Saw two more bikes, Spring cleaning is here! Keep your eyes posted fellas! This one was a Sears Free Spirit with Ted Williams sigature on it. Nothing special so I gave it a look over and left it. The mountain bike I didn't touch.
Later on went past the place and it was gone. If I didn't want it who else would? Well, it's probably gonna be ridden again! Somebody will pay to put new tires on it and get it ridable again. Perhaps somebody without a car will literally be living on it and depending on it for a means of transportation. A Sears Free Spirit 10 speed? Yes, it happens! I'm shaking me head at the thought because this is junk and the componets have no value. Perhaps somebody needed a working part and this was free. Are old 10 speed bikes being picked up and are they leaving the mountain bikes instead?

I just picked up a nice OLD Gitane roadracer complete with a steel three piece crank set with replacable chainrings,leather saddle, four speed freewheel, etc...
The guy who put it out was sitting in front of his house, so I asked if I could take it, and he says "You can have anything you want baby" ( he was gay), well, I just took the bike, and frankly that was good enough, you know? But, the point is you never know WHAT you'll turn up at the friggin' curb :-)

I forgot to mention that I also recently found a Schwinn "World something-or-other" with a chrom-moly frame and various more or less cool Shimano/Normandy/Suntour (whatever) parts. I wanna try to make a tandem with it.

I saw a large frame Japaneese Raleigh mens bike. Complete! I left it there because I'm a picky vulture and the Japaneese Raleigh's have no charm.
3 bikes out at once and the Schwinn 3 speed I grabbed! Another red Schwinn with an Alvit derailer but this is the one with the large metal coverings over the jockey wheels. I don't collect those versions of Alvits. Seems Schwinn was worried about the derailer chain comming off the jockey wheels.
A little kids bike complete. The kids bikes really bother me because somewhere there is somebody who would love to have it.
Actually this is true with every bicycle I see.
I was given "The Look" today.
I 'll try my best to describe it. The fellow curled up his lip in an annoyed, idiotic, nasty,plain ugly, look.
I read disgust and bemusement in his face. Like he was better and because of the way he acted there, he was not. Yea, I noticed him. I'm having too much fun to mind.
People can be very direct and aggressive and take you by surprise. Be polite and get outta there. The ladies never say a thing like that (to me anyways) and if they do speak at all, then they need some heavy thing they couldn't lift carried out. Like a Piano that: "Was here when I moved in"
Besides, if you dally then somebody else will beat you to something 4 streets over. As long as people don't come up and grab me as I be going about my business, then were all cool.

Not my auction, no relation to seller.
Needs a good cleaning but those rims! They look pitted and possible lifting/ peeling chrome?
Spoke nipples need a good cleaning in ammonia but ... Oh, They don't look good.
This always bothered me finding a DL1 from this point in time looking like this one. Raleigh obviously changed/ cheapened their chrome standards in the 1970's and it shows.
A good cleaning, an complete overhaul, finding a rear reflector, a good scrubbing and it'll shine!
It's just those rims! Not a pretty picture! Am I seeing peeled chrome on that crank?

I stood up on tip toes and looked this pair of bikes over one time. The chrome was pitted on the rims. They were beautiful and mint and dust covered but I moaned, "Oh, they're 1970's era" and I cast a wary eye at the rims.
(This was not this bike on e- bay)
This is all depending on what the bike is selling for. Or rather how much money you have at your disposal to spend on a bicycle. This is a wonderful bike but if you have a bit extra I would go for the one that has good chrome plate or decent "brightwork" as it is called. Once again depends on how much extra you are gonna be paying for something complete and in good shape that won't need you going after replacing wheel rims. Sometimes it's better to replace something and re- build it rather than save for a mint example. The mint condition or very good ones go high and why spend 5 or 600.00 or more when you can get one for 250.00 or so and re-place rims. I dunno, you have to take into account the cost of the rims, shipping and wheel building and the costs for new spokes too.
After so many years of these I want the extra rare, special, all tricked out versions of these. I was commenting on the crank's lifted chrome but it is not so hard to find another one of these cranks off of another Raleigh. This one on e- bay has the 6 1/2 inch cranks anyways. The 7 inch cranks are a bit more difficult to find. This was always a strange bike to buy, sell, trade and collect in it's own right and then you put it up on e- bay with the nature of e- bay and then toss in another one or two selling at the same time. Who knows?
This e- bay bike is good for somebody just getting into these and who is not disuaded by having to search for rims and pick up a set. I have trash picked these, paid 250.00 for them and higher. These bicycles vary in what sellers ask. They vary in what e- bay and the bidders push it to.
They vary in what a buyer will pay for one. Especially one with flaws. Lifted chrome will interfere with brake rims and chew up shoes. These rod brake shoes go from 5- 20.00 each, depending on where you find them for sale. Then there is shipping too. Condition is important with these as with other things.
Perhaps if somebody could give a helpful hint on where a set of rim could be found.
We have been down this alley before about replacement rims.
Rims can be $15.00 each and then these go higher. Re-plating a rim is not worth it unless it is special and cannot be replaced.
A excellent commuter bike this is.

All this talk of chrome... well I like my 1940s-50s blue-tinged Rhodesian chrome as much as anyone else. But I am increasingly taken with the pre-war "all-weather", all-black roadsters. Everything black enamel. Glorious British Bike Black. Dipped. Dunked. Bathed in licorice black enamel. Rims, handlebars, cranks, chainwheel, brake bits, seat post. Everything. Except spokes. No fancy markings just gilt carriage lining, maker's crest on the rear mudguard and head, name on the enclosed gearcase. A huge Lucas or early S/A headlamp. Subtle. Pure understated elegance.

Chrome is a greatly overated finish for metal. It is purely cosmetic and does not protect the surface at all well. It depends greatly on the base plating, i.e. copper, zinc, nickle etc. It is also a nasty substance and very toxic. I remember an accident at a local plating works where chrome oxide solution leaked into a nearby stream. It killed everything downstream for 30 miles! I prefer nickle for appearance or cadmium. Most of my old roadsters have painted rims and nickle handlebars. Although I really do like my stainless steel raleigh rims on my Spuberbes.

Been looking around here.. and other places, but cannot seem to find any info on the Raleigh "Glide". Am in the process of acquiring a 5 bike lot. Three Sports, a Sprite... and a Glide.

Any input that might ameliorate my obfuscation would be greatly appreciated!

It's likely a Glider...they were a Canadian maker...at some point Raleigh took over the manufacturing and sold a lot of them through the Eatons department stores across Canada. Rebranding. I've got a pre-Raleigh early double top tube model...they made a lot of Sports models...even some Record imitation ten speeds.

Decent quality that was typical of Raleigh in the 60's that started to fade in the 70's. The Sports models often had chrome fenders, white wall tyres, white Brooks Mattress saddle and white pedals...kinda sharp.

Aren't they higher-level than a Sports? The Glider's I've seen have locking forks. And they're built in Nottingham.

They may have made a locking fork model...they didn't distinguish between models. A 28" wheeled roadster, a 3 speed Sports or a 10 speed "racer" were all named "Gliders". Most were made in Nottingham...they have that telltale "Made in England" script on the top tubes. Of course they have the Raleigh 26 tpi threaded BB's and headsets. Pre-Raleigh Gliders subscribed to BSC standards.

I arrived just like last year at 8 AM. Last year there were about 5 sellers set up by that time. After a few hours there were probably 10 sellers with about 100+ bikes and a lot of parts. This time when I arrived at 8 there was no one, just a cold empty lot. Yes it was cold but clear and that should not have stopped anyone. I went to the shop around the corner and saw a posting just like on the web for a start time of 8:30 so I decided to grab some breakfast and come back. Now it is 8:45 and still a cold empty lot. Soon after came Curtis Anthony a local shop owner and he set up a couple of bikes and small parts bin. 15 minutes later came another seller with a pick up truck with about 7 bikes. One okay bike but the rest were trash finds and not worth speaking about. Then came some bikes out of the shop sponsoring the meet. A 1901 roadster and a 1925 cross bar roadster like on sale at Copake. They were asking some decent bucks for these. I believe $895 for the former and $695 for the latter. Then came someone with 3 bikes. A nice Rudge girls racing bike from the fifties that was in great condition with Reynolds 531 tubing and some nice components. That was around $535 and his other two bikes were a roadster for around $400 and another plain Raleigh for $175. Some like me were buyers without anything to buy so we showed some of our bikes. I did see one person show up with a 1963 Roadster that he sold for under $200. Around 11 Sam showed up with about 7 bikes and I am not sure what he sold if anything. All toll there were only 27 bikes including those that showed up for display. I counted them so I know. This was the worst showing since this started a few years ago. Not sure why, some thought it was the cold weather, some thought the time change freaked people out while still others blamed the recession. I am not sure what happened but this was a great event and I hope it comes back to life next year.

Yeah, well Saturday was rainy, and I did not want to take my roadster out in the rain. Sunday dawned real cold, and I just had too much to do:-( I am sorry I missed it anyway. I hope next year they hold the weekend some time in late May, or early June so that we can ride our beautiful roadsters into the wee hours without freezing to death, or getting salt all over them!

Nice rider there Scott! First off Pee Wee would have not been caught dead on an English Roadster... dude was a balloner man to the end.

Ok, back your bike... I'm guessing you dated the bike by the rear hub stamping? Good! Oh btw nice hub shiners there!

I just picked up a 1965 "Crown", which like yours, was made in England for the New York based Rollfast Comapny. Same basic bike just it has "Crown" where yous says "Rollfast"... though both appear to have that nifty little multi-colored "Made in England" decal.

I paid $10 for mine, add in another $10 for tires, tubes & rim bands plus $18 to have the bottom bracket & head bearings serviced (Yeah, I get GOOD prices at the LBS LOL) and I feel the bike was worth every bit of the $38 I spent on it.

I'm sure there are a bunch of purists out there that would snob up at a bike like this because it dosen't say Phillips, Raleigh or even Robin Hood. I don't know for a fact but I'd bet dollars against donuts that the frame came off the same line.

The best thing you could do is to give your new bike a bath... plenty of hot soapy water, an old cloth and a couple of old brushes (make sure one is a toothbrush) and do the old clean & rinse. When you're done dry her down and go for a well deserved ride. Now the fun begins... find yourself a nice comfortable place to work and take it apart. Wheels, fenders, seat & post, chainguard, kickstand, brakes, bars and neck the whole deal. NOW set to detailing everything... use copper wool (a pot scrubber) followed by some chrome cleaner/polish on your chrome. I like the Meguiars Cleaned/Wax to breathe life back into the old, tired paint. Ajax or Soft Scrub works wonders on making your cable housings look new again.

While it's apart might as well do a bearing service... after all the grease is HOW OLD? Find an old 26" fork and clamp it in a vise for checking the rims for true. Once you've got everything bright & shiney put it all back together, adjust it, wipe off the finger prints and grease smears and stand back and admire your work. It won't look like the same bike... oh, that extra washer, it goes in your right front pants pocket LOL Figure on at least 12-18 hours depending.

What it's worth, I wouldn't take a dime less than $200 for mine.

thanks for the iformation i got mine free :) Amish people sat it out in their yard as soon as i saw it i knew it was a keeper.Is there a difference between the crown and rollfast as towards value? I know cars not bikes i know having a 65 vette is alot more valuable then a 65 mustang lol is it the same with bikes? and do they stile make tires for it everything works perfect on the bike the tires are the origanals as well so i would like to keep it the way it is as much as possiable.

Amish people, eh? You must either be in nearby Lancaster Co, PA or NE Ohio, right? Free is good, no... free is GREAT!!! I don't know about value differences between the two Scott. They both carry the Rollfast branding, just that the Crown is a bit more subtle about it. Kinda like the Ford Probe is really a rebadged euro market Mazda.

Tires are still available... You're local bike shop should be able to help you out or you could check out K-Mart,& Wal-Mart. But here's a tip, and I know I'm gonna get beat about the head & neck for this... but I like 'em ok, Schwinn has a real nice EA3 (26" x 1 3/8")tire that goes for about $10 retail. What I like about this tire is that it has a real beefy profile to it like the originals, but it has a road bike kind of tread on it which combined with a 65 - 70 psi inflation rating gives it a comparitivly low rolling resistance. Why not consider mounting up a set to ride on, keeping your original tires for show.

Finally got the 28 spoke dynohub laced into a RSW 16" wheel, and the first thing I did was yank out the magnet/ armature assembly, and stick in a S.A. drum brake. Shoes have't even been properly bedded down, but I can leave skid marks on the sidewalk! Now what do I do with the magnet/armature assembly? Anybody interested? I've also got a Raleigh Industries Alloy kickstand, made for a 26" wheel bike, and a couple of N.O.S. double lugged front brake cables made for the old style Raleigh brakes. These are a local make, (ironically the same company now specializes in Harley-Davidson bikes). On the other hand I am looking for a decent bell, as well as an FW in any kind of shape.

This latest hub is marked 4 of 51. It's N.O.S. never ridden and I opened it up to have it cleaned out. The innards like the gear teeth are spotless but the bearings and races are gunked up with dried grease and oil.
It's sat for 52 years and was never laced into a wheel. A careful polishing of the alloy shell and after some of the parts are througherly de- gumped it'll be re- assembled back and ready to go. There are many small shop wear scratches on the outside of the alloy shell and on the trigger meadalions face. Even N.O.S. items do not slip through time without a hitch it seems. Perhaps this one was asleep outside it's original box?
The trigger goes click,click click.Sure and tight with no play. Everything looks beautiful,not one speck of rust!
I can just imagine when I'm 52 and they open me up.The surgeons will be commenting: "Lookit at all the gunk that's inside him, stopping everything up!"
Now that I have my own parts cleaner, nobody is going to lose my parts and then act ignorant when I mention that stuff is missing. Fixed that from ever happening again! This is an AC hub and these are rare and it was popular for time trials I hear. Don't see many of them but they are out there.
Slowly but surely this one bike is comming back together. I still need a GB alloy handlebar that is N.O.S. and not all scratched up. Having two sets of rear wheels and two diffrent type hubs has solved the problem of what hub to set this bike up with. I just could not decide between an Sturmey- Archer F.M. or and A.C. so I have them both. I turned the key, opened up the box and there it was! Yes! It's here! Awesome! The seller had cleverly packed it in a thick cardboard mailing tube with bubble wrap.
Do you remember ripping open gifts on Christmas morning all excited? Well every time, I get a package from a bike pally this is how I feel. In all the shops and places I have visited I never pulled an N.O.S. AC hub out of a shop cabinet or drawer.

I also have two rear wheels set up for my bike one with a FW and one with a FM hub. Where I live in Massachusetts there are a lot of hills and I like the wide ratios of the FW hub for riding on the street. When I ride the Cape Cod Rail Trails or some of the other rail trails in Massachusetts and Connecticut I use the FM hub as there are no hills just inclines. I have wingnuts on each set of wheels so switching them is fast and easy.

Yo Chris, is this the 3 speed close ratio gear? With an alloy hub? (sigh...) Seems like you always get the good stuff. If I see one more Supercycle or Free spirit with a cheap plastic lock keeper bolted/rusted on the down tube I'm gonna hurl all over the bike...

Yes it is, but she wasn't cheap! The thing is, it's missing a dust cap that is specific to this model hub and the end indicator chain nut. He has it, I'll get it if I don't forget to ask.

Hi. You guys talking about the SA 3 speed hubs can you help me please. I'm using a 1974 Schwinn Sprint ( bent seat tube ) to build upon an unusual 3 speed bike. Instead of using the 3 speed handle bar click shifter I'd like to use a down tube friction shifter to shift the 3 speed hud in back. I've heard of guys doing this previously and wanted your opinions on it. The bike would be more of a conversation piece than a daily rider, but it will be ridden on bike trails vs the street. Front crank is a 54 tooth Nevar alloy. Will the chain from the 10 speed work on the SA sprocket ? I love the sound off a 3 speed hub and wanted to add one into my collection of Schwinn lightweights. Any advice is good. Thanks, Kevin

Instead of going to a friction shifter on the downtube, here is a neat example of "indexed" Sturmey Archer d.tube shifting.

You might save yourself some grief and expense from the friction shifter self shifting at some point when you were really going at it.

The chainring will work with the S/A hub, but it "should" use a 1/8 wide chain instead of the 3/32 chain normally on derailler bikes. Be sure to check your chainline. (Front and rear sprockets lining up)

I would NOT recommend a friction shifter for SA hubs. Nor would my false teeth. Watch that neutral spot between normal and high, it's a killer.

You can use a friction shifter but it is not what Sturmey Archer intended and you'll shorten the life of the hub and you can get hurt doing this too. The shifter that they made for the hub goes Click, Click, Click.
A quick shift from one solid point to another solid point. No awkward movements. This is so you don't chip gear teeth and damage the hub. The spacing in the original SA shifter is made so the changes in gears are clean.
The "neutral spot syndrome" is best fought with proper indicator chain set up.
Thew comment about the false teeth should be a warning to you.

I was wondering if anyone is interested in buying or trading for this bike. I do not havew the money to give it a proper restoration. So I am think of passing it on to some one who will restore it.
It is carlton 4 speed fw hub bicycle the hub is date 1953. it has gb champion handlebars and gb super hood brakes levers and courier brakes. the bike is in really rough shape the paint/ chrome is no good. the brooks saddle is also thrashed. the trigger shifter is three speed not four speed. thanks
