FOR SALE:   TEXAS RANGER posted by: MP on 8/12/2000 at 6:16:50 AM
I found an old bike called a "Texas Ranger". I'd like to get some information on it because I've never heard of one. It's a green cruiser style 26" boys bike from (I think) the 50's with an unusual green checkerboard seat. Are these very collectible?

RE:FOR SALE:   TEXAS RANGER posted by Jim on 8/13/2000 at 6:49:19 PM
Wow! Is it intact and rideable? They can pretty desireable to those of us who live down here in the Lone Star State.

Uhhh... Care to part with it? ;)

We usually see them in pieces. I know someone who has a few parts for these bikes, but have never seen one intact.

I have no idea of value.

I found an old bicycle in my grandmother's garage. I know it's a Hercules, but I have no idea how to find out it's age and if it is of any value. It's not in great shape, but I would like to know if I should keep it, sell it, or junk it. Could someone tell me how to find out what the age and any other pertinent info I might need. Thanks. I can be reached at taknm@aol.com

Check the archives under "English Roadsters." A Hercules is a British bike, and most are a lower-end version of the Raleigh Sports.

if it's stock, you can clean off the rear hub and look for a date stamped there.

if it's a girls bike and you are a girl it can be converted into a city cruiser.if it has sentimental value or is just real dirty it can be reworked into a spiffy little roadster.i prefer a man's frame even for a girl, they're stronger. check the frame to make sure it is the right size
and that it's straight, also the fork.these are sturdy bikes and manage to outlast alot of the other cheap junk.if the paint
is good clean it up real good before proceeding. if it has
imperfections and you dont want to repaint it,coat it with some clear spray enamel. try some 'o' or 'oo' steel wool on the chrome break calipers, you'd be surprised at how bad they can look and still come out shiny(i prefer a fine wire
wheel on a grinder machine,it's faster).respoke the hubs(making sure the innards and bearing surfaces are ok)onto some aluminum rims(check the brake reach and or upgrade the brakes to fit the new rims).
find new bars and a riser stem to fit your needs. then get some mtn style levers and functional grips. trim it out with a new style seat and maybe new fenders, new brake pads, new tires, etc.

I have a Raleigh 5-speed that I bought in 1970 with an Allvit derailleur. The shift lever broke off and my local bike says that Huret (and 5 speeds) are long gone. Any idea of where I can go to replace it?

RE:WANTED:   1970's girls schwin posted by Jim on 8/13/2000 at 7:02:27 PM
Hi Karen,

The thrift store is an excellent idea to try. If you get in a bind and can't seem to locate one. I have a couple of bikes that I can let you have for far less than that!

One is a red 26" 1973 Ladies Schwinn Hollywood. The other is a late 70's 20" Girls Schwinn Stingray Fairlady. Both are in good riding condition.

Good luck!
