins so might hold off even if the tread pattern is all wrong for an English cycle. One of these days someone will find a container load of NOS Dunlop Roadster tyres, I just know it!

I've used plenty of IRC brand tires and have Kendas now on my DL1. IMO, the nylon construction is a big improvement over the old cotton-cord Dunlops and Michelins, which give new meaning to the term "rotting carcass."

I have used IRC tires and they tend to develop cracks in the tread after a year. The Kendas were OK but my favorite are made by Tri-Sport and sold under the Specialized name. They are high pressure tires and wear very well.

I have had these on my Raleigh "Sports" before, and they seemed more or less adequate to me. I have an older one on my old DL-1, and it works fine. I would not call them performance tyres though. I bought brand new Semperits once for my DL-1, and they started rotting after only a few months, and they weren't cheap either($20 a piece). The IRC will probably suit you just fine for everyday use.

Hello--I am trying to find a tire that will fit the front wheel of my Hercules cycle truck, and would appreciate any insights. The bike has rims to accommodate rod brakes. A Schwinn 26 X 1 3/4 tire fits perfectly on the rear. The front wheel is another matter. The Schwinn 20 X 1 3/4 is too big. A 20 X 1.75 seems to fit, but the rim is so shallow that part of the bead pops out when the tire is fully inflated. Is a 20 inch "middleweight" tire available that will seat properly on a rod-brake rim? Thanks.

Kevin, despite what I told you in my email to you it might well be that you need to look for a 20 x 2 tyre, My understanding is that in older tyre sizes the outside diameter stayed constant to the marked size and that the rim bead seating size was then adjusted to suit the inside diameter of the tyre. If a 20 x 1 3/4 is too loose then the rim must have been made for a tyre with a sidewall that was taller than that on the 1 3/4, perhaps a 2" wide tyre has the taller sidewall. If so then the rim diameter will be smaller to keep the O.D. at 20". I know it is very difficult to measure the bead seat diameter of a tyre but perhaps you could measure your rim seat diameter and compare it with the 20" Schwinn rim you have. Hi guys, I have a giels 24 in "Space Rider" bike that is just like a "Sports" only for a child, or tiny adult. It works as is, and can be ridden as it sits. It looks OK, but could use a little TLC. Chrome is mostly OK. Three speed with coaster brake works, the brakes are a little weak depending on which gear you're in, but it has Raleigh hand brake in front for safety. I really want to sell it to someone who is "into" raleighs as I know they want their kids involved too. I only want $35 plus shipping of about $20. I know of at least 3 Raleigh roadsters that will be there
for sale. I sold one of roadsters last year to a guy who primarily rides light weights ( a 72 Paramount and a PX-10)
and he tells me he loves it. I'm on the fence about selling my very fresh early 40's Herc rod-braker, 26" westwoods, decal badge, All-weather, but too short for me at 22" c-t.
Too pretty to sell but too short to ride and I do need the space....so we'll see.....

Seems like most of the shopping I do these days is on Ebay.
I really miss getting to meet old friends and actually handling
the goods before parting with my hard-earned bucks.

I'm gonna try to get up to Alan Kinsey's long-enduring swap
in Des Moines later this year but meanwhile in the heat of the
summer, this swap in KC is the best in the MidWest.
We even have a Pub Cruise the night before.

Collectors and pickers from all over have been calling in
for directions and information so we've had to scramble

Chris' spelling is a little off. This is the lawsuit brought by SRAM against Shimano accusing them of dumping. Shimano appealed and lost and is required to pay $9M damages I think. Use Google search for "SRAM Shimano appeal" You should be able to find some articles in the trade press. I haven't seen anything recently, so I think Chris is overanxious about internal hubs. Sun Race/Sturmey should be exporting new parts from Taiwan soon according to the importer.

I found this oil drenched navy blue ladies bicycle at the end of a driveway. It has Hercules Bicycle and Motor Co. etc on head , serial no on frame is "VF 7448" and barely readable Hercules on the bottom of the enclosed chainguard. It has fully functional front/rear rod brakes, Sturmey- Archer 3 speed hub with "K 6" designation(stamped in a different font style) , wicker basket, bell- in short its kinda cool!. You have a pre-WW2, and pre-Raleigh, 1936 Hercules with a K series hub. Do be careful the hub internals are not as robust as the later AW series. I have a similar gents model, very pleasant to ride and own. Enjoy your new find. Matthew

I've got something to add regarding the Popular on e-bay, item 2122673200.
From a 1937 UK catalogue the Popular, also known as the Model 1, was the base model in the 28" wheel range, with single speed, no chainguard or lights. Three speed gears was an option.The largest stock frame size was 26", and I would say the cycle offered is that size or possibly even taller. However I don't think there is any accurate way of establishing exact model or name at this stage, since as has been pointed out accessories could have been added or removed later.
However, I have UK Raleighs from 1937 and 1948, both of which still have the style of handlebars that have no forward sweep to them, whereas the bike pictured has a forward sweep to the 'bars, so 1951 could be correct. I'd say the chain ring looks non-Raleigh, and the fender stays do not match.
As for condition my 1937 bike was much like that when I got it, and the enamel on the frame cut back like new. Repaint the fenders, strip the wheels and paint the rims, do your best on the remaining chrome and it would not look too bad.

Unfortunately I don't have the full 1937 catalogue, just one photocopy of the page showing my bike. Had another look at the bike on e-bay - that is an enormous frame - could it be a 28" frame?

I had the amazing idea to ask the seller...
Tire size is 26 x 1 1/2 and that would make the frame size 25 or 26, if my crude measuring on the screen is believable.

Butlins?!! No, I think you mean BRITAIN'S Best Bicycle ("since 1869"). This was the trademark Rudge slogan and on most of their cycles. Yet annoyingly and amazingly not one of the transfers stocked by Lloyds!!! @&$#@! Butlins is a British holiday camp of the sort surely not patronised by the people who would buy a Rudge......

Love to hear more about your 1939 model, a "real" Rudge, pre-Raleigh then and made in Coventry, not Nottingham.

This afternoon a friend gave me a Raleigh road bike. I will retore it, however, I know nothing about the bike. The name of the bike has been rubbed off the top tube. But, on the rear fender Bluemels Club Special is stamped. The components are Suntour (V-GTluxe, etc.) The color is dark green with black bands. The serial number is 2729684. Can anyone tell me the age, etc of this bike? Thank you.

It sounds like you have a Raleigh Gran Prix and it might come from the 70's or early 80's. If it has cottered cranks (arms "bolted" on to the spindle) it would be a 70's model. They had Simplex derailleurs in the 70's but many people swapped out for Suntour later on. They were speced with them on later models.

Weinmann brakes would be for an older bike. Dia Compe for a newer one.

Hi,

I posted to the wrong discussion area so I'm going to try this again :)

We found in our sub-basement 3 bikes when we bought our house. One is a Raleigh Space Rider. It's aqua/blue and is in great shape. The style looks like 60's/70's but I can not find a serial number on it anywhere. It does not change gears and the brakes are just to peddle backwards. My husband dusted it off and pumped up the breaks and every boy in the neighborhood wanted a turn on this bike! It does look like a girl's bike to me (no bar across like a boys) but the color and name look like a boy.

I can't believe was in such good shape as our sub-basement is a dirt floor and I have no idea how many years this bike sat down there.

The pictures show a red bike with the top tube frame and a blue bike with the step-through frame. I doesn't appear that the top tube was removable, like on some kids' bikes.

You've got a good bike that will outlast a lot of kids if you take a little care of it.

Thank you! I guess the aqua/blue is Horizon Blue :) I really wanted to know how old it was. My 9yo son didn't want it until the kids on the street were very interested in it and took turns riding it. Now he's claimed it as his own. I think it's a great looking bike and we will take good care of it.

Take a look at the angles on this bike! The rear backstay is almost straight up. Certainly different than the basic D.L.1.

You never see these offered.
Now the thought that some of these are being tossed out into the trash has me on the floor, howling, and rolling about crying uncontrollably.
This bike is in England. Not my auction, no relation to seller.
I have to go to England and save these!

I wonder what the selling point was when this machine was new? Maybe "sir, you'll never be thrown over the handle bars with the 'Popular'! what a great looking bike it would be, restored with accessories such as dynohub, Brooks B-133, one could almost fall asleep riding it! I do want to know if these are rare in Europe and othe parts of the world, I've never seen one.

I believe this bike is a lot older than most. Possibly back into the 20's or early thirties'. I think it must have a replacement wheel. It in fact would be TOO cool restored to fight trim again.

Yikes! OK, this is a cool old Raleigh but take a close look-- she's a mess!! If you have stock in a chrome replating shop, then this is your machine. I thought my 1949 Rudge was rough but this poor lady has spent too many damp English winters in a garden shed. Maybe all old rusty roadsters look alike but every British tip has a couple of these, trust me. Until recently, you'd also find them tossed against every iron railing in Oxford; never locked! Alas, Oxford is filled with the same wretched mountain bikes and Asian-made whatevers nowadays.

I do not show a Raleigh "Popular" in my mid 1950s Raleigh UK catalogue. Nor is there is a comparable looking machine in my 1949 Rudge UK catalogue. So maybe indeed she's older than her 1951 AW hub. A lot of these light roadsters were single speed at the onset.

WRONG: my c. 1953 UK catalogue DOES show a Raleigh Popular, model no. 1, frame sizes 24" gents only, 28" Westwood rims. Single speed was STANDARD fit. Price: £15 4 s. 5 d.; an AW hub cost an extra £2 9 d. Saddle could be a B66 or a Terry's mattress as on this machine.

Pulled it apart, dropped it in, turned it on. it whirred, vibrated, heated up.
Next day, OOH! squeaky clean Sturmey- Archer hub innard parts!
some oil and I'm good to go.

Ultrasonic parts cleaners are awesome. Now I'm gonna clean everything!
A massive de- gumping effort in underway. Finding a shop that sells the Phil green grease for bearings is not easy.

What type American bike is this?
It looks restored. Where they found a Lone Ranger Big- Little book that does not have yellowed pages I don't know. Photocopied?
Somebody tell me to just shut up and watch the movie!

It looks like a cool flick. I may splurge and see it first-run. I've seen some of the sites where it was filmed last February. At one location, (perhaps where a funeral scene was filmed?) scenery crews built a brick wall and a circular driveway at an historic mansion. It was unseasonably warm, but they added fake snow on the grounds. It was a little disconcerting to suddenly see a brick wall around the house and then to see the local paper's photo of snow in that warm week. After filming, they dismantled the wall and replanted grass. Don't wonder why movies cost 10 zillion dollars.
