FOR SALE:   Spitfire posted by: David on 7/19/2004 at 7:24:05 PM
I have a Schwinn Spitfire in very good condition. It is a 26-inch ladies bicycle that I am told was made in 1939. There is no mention of Schwinn on the frame, nameplate, chrome chainguard, fenders or anywhere. The logo on the nameplate is a spitfire propeller and engine cylinders as seen from the front along with the Spitfire name.

It has a serial number of G19433 under the bottom bracket, where it belongs, though there appears to be little reference information regarding serial numbers from the earlier years. It appears to have original Allstate tires and painted rims. Interestingly, the tires have little or no age cracks, or other signs of age, other than normal wear on the tread. There is some wear on the Mesinger seat, though no rips or cracks. The chrome is good, as is the paint and everything else, except for some surface rust and there is a bent edge at the back of the front fender. The best offer of $150 or more, plus the cost of shipping, takes it. It really is a nice bike in very good condition, but it isn't really my style. I like 70's - 80's steel-frame 10-speed road bikes. Email me at lawprofdave@surfglobal.net and I will happily send along some photos.

FOR SALE:   1939 Schwinn Spitfire posted by: Dave on 7/15/2004 at 12:13:55 PM
As far as I can tell, the bicycle I have is a Schwinn Spitfire and it appears to be in very good condition. It is a 26-inch ladies bicycle, probably 1939.

One thing that I'm sure is not original is the handlebar stem. I have removed it to check and can leave it off, if desired, for shipping. The grips are in very good shape and completely intact despite this removal. I am seeking $250 or the best offer, plus the cost of shipping. It really is a nice bike in very good condition, but it isn't really my style. I like steel 10-speed road bikes. Email me at lawprofdave@surfglobal.net and I will happily send along some photos. This old bike wants to be ridden again
