What type of bicycle, year and model, does Pee-Wee Herman ride in Pee-Wee's Big Adventures?

RE:MISC:   question posted by Kevin C. on 9/9/2000 at 2:25:28 AM
This question has come up before. Someone who was involved in the production said that several different bikes were used, each one a bit different. He had all the details, which I don't remember now.

He called it the X-1. That's what my wife calls my mountain bike.

RE:MISC:   question posted by Pee-Wee on 9/9/2000 at 2:57:32 PM
Hey, that's an easy one! Pee-Wee Herman's bike is a postwar 1948-1951 Schwinn DX (not an X-1). The bicycle was originally made to take a torpedo light, but in the movie, a Delta Rocket Ray is used. The frame of the DX is'nt a cantilever (liek the Black Phantom), but rather it is a double bar frame. The sprocket is the same kind used on the Phantoms. The only thing is on Pee-Wee's particular DX, the tank was painted completely white, as opposed to white AND red. Hope this helps

FOR SALE:   Value of Bike posted by: Jane on 9/8/2000 at 7:50:09 PM
I have (I think) a 1958 Women's Columbia Thunderbird. It's in awful shape. Left out in the rain. What is the value of it as is - rust and all. I think it's a '58 if I looked up the serial # right.

Need info on 2 bikes i have. 1 says raliegh sports, sturmey/archer 3spd has the number 51 on it. im guessing 1951. numbers 10858gb on seat post frame. the 2nd one is blac says huffy on the front. has a decal on the frame that says genuine english light weight. also says made in england on it. it also has a sturney/archer 3spd.cant find a serial number. any help would be appreciated.

RE:MISC:   need info posted by Mike (the bike dork) on 9/9/2000 at 9:40:56 AM
Sturmey Archer hubs have the dates stamped on them. '51 is correct for 1951. The Huffy's hub should also have a date if the hub is Sturmey Archer.

RE:RE:MISC:   need info posted by bob hipple on 9/9/2000 at 10:59:16 AM
The shift mechanism on the huffy says sturmey/archer..but the hub has a 333,threespeed hub,usa pat 3021726. Does this help? Also they are in fair shape, i just want to make them rideable. Where can i get info on what is actually supposed to be stock on these bikes and any history on both bikes..thanks

Could someone please provide some basic information about a bicycle a friend has and which he might sell to me? It is an Excelsior bicycle with wooden wheels. It appears to be in nice shape, but hangs high up in a barn and I have never actually touched it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

RE:MISC:   age/Value posted by bob on 9/8/2000 at 7:18:58 AM
Excelsior was bought by Schwinn at some point. Some Schwinn built bikes have Excelsior badges with AS & co in smaller letters. It could also be an Excelsior product. Either way it is certainly worth picking up.

Unless you can find one or picture like it it will be hard to put a date on it but I would say in the early 1900"s, The Excelsior was a result of the motorcyle schwinn built their first love. Mr Arnold kept the bicycles going. I have several of the Excelsiors but nothing back that far. Altho they are outthere its still a prize for a collector to find a nice one. Value would be hard to say because they aren't enough of them to set a value but if you can afford it BUY.

I have found that many of the old, 28-inch single-tube bicycles don't have great value. Many are quite plain and new replacement tires for them can run as much as $150 each.

FOR SALE:   looking for information on a bike called Hercules posted by: Joan on 9/7/2000 at 11:48:47 AM
I was given this cute older bike that I am trying to get more information on. It is a woman's bike. The chain guard says Hercules and on the front of the bike is a decal that has a big H and then below it says Nottingham England. It is mostly blue with a blue and white seat and the rear fender has some white with a rear reflector. No speeds just back pedal brakes.
It's in really good condition, has a big white wire basket and a metal thing on the back fender to hold items that says spitfire. Any leads would be appreciated.
