I have a bike that I would like to know more about. It is an orange Huffy 5 speed "Heat Lightning". Can anyone tell me how to tell what year it is and does anyone know anything about it? I have a picture @ http://pages.sssnet.com/qwiktim/huffyhl-1.JPG

Thanks,

Can you post the serial number, or at least the first few letters/numbers? My guess is that the bike is from the early 1970's, and if the serial number starts with a single digit number followed by a letter, then that single digit is the year. Example: If the serial number starts with 3H, then the bike is likely from 1973.

The numbers on the front of the frame are HC8014647 and the numbers on the rear by the rear axle are C70454 and 2036T. Does this help?

I'm looking for a correct replacement seat for my '67 coppertone fenderless Sting-ray. However I'm not sure what color(s)/style are right. Anybody out there to assist ?

White 'tufted' saddle.

RE:RE:MISC:   Correct seat posted by HIGH boy on 11/27/2000 at 10:16:52 PM
WRONG! it's supposed to have a ribbed silver glitter seat, NOT tufted, NO inlays.

RE:RE:RE:MISC:   Correct seat posted by Robert on 11/28/2000 at 11:04:59 PM
Yesterday I spoke to Pete at Hyperrays and he said that the seat should be a white/silver sparkle smoothie ? Hummmmmm... Is there any referrence book available that breaks down the componentry by model/year that I can pickup for future use ?

RE:RE:RE:RE:MISC:   Correct seat posted by Carl on 11/30/2000 at 5:25:13 AM
Get the book sold on this site called "Collectible Sting-Ray Bicycles, 1963 1/2 - 1979". It has all the specs for all models right down to the last nut and bolt.

If LowBoy had this book, he wouldn't be dishing bad information!

RE:MISC:   Correct seat posted by jeff on 12/1/2000 at 2:20:23 PM
From what I've seen, the early 67' standards used a silver glitter smoothie and the later 67's used a silver sparkle with ribs (no inlays) I have an early 67' deluxe with a narrow flat-sided saddle with ribs (Not tufted) and a late 67' fenderless with a wider ribbed sparkle saddle.

AGE / VALUE:   schwinn wheel ID? posted by: Brandon on 11/19/2000 at 11:31:40 AM
I have a rear rim, with a bendix hub, and it came with a slick that reads "Schwinn sting-ray slik 20 x 1 3/4 to fit a schwinn S7 tubular rim" What kind/year bike did this come off? What is the difference between an s2 and an s7 rim? Thanks.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   schwinn wheel ID? posted by Carl on 11/20/2000 at 6:51:11 AM
The S-2 rim is wider than the S-7. I'd guess the 20" S-7 could come from the mid 1950s to the late 1970s.

There are rim cut-away diagrams on this site.

WANTED:   early 70's bicycle posted by: Brian on 11/18/2000 at 9:46:50 AM
I had this bicycle around 1972. From what I remember it was orange. It was a 5 speed and had a stick shift mounted on the bar in front of the bananna seat. It had the high rise handlebars. The back tire was a flat design and had raised white letters that read Cheater Slick on the side. I had added a sissy bar with the padded head rest on it. I don't remember what company made this bicycle but I want to buy one and restore it. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. My mother still has several pictures of me on it so I will know it when I see it. Thanks

RE:WANTED:   early 70's bicycle posted by Scott on 11/18/2000 at 7:44:49 PM
Brian--go on ebay and type in "krate". Pull up anything that states Orange Krate. Yeah--you found your bike. But, sadly, be prepared to spend anywhere from 850.00 to 2500.00 to get the bike that "Santa" or your parents spent 89.95 on.
Good Luck--(and remember to research it a lot before you make a purchase or you will get taken.) Feel free to email me w/any questions you have about this bike if indeed the "Krate" series was your bike.

that doesnt sound like a orange krate to me,if it said cheater slik on the rear tire unless it was replaced.

RE:WANTED:   early 70's bicycle posted by degallina on 11/19/2000 at 6:22:19 AM
I believe you are looking for a Huffy, not a Schwinn. Huffy made Cheater Slik bikes at the same time Schwinn made Stingrays. I have seen a few recently on eBay. Try searching completed auctions. I think you will be able to find one in very good condition for no more than $300.

RE:RE:WANTED:   early 70's bicycle posted by Scott on 11/21/2000 at 8:56:05 PM
You guys are probably correct--as kids, we called all slicks on cars and bikes "cheater-slicks". Just a generic term , the same thing as here in the south, all soft drinks are called "coke", no matter what brand. Sorry if I mis-led you friend....my mistake.

AGE / VALUE:   sears screamer 2 mag questions posted by: Brandon Flannery on 11/17/2000 at 10:34:10 PM
Hello,
I have a Sears Screamer 2 coaster brake mag wheel. Does anyone know how many of these bikes were produced or have an idea HOW rare these are? I am hunting a set of butterfly bars or a set of ram's horn bars for a project. Does anyone know how to tell which schwinn a rear rim (coaster) came off? It had a slick. Any help would be great. Thanks.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   sears screamer 2 mag questions posted by Scott on 11/17/2000 at 11:18:24 PM
Sears had a coaster brake model of this bike and it did have a Slick on the rear--2 x 2.125 I believe. My Father retired from Sears, so all I ever had were Sears bikes. I had the coaster screamer, then the 5-speed, and then a Free Spirit 10 speed. I also had a few Schwinns, like a 1968 Lemon Peeler (which I still have) and a Cont' 10 Speed, which I still have. I really wish I had kept the screamers. Look in the archives of this sight--it has good photos of the old sears bikes.

I have what your looking for I have two sets of ram horn handle bars one pair is good and one pair is fair tell me what you would pay for a set.

AGE / VALUE:   Verify Schwinn year and model posted by: Tim P. on 11/17/2000 at 9:40:49 PM
According to the serial numbers, I've a '67 Stingray. Copper in color, two-speed blue-band [triple blue], front caliper brake, rough and rusty. Serial numbers are; KC52570. No fenders, missing both reflectors. Original? Thanks, Tim.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Verify Schwinn year and model posted by Kevin C. on 11/18/2000 at 3:21:37 AM
It was made in October 1967. It's probably a standard Sting-Ray with the two-speed hub option, which cost about $10 more. If the chainguard says "Deluxe" it's missing the fenders.

Have a 1978 Sting-Ray junior single speed in flamboyant red, do you know anything about the junior and if it might be collectable yet. Adam
