I'm going to look at an advertised 1930's vintage Roadmaster. The owner says it is in excellent shape. Good paint, always indoors. Any suggestions as to the value of this bike?

Thanks
GB

Price depends on features: Springer, tank, lights, skip-tooth, rack, etc. I'd stay away from restored or re-painted bikes.

WANTED:   Raleigh Tourister posted by: Leonard Houston on 5/13/2000 at 7:06:47 PM
I am on the lookout for an old Raleigh Tourister "Bobby" bike. I already have a wonderful ol' Robin Hood which still runs great, but I saw a picture of the Tourister and fell in love - mainly because it looks a bit bigger than what I have already. At any rate, I look forward to hearing from someone out there soon. Many thanks for all your help. Cheers! L.H.

RE:WANTED:   Raleigh Tourister posted by http://www.ChristopherRobin@starmail.com on 5/15/2000 at 4:06:45 PM
I started collecting Raleigh Tourist bicycles in 1977. There was no internet then and so I had to chase it.I checked out the local bike shops, garage sales, and estate sales. I bumped into someone who introduced me to this one guy and he introduced me to 25 other folks. Old shop owners, bicycle jobbers, sales reps, past company employees. I have met really wondefull people in my pursuits. If you are loking for a 28 inch wheel, rod brake bicycle then the Raleigh Tourist D.L.1. is what you are talking about . When you say "Bobby bicycle" this it it. Today, there is an ever growing group of people who are getting back to one or are discovering it for the first time. Now we have this internet thing, and it is so easy to find what you are looking for! I recomend that you check out E-bay auction where these pop up quite often. Check under Raleigh bicycle or under heading Raleigh.
Then there are these pages here on OldRoads.com (only under the roadsters section) Also, for parts and information there is Sheldon Brown,at http://www.Sheldonbrown.com Sheldon has put together a huge web site called "Harris Cyclery" You see, Harris Cyclery is also a bike shop and I recomend you buy bicycle tires from him if you need them. The 28 inch tires are a difficult thing to find but Sheldon sells them! His bicycle web site is crammed with information. He has some pages of information about the "Raleigh Bobby bike" and the parts, equipment and about other bikes e.t.c. Sheldon is a "must see" web page. Reffered to as "Captain Bike" it is appropriate in this case! (Actually, he is one of the admirals) If you want to ask a question then you are at the right place only go to the English Roadsters section here. The phantom Diagrams showing this particular bicycle are here under Raleigh/Rudge/Humber exploded diagrams. Take your time exploring all the many sites on the internet regarding this. There is a lot more to see about this I only mentioned a little bit. I would hold out for a nice example on E-bay of this bike.

RE:WANTED:   wheels and tires posted by ART on 5/15/2000 at 8:53:24 AM
I got into re-building older bikes with 28" wheels and one of the things I learned was that not all 28"tires, clincher or sew up, are compatible with 28" wheels, metal, metal clad wooden, or wooden. My suggestion is to try to buy the tire with the rim. I'm pretty much out of this now, but I had a set of tires that never fit on any rims that I had. You can find new tires, mostly made in the Netherlands, out there. Sometimes bikestores have 28" tires mixed in with the 700s...sometimes 700s have fit my 28" rims. Once I found a set of tires that were solid rubber. They had treads on them, you could have ridden across a lava flow in them and they wouldn't have flatted, but they were so heavy.

You say "sometimes 700c tires fit your 28 inch rims" What EXACTLY do you mean? I have yet to see a 700 tire fit the Raleigh Tourist D.L.1. Bobby bike yet> As far as the Netherlands tires, These are supreme in quality but I never did figure out how to be able to buy these! They make all- white or cream coloured tires but once again these are not imported into the U.S.A. You are exactly right about the 28 inch tires. I went to canada and I found that there is a Canadian size tire 28X 1 1/2 that is identical but it will not fit. Also there is a 28 X 1/4 tire and I have a set but I have never seen a bike with these rims!

I have an old German Brandenburg roadster that has 28 X 1 3/4-inch (middleweight) tires. I've never seen another. Have you?

RE:WANTED:   wheels and tires posted by ART on 5/16/2000 at 6:26:59 PM
Christopher Robin...I have a set of tires made in Holland, Vredestein, San Marino that fit a set of Weinmann 700c rims. I also had the same tires on an old Iver Johnson, that I believe had it's original rims...which would have been 28's. That's my recollection, but I can't remember stuff from this morning so I could be wrong about the compatability of some 700's with 28 in wheels.
