I am debating on restoring a Blue 5 Speed Sting Ray. The paint has some surface rust, what is the best way to remove the surface rust. Your help is appreciated.

brillo pads work with any rusting on the chrome, it might not be recommended but it works for me. I've also used s.o.s. pads to clean up frames, it just depends how serious the rust is, it might also scratch the paint. thats my best suggestion

i use 400 x-fine steel wool, with wd-40 on it. works pretty good

Don't use steel wool or Brillo. The steel in those pads will scratch chrome and small bits will imbed in the chrome and then rust. Use bronze wool pads like the ones we sell in the Vintage Bicycle Cleaning Kit we advertise on this site.

No more Schwinn Grease for me, ma. It's nasty. posted by ChristopherRobin on 7/25/2000 at 10:20:38 AM
I am sure the new Schwinn grease in the plastic jar is good quality it just that I DO NOT LIKE IT AND I AM GOING BACK TO PHILL GREASE (GREEN) IN PLASTIC TUBE! The loose ball bearings will not stick in this Schwinn grease during re-assembly!

"OO' no the Schwinn forum is down. Is this the end of the world".... (Well, it HAS put an end to a lot of selling & trading).

"All of you get a life with the Schwinn forum, Who cares about it"... (People who collect mostly Schwinns, for one).

"You are in a good forum now!"... (Agreed, but not to be rude- I prefered the Schwinn site).

"Get a life people"... (Well, can't argue with that one)!

AGE / VALUE:   How much is a huffy wheel worth? posted by: Ray on 7/21/2000 at 2:54:52 PM
I found someone on the web that has a huffy wheel for sale. It appears to be completely original. He is asking a lot of money for it. I was just wondering if it was worth the money. The bike is blue in color and has a tall sissybar, strange looking chainguard, drag brake, steering wheel with column cover, and a fastback front wheel. It is a coaster model bicycle. He is asking $850. Is this too high or about right? He told me that it is extremely hard to find (Is this true?). I know this is the first one I have seen for sale in a long time. What do you think?

RE:AGE / VALUE:   How much is a huffy wheel worth? posted by BillG on 7/22/2000 at 1:15:57 PM
I've seen them go for $250 up to $650

RE:AGE / VALUE:   How much is a huffy wheel worth? posted by John on 7/22/2000 at 7:52:35 PM
They are pretty rare. It has to be mint for that kind of money I would have to agree 250- 600 range.

AGE / VALUE:   Scwinn Sting Ray fastback posted by: Mike on 7/21/2000 at 10:45:35 AM
Today I bought an orange Scwinn Sting Ray fastback for a song at a yard sale. The bike is all original and in great condition. It is a thumb shift 5 speed model # GK507512. Could someone please tll me the age and approx. value of this Bike?

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Scwinn Sting Ray fastback posted by Oscar on 7/22/2000 at 3:51:42 PM
Your Fastback was built July 1973. I couldn't even guesstimate the value, but if it's in great condition, it's probably worth more than you paid for it.

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Scwinn Sting Ray fastback posted by A on 7/22/2000 at 5:51:16 PM
Pretty sure that should be July of 1974... :)
Five speed, three speed, or coaster? Five speed should be worth the most- although the cool top bar shifter ended in '73. Three speeds seem to be pretty rare, coasters don't do much on Ebay. Regardless of any of that it's still a cool find! Being a garage sale find, I'd bet it's worth more than you paid for it!

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Scwinn Sting Ray fastback posted by Wings on 7/25/2000 at 12:28:51 AM
July 74 is correct.

Has anyone come accross any Ross Stingray bikes? I found a Polo Bike jr. that has 20" black rims, a std. seat, not bannana, short ape hanger handle bars, yellow paint, and original stickers( one says tubular steel frame ) It definitely has stingray lines and looks like some things have been removed, like the original seat.any info would be helpfull. ( I blame my neighbor for infecting me with the bug via his restored krate). Thanks
