WANTED:   Wanted: info on "Stingray Knock-Off" muscle bikes posted by: S.T.V. on 12/28/2000 at 5:48:57 PM
I just purchased a Huffy Cheater Slick. Being a fan of "Stingray Knock-Offs" I am finding it is real tough finding any info on these bikes.
The only ads I see for sale are for the more popular bikes like the Screamer, Rail, and Chopper. If I can find more info and ads, I will put up a website dedicated to them.
If you have any ads, info, pics, anything, please help me. I will give full photo and text credits to anyone's contribution.

Thanks alot and Have a happy and safe New Year.

Here is some big, bad pics for now. I will take better ones this weekend. I love this bike even though it isnt that clean now, it will be easy to match the paint and get stuff rechromed ( for me at least )
The only trouble is gonna be the chainguard decal. I might trace it and get one laser cut outta vinyl for the time being.

Later folks, happy new year.

Hey, I haven't heard "Cheater Slick" in probably close to 30 years. A bright yellow one was my "first" bike (after training wheels). Pretty cool as I recall but I seem to remember eventually dumping the banana seat and ape-hangers for more of a BMX look. Long gone now anyways. I'll have to look thru albums and see if I can find a pic. If any of you post some pics I'd love the URL, just typing this brings back memories.

Got a question on string rays prices. How much do the single speed girls model go for?I ask this because I know little about these bikes and I picked one up for $5.00.Also on ebay I see one "buy now $30"(#1106363673)So is that about tops for the single speeds?---sam

RE:AGE / VALUE:   rays posted by ffej on 12/27/2000 at 12:35:44 PM
boy's bikes are more valuable than girl's bikes.
but a girl's bike may have many desirable parts on it.
at 5 bucks, you got a deal.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   rays posted by christian on 12/27/2000 at 7:07:16 PM
yes that is true. everyone wants boy's bikes. but if you bought it hoping to make a few bucks, i would be interested depending on the color, condition, etc. i am trying to build
up a few girl's bikes to go with my boy's rays. if you are thinking of getting rid of it, e-mail me. thanx, christian

AGE / VALUE:   Krate or Sting ray ?? posted by: Fred on 12/25/2000 at 9:35:58 AM
I have a Schwinn bike original color was lime green i repainted it black not knowing the value of the bike till i took it to the bike shop to have the derailer adjusted. It has a drum brake on the front 16" wheel, springer front end 20" slik on the rear, spring loaded bannana seat. Other than the front tire and the paint, it's all original can i get some help to id this bike and restoration hints????

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Krate or Sting ray ?? posted by Mike on 12/25/2000 at 2:25:30 PM
Are you sure the old color is lime? Schwinn stopped making lime stingrays, I believe, in 1965 and started making Krates in 1968, Maybe its a green peapicker krate. Pete at hyper-formance should be able to help you with all your questions... his address is hyper-formance.com

What do you guys think about the new Schwinn reissues of the Sting-Ray? I'm a 60's kid, so the Krate just doesn't do it for me. I was thinking of getting a blue Sting-Ray and I know you have probably addressed this question before, but I can't find anything in the archive and would really dig some input/support. I was in a bike store to buy my 5 year old a new bike when I saw the Sting-Ray and went nuts! (by the way, I'm 47)!

RE:MISC:   Are the new Sting-Rays cool? posted by Joel on 12/26/2000 at 6:29:11 AM
Yep, the reissues are just not the same. Kinda cheap looking and no cool features... If you want one, get a real one and you can cruise the neighborhood in style with the 5 year old.
And you have lots of options. There are Fastbacks, Sting Rays, Manta Rays, and Krates with 1, 2, 3, or 5 speeds. I'll bet there are lots of pictures in the archives here and on Ebay.

Thanks, Joel,I know what you're saying is true-even the chrome plating looks cheaper than I remember.I just figured that for $250 bucks(my buddy owns a bike store), I could call Hyper-Formance and get a better seat, the right handlebars etc.and have a cool 'Ray for a fraction of the price of an original.I'm a guitar collector as opposed to a bike collector/restorer and figured that for whatever shortcomings the new ones have, that it would still turn heads and be a fun ride. When did they start making them again anyway?
Thanks for writing back,
Elliot

Yea, some people have fitted repro seats and sissy bars to the new ones and even Nexus hubs. But for the same money you can find a real one.

RE:RE:Are the new Sting-Rays cool? posted by ffej on 12/27/2000 at 12:40:50 PM
the good thing about them is they have cantilever frames. when you go to a bike shop today, not one freakin' bike has a curved tube on it. that is what makes all this old stuff special, and it helps the repop stuff, too.

Thanks, you guys... all of your comments were really helpful and I want you all to knoww that it's appreciated. I had no idea of the scale that this "Sting-Ray Cult" has grown to, but you can be sure that you have helped add another new member! Happy New Year to all of you,

Sounds like a Ramshorn Fastback. Made 67-68.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   help posted by mike on 12/29/2000 at 2:24:49 PM
If your looking for a seat try ebay fastbacks usally had the white glitter seats schwinn makes repoduction seats but i not sure if they sell white i know they sell other colors like green red blue ect. i nkow that persons makes white glittes ectept they do not say stingray on the meatal tag on the back. the cables were ethier a grey or a white in color. try to find a local used bike shop for a shifter they arre hard to find also try ebay if you whant to rebuld a deralier try a used bikes shop because they ussaly will have the right old parts.yo can get correct paint proablly a any custom paint shop it is best to have them paint it beacuse they know what their doing. also do not smooth out any welds or natraly rough marks like lowriders do bacuse it will decease the value of the bike. you need to find fast back handle bars the look just like racing bike i know that my local bike shop has some try ebay your bike if restored right could be worth from 500-1,100 a good book to get would be Schwinn sting ray by liz fried they have maney pages that tell abount the fastback.

AGE / VALUE: Am I Nuts? (Manta-Ray w/ 20" Wheels!) posted by: Leif on 12/22/2000 at 12:48:06 PM
In the early 70's I had a green Manta-Ray w/ green glitter grips & seat (no stripe), 3-speed stick shift, and I would swear 20" rims.
The only reason I am so sure of this, was that I recall the bike sitting next to my friends' bikes often enough and it looked
just like their Sting-Ray's. The wheels did not look any larger like the 24's would have. (All of the Manta-Ray's I have seen were 5-speeds too.) Mine was definitely a 3-speed stick.
The only thing I can think of was that perhaps it was a leftover Fastback that the dealer "updated" to the new model by changing over the chain guard.

Comments?
