The brakes are more like center-pull calipers only using a mechanical arm system to operate the brakes rather than a transverse cable. The brake cables are double ended with a round cylindrical end for the brake levers and a fat upside down "T" on the other end which fits into a recess in the brake. I've seen versions of this type of brake in pictures of other period BSA bicycles. Since BSA owned Sunbeam when this bike was built, it appears they used their style of brakes on Sunbeams and probably New Hudsons also. I was able to obtain a NOS BSA pattern 1949 brake cable for the front brake on EBAY a few weeks ago. I have also been able to locate a rear cable but it was for a womans frame and is way too long. As soon as I finish the cleanup/tuneup on the bike I'll post some pictures. The bike is not a museum piece but is in good shape with the original paint and decals. I plan on using it to commute to work on special days. Thanks for the interest!

Sounds like the Philco or Phillips style centrepull. Hard to find cables but a custom harley shop could make you up similar cable quite easily.

BTW, those cables were always real long and droopy. I've got a couple of them and they extend way out beyond the bars in order to fit. And my top tube is real long.

oh no the dreaded double ended brake cables, twice now in the past month I've discovered that I need double ended brake cables, first the 1940s Rudge and now my dutch bike with drum brakes and I can't find anyone who has a front drum cable for sale, here or in the UK and none of the shops in Holland or Germany I contacted are willing to ship to the US - they've got a generic drum brake cable over there that can be cut and works with varios hubs. I guess I should look into the motorcycle shop solution.

Also check into a Universal replacement emergency brake cable at an Auto supply store.I'm not sure this will work for you,but it's fairly easy for you to ask to see one at a store and decide for yourself.Making a part always depends on the skill level of the do-it-yourselfer.Good luck,and let us know what worked---sam

I ran low on questions so I haven't posted in 6 months - 1 year. But now I have a question regarding what may be a long since buried topic. After a handful of attempts of building the perfect "American Roadster" I finally succeeded last year. Meanwhile my pile of failed attempts has sat dormant for some time. Well, I decided to take an old French frame that was way too small for me (I bought it because it was only $1), and make a sleek road bike for my wife. Since this frame had no hole to mount a rear brake on I thought it would be perfect for my Shimano Nexus 4-speed hub with internal brake that was in my failure pile. The problem is that this hub has a thumb shifter, and the bike will be equipped with drop bars. I could rig something that I'd be comfortable with, but my wife is a bit more picky. So I got to wondering if there are any STI shifters or drop bar - bar end shifters that might have the same index changes as the nexus 4-speed hub. I asked the local bike shop expert who said that he had semi-success with the 7-speed, but never the 4-speed. So I was wondering if anyone here may have tried this, and if so, if they might recommend something for a successful outcome.

A gear hub with a small thumb shifter would work, SA 3 or 4 speed and 3 speed SRAM were and are still available with a thumb shifter. One of the 5 speed hubs has a thumb shifter, whatever hub Pashley uses on the delux roadster, that might work.
And there is the old SA 5 speed which apparently can be operated with thumb shifter and friction shifter.

Thumb shifters: They are great for me. However, my wife would be more comfortable with STI or bar end shifters, hence the inquiry. I have an S/A 5-speed that I considered, but it has no internal brake, plus it has DT shifters, which my wife would find equally annoying.

Perfect American Roadster: parts = S/A + factory equipped cranks/bottom bracket (- one front sprocket). Frame = Schwinn (it was cheap, and my size [68cm]). Wheels = Mavic 27 x 1 1/4, S/A hubs - sprinter 7-speed coaster brake 1995 & front drum brake of roughly the same vintage - steel spokes, cross-3. Handlebars = unknown; these were a lucky find. The schwinn over size frames ,I'm told, were made with cro-mo tubing not their regular water pipe stuff used on low end bikes--nice bike--not too sure I'd go for the bars,but then that's why they made countless styles of bars,so everone could be pleased!---thinks for sharing the photo--sam

I'm trying to get my Hercules club bike into ridable condition and have run into a problem. It has a BW flip flop hub and on the fixed side the "cup" - the part of the hub the bearings contact - can be rotated, it didn't think much of it until now. In the course of tracking down a scraping noise - fender stay bolt - I reopned the hub took the bearings out and inspected for damage, moving it in the process, now I can't get as good of an adjustment, it's stiffer than before and there is now play at the rims. The hub and cones are in really good shape. Any ideas? I'm about to go re-open the hub and move it around again, hopefully I will get a better adjustment this time.

These 3 piece hubs are pressed fit. I think your hub is now trashed. You could unlace it and try to get it brazed or epoxied but that's not good enough for a rider and would be risky to ride. I suspect the bearings would constantly work themselves loose when the chain pulls the flange forward.

BW made lots of flip-flop hubs and aren't too hard to find. A BH (Airlite, Solite or Racelite) hub is a proper period correct substitute. Phillips as well. I've got a 36 hole BW flip flop in my stash but I need it for a project. Keep your eyes open on ebay...how many holes do you need?

Anybody know what a 1960s rack and pannier set would look like? I'm thinking about doing some retro touring on the Tourist and need info on construction and appearance.

I presume the rack would be a steel rod arrangement with multiple stays or a down-and-up loop to keep the bags out of the spokes. Bags would be canvas with leather straps, and were before the days of rigid backs, so you had to be careful when packing them.

Hints would be great, pix even better. TIA.

A while back, someone in NY bought on ebay.co.uk and resold here, a 1930s Raleigh Clubman, older "roadster touring" variety with chaincase, some type of shallow drop bars, drum brakes and it had a rack and varios bags/boxes,leather straps. There might be a pic in the archives here, if not I saved all of the pics and could send you some,though it might not be of any use if you can't get anything that looks similar. I've seen some appropriate looking pannier bags, but as usual, you'd have to go to Holland to get those. Those Giles Bertroud bags are absurdly expensive and green and the carradice ones look too modern.

I tryed to find a pic but no luck.The lightweight racks used on Claud Butler bikes were very simple in appearance.Look like they were SS welding rod.top was an ovel with stright sided,one stay in the middle running down to the eyelits on the bike.two stays ,one in rear other in front (on the sides)meet the center one about 3/4 way down.At this intersection a small ring was welded to all three stays.This ring held the stays and also made a good attachment ring for the bags.Very simple and light rack---sam

For sixties state of the art touring you would need to see a back catalogue of Karrimor Ltd. I don't know their address or web site but a search might help you. Nowadays Karrimor are British market leaders in outdoor leisure equipment, ruksacks etc but they also do cycle luggage. Most sixties touring racks would have been constructed from quarter inch steel rod, very few from aluminium.If you were going for more man on the street type equipment then you could use any British ex- Ministry of Defence webbing small packs. The vaying sizes of military webbing bags were still available NOS well into the seventies and they were put to multiple uses, not the least being cycle panniers etc. (nowadays they are a student grunge fashion accessory)These bags do turn up at ex-MOD suppliers and at specialist 1940's events, I recently saw some 1944 desert camoflague back packs that had spent 60 years in storage.
Karrimor for smart, ex-MOD for every day practical. Remember to keep your luggage low and avoid wearing a back pack on your back.

I've been away for a while, but I'm back. I'm trying to review the story on Westrick rims: when did they replace 26 x 1 3/8" Westwoods? Has anyone had good success with these? They seem a good compromise and handy if you need to swap wheels between your Sports and 26" rod braker.

Not sure if Raleigh ever "replaced" their 26 X 1-3/8" Westwoods on any model that I know of (me thinks especially of the Dawn Tourist).

I do know for a fact that the 28 X 1-1/2" Westwoods on the Tourist were discontinued in 1983, to be substituted for Westricks.

By the way - speaking of all these Raleigh rim types - you wouldn't happen to have a 26 X 1-3/8" 40 hole Endrick sitting around that you may sell, would you?

Lady had a metallic blue Norman sports style, AW hub dated 53, ladies frame. It's in "fair-restorable" condition: it is rideable and all the parts are there, but it needs a lot of work. I rescued this one from certain dumpstering. I don't have time for the project, so the bike is cheap to a good home - read on.

Condition details: Rideable, gears work. Frame and fork are straight. Paint area is about 30% surface rust. Chrome wouldn't look bad with a good polishing. The seat is mattress style but it needs to be recovered (or replaced with Brooks of your choice). The crank pins weren't put in facing opposite so the crank is crooked. I think the tires have been replaced (don't remember but I think they are Goodyears) - they both hold air. EA-3 wheels. Brakes use single-ended cables, rear cable is frozen. Quite dirty.

The bike is a better quality machine for its age; the brakes are sturdy and the front hub looks like it's machined rather than assembled from pieces. The components are Phillips or equivalent quality - consistent from the earlier post that says they were mfg. by Phillips. (I've had a couple of cheapo english three speeds of the era and this is definitely better.)

The deal is this. She asks that someone make a donation to the Alzheimer's Society for the bike. So let's call it $15 (or whatever your heart says) plus shipping. If you live near Rochester NY I'll deliver, longer distances you can pick up or we can meet halfway.

For the CCM experts: I came upon an old CCM-50's or 60's, large mens frame (top tube slightly angled), original fenders , 28in wheels (brass nipples),original coasterbrake (CCM brake), Mertens saddle, original color red with white fenders.
A remarkibly nimble yet comfortible ride.
The question: the coasterbrake has a serial # of A58431. Any idea of the year?

It's likely much older than the 50's. Look for a frame serial number...they're often around the seatube cluster...sometimes on the chainstay or dropouts. I've got a date code for frames that goes back to 1921...

I recently purchased this as a ten speed, and am trying to figure out what year it is. Someone at bikeforums suggested this might be a converted 3-speed. I'm not sure how much of this is original, but here's what it had on it (excluding the 10-speed stuff).

Really vivid Kelly Green frame with black accents and gold lettering (a lot of it is worn off, but the model name "Racer" clearly remains.

Weinmann center pulls.

Wrights saddle.

Sturmey Archer steel chromed rims.

Truly horrible steel 40 spoke hubs front/rear (front still functions, rear is awaiting induction in the "messed up cup hall of fame"). The freewheel on the rear leads me to believe this truly was a ten-speed, but who knows - someone might have replaced originals.

If anyone knows where I could find 40 spoke hubs that wouldn't look too ridiculous on a 25+ year old bike, I'm willing to attempt rebuilding the wheel. It would be a shame not to use those rims.

I think there were a few models of Dunelt 10 speeds...could be original...BUT...there is an abundance of 40 hole Sturmey hubs out there...cheap! I'd go that way

I haven't heard of a 6V, .8 amp bulb. Most 6V dynos I've seen run at .5 amps. If .5 works, the you may want to try here: http://www.reflectalite.com/vacuumpage.html

I'm in the process reassembling my mystery dutch bike and I noticed the front brake cable is in bad shape and it's another double ended cable, first the 46 Rudge and now this. Has anyone ever replaced one of these cable? The lever end is a barrel and the brake end has a ball, it looks soldered to me, or is there a crimp on that works here?
