WANTED:   Information on Flying Mercury/Chicago posted by: Tim Crowder on 5/24/2001 at 8:05:47 PM
I am seeking information about a bicycle called a Flying Mercury. The bike frame has a double top bar with leather seat and wooden hand grips. The wheels are 28" wood with steel or iron outer bands. The badge (very large) depicts an automobile from the teens in front-on view. The auto has large wings coming out from each side and has a driver and passenger in the driving compartment. Across the auto's radiator is the word Chicago.
I am trying to locate any information on this bike such as year built, manufacturer, etc. Please Email if you can help.

Hi Roadster fans.
As the importer of Indian Roadster bikes I had a great time, lost some money and now want to clear out my small inventory of bike parts. All are new and include spokes, tires, tubes, hubs, rims, for 26 &28 inch wheels, fenders, chain guards, bottom brackets, 24 dynamo light sets, seats, handlebars, brake sets, brake pads, brake rods, black wire mesh baskets, and assembly instruction manuals.

kind regards, Stephen

It does not resemble the yo scooters of the 80s at all. I dont know if the tires are deflatable or not. It is in very good condition. I dont know what I am going to do with it yet but I would like to know the value of it. I would Appreciate any help anyone could give me.

MISC:   shwinn speedster 3 spd mens posted by: ron on 5/23/2001 at 5:37:25 AM
wondering how much bike is worth. bike has new tires, rims and chrome in good condition, paint original and in good condition. 3 spd through the hub, this bike has arched bar across from seat to neck, with curled handlebars.

RE:MISC:   shwinn speedster 3 spd mens posted by jeff on 5/23/2001 at 8:35:39 AM
That's a strange combo, a three speed with racing handlebars.

There were 3 kinds of Speedsters over the years:

The earliest were middleweights (semi-fat tires) and had cantilever frames.

Then there were the standard diamond frame Speedsters, which look a lot like an Engish three-speed.

Then for about a year they made them with the frame you've described (with the curved top tube, kind of like a Fastback on steroids).

As for value, it's probably the 2nd most valuable of the Speedsters I've mentioned. Probably about $120 in good original condition. But I don't think it has the original handlebars, and that could hurt it's value.

HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IN THIS HOBBY OF BIKES, NO-ONE IS INTRESTED IN A 69 SCHWINN "FASTBACK" FRAME AND FORKS,,,

RE:RE:FOR SALE:   1969 posted by anotherbikeguy on 5/26/2001 at 10:46:47 AM
No offense, but check out eBay completed auctions for a fastback frame. Fastbacks just aren't as popular as stingrays. A complete nice Fastback is worth bucks, but building one up from a frame is an expensive proposition. And the Stingray guys (for the most part) prefer original paint. Just trying to help, not trying to start anything.......

I APPRECIATE THE INFO, I WASNT AWARE THAT THE FASTBACKS WERENT AS POPULAR, I TOOK APART WHAT I HAD TOGETHER ON IT, AND JUST PUT IT AWAY, MAYBE SOMEDAY SOMEONE WILL WANT OR NEED ONE,THANKS,,,,,
