AGE / VALUE:   650C wheels - Need advice posted by: Gralyn on 1/20/2008 at 8:29:27 PM
I currently have bike frame that will only accomodate 650C wheels. I'm having a hard time finding a set of 650C's that I can afford. A local bike shop told me they could get some from Trek for around $200 (Trek has some WSD bikes and smaller frame sizes they put 650C wheels on). I've seen some on Ebay.....for up around that same price range and on up to over a grand.
I was thinking of different options: Maybe I could build up a wheel set? I would have to get a couple 36 hole rims, though......then figure out the size spokes I would need. Another option...maybe.....some of the mountain bike wheels - 26 inch - that have pretty narrow rims. Would a 650C tire fit a 26 inch rim?
Any ideas? Advice? Or should I just save up my money?

A 650C is the same bead seat diameter as a Schwinn S7 middleweight 26x1 3/4" wheel. If you can't find the 650C wheels, maybe try a test fit with a 26" MTB wheel and run a narrow tire? It may take getting creative with the brake calipers though, but I am sure there's a combo that will work.
I've also seen a few 650 frame that were built with some added clearance and I was able to run a very small tire on a 700c rim, but most were built pretty tight to save on weight. The 26 MTB wheel will be a 559mm bead seat, so you will have to deal with the rim edge being about 6mm (1/4" or so) farther away from the caliper. Overall wheel diameter may be about the same with say a 26x1.5" slick tire.
I would personally just get the right wheels, but if you have something handy that will work till you can get the right wheels, go for it.

hey Gralyn- Joe's got the right dimensions. They're all posted on Sheldon's tire sizing page: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html
I think there are arguments both ways as far as what size you choose. Clearly the mtb rim size would fit, and you have the most tire options that way. As Joe says, you'd need an extra 6mm of reach on your calipers. But what I want to say is, if you build your own wheels you'll be glad you did.

I have a 26-inch mountain bike wheel set - with a pretty narrow rim. If I could find road-type tires to fit them - I could try that.
I'm still toying with the idea of building a wheel set.

I bet you could sell it on Ebay.
I have a 1983 Schwinn Super Sport - very lightweight for its age (around 22 lbs). It's a great bike. I don't think you would have trouble selling it at all.

I am seeking help to identify a track frame. This frame has Bocama (BCM) lugs, english threaded bottom bracket, reynolds 531 tubing, campy dropouts, and markings under the bottom of "2376" & "F". The same "2376" serial number is marked on the steering tube, and has a double layered fork crown..

Thanks much..
