AGE / VALUE:   Huffy 3-Speed posted by: Eric on 12/2/2005 at 10:20:05 PM
I am considering the purchase of a nifty Huffy 3-speed, "English" style. Bike looks 10 to 25 years old, has "Sahara" letters on creme colored frame (original paint and decals), tuned up with good rubber, $80. I do not have high expectations of this thing ever having a huge collector value but would be interested in anyone giving me any info. Is there any kind of cult for American built Huffy bikes? It seems like there is a society of people who like English style lightweight 3 speeds... I guess my real question is, independent of actual $ worth, is this a bike with any panache?

They made thousands of these bikes, they were low end department store bikes with little to no collectable value. The only parts I have ever salvaged off of these were the Shimano rear hub, and sometimes a Messinger saddle. I've scrapped near mint bikes. I guess a good comparison would be to say it's like the Yugo of bicycles.

Take your $80 and find a better quality bike like a Raleigh, Schwinn, or any similar shop grade bike. You could check ebay to get an idea of what a bike is worth or what sort of demand there is for it.

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   downtube cable stop for barcons posted by: John E on 12/2/2005 at 7:27:13 PM
I need a dual cable stop which clamps onto the downtube where the shift levers would otherwise be. These are typically used with barcons (my application) and stem shifters and used to be very common, but I am having trouble finding one. Brand and cosmetic condition are unimportant.

I'm sure I have quite a few of these old cable stops - as well as a lot of folks on this group. It seems most of the bikes I have originally came with stem-mounted shifters - I have converted many of them - so I know I have the old cable stops stuck back in a box somewhere.

Rivendell sells cable stops specifically for use with barcons. I think they may cost $10 or $15 depending on if your a member or not. Or you could join Rivendell (I think it was $25 for 3 years) and get the cablestops for free - they give you $10 off your first purchase when you join. Or even better, email me your address and I'll mail you one - your choice shimano or Suntour.

I have at least one clamp (SunTour) that came on a bike I had used years ago for touring (Centurion). The bike was a bit smallish for me, but I kept all the components for later application, but since DT shifters are my preference, the clamp is available if interested. No charge, of course, to you. I've been rearranging things a bit, so I have to look for them, but looks like Bryant has you set up pretty decent. Consider mine a back-up offer. Good luck.

Can anyone direct me to info or pics on the French built Andre Bertin road frames. I am rebuilding my old road bike from 1964 and need a source for decal design.
Thanks
