AGE / VALUE:   16" Stingray Pixie posted by: Charlie on 8/4/2000 at 7:03:30 AM
I have a 16" Schwinn Stingray Pixie. It is a darker green color with a bright yellow banana seat. The serial # is 113356. I just got done cleaning the rust off of it and polishing the chrome. It has normal dings here and there. On a 1 to 5 scale for how good of shape it is in, I rate it a 4. If anyone knows the value of it please let me know. Thanks!

IN REPLY TO YOUR RESEARCH THAT THE BIKE YOU ARE REFERRING TO WAS MADE IN 1982-I THINK YOU ARE POSSIBLY WRONG-SCHWINN STOPPED MAKING STINGRAYS IN 1979 SO YOUR PIXIE WAS PROBABLY MADE FROM ABOUT 1965 TO 1972 AND FOR AN EXACT DATE=FORWARD ME THE SERIAL CODE AND I WILL LOOK IN MY REFERENCE BOOK-THANK YOU-JESSE-ALSO 10 YEARS OLD

Word is out on the street!!!!!!!!The guys at Waterford Precision Cycles matched the coppertone. Talk is that it is the best match anyone has ever did. It took them 3 months. I was told they are working on more. Not sure how much they will charge. I also heard that they are not doing the decals.

AGE / VALUE:   What is it???? posted by: ChristopherRobin on 8/3/2000 at 9:43:05 AM
I doubt it is worth anything, but what is it what does it go to?
This is a cast alloy B.M.X. type wheel, yellow with hearts or shapes similar to hearts with a Bendix single speed coaster brake hub built into the cast wheel says Bendix 70 Mexico. Cast alloy, but heavy (at least to me) There is a pair of them so If I do add it to the collection I will not be agrivated by only having one of em'. What does it go to? Whay are there no markings on this telling me who made it? This must be early B.M.X. stuff.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   What is it???? posted by Gordon on 8/3/2000 at 5:19:19 PM
If you look very closely along the casting I'll bet you will find the word "LESTER" on those rims. I only know that much because I have run into some of these myself. There are some with a cross-hatch pattern that I understand are highly sought after because they are for early Mongoose BMX bikes.

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   What is it???? posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/4/2000 at 8:12:05 AM
Thank you very much, I will pick them up. Did the early Mongoose use a Bendix single speed hub?

RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   What is it???? posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/13/2000 at 12:49:49 PM
These wheels are heavy and I am not impressed with this hub but I have em.

I keep seeing this disc brake rear wheel 20 inch, I do not know what it goes to, It is missing some stuff, but I cannot bear to leave it there any longer. This has been driving me crazy every time I see this thing. How many diffrent brands of kids bicycle had a disc brake setup anyway? Today I venture inside this yet unexplored room with the running water, and no light, the door fell apart when I pulled it open. It was already off the hinges. There is some kind of kids bike with a sissy bar, but whatever is in there is going to be rusty and perhaps I can salvage something from one of the bikes. With my luck I will find something really sought after but in really poor shape.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Oh heck, I'll bring it home anyway. posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/3/2000 at 9:54:07 AM
I went rummaging thru this rotten barrel, listening as the steady stream of running water got worse and worse.Water will destroy these parts and bikes that are lined up in rows. It is like trying to get the treasure out of the sinking ship. I just discovered the trap door the other day, totaly by accident, the stairs are gone, rotted away.

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Oh heck, I'll bring it home anyway. posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/5/2000 at 2:25:03 PM
My friend is asking me "Dude how will we ever get these out of here? There is no stairs left?"

RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Oh heck, I'll bring it home anyway. That is if I ever get out of here!! posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/16/2000 at 10:52:10 AM
It is dark down here, the lights went out, my flashlight (torch) went out. I can't see, I cant move there are too many bikes. The owner is upstairs and cannot hear us. I cannot move because of all these bikes crammed in here. The pedals get stuck in wheel spokes and getting something loose to haul up to buy is really difficult. "Oh this running water is ruining all these old parts, I'm all wet, dirty, Can't we do something and stop it!!?? "I came here to buy old bikes not fix plumbing!!

Schwinn only made one 20" cantilever frame for all models.

The kick stand on a Sting-Ray is longer than the kick stand on a normal 20-inch middleweight, to allow for the extra thickness of the balloon-sized tire on the rear end.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   stingray? posted by SchwinnFool on 8/3/2000 at 6:25:27 PM
Here is all I know, which is not much...

Pre 1966 Stingray frames are slightly different from the later models. Fastback frames are obviously different from regular rays as well. Girls frames beyond the obvious, have a different head and fork size. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   stingray? posted by kevin c on 8/4/2000 at 10:03:31 AM
That's right. 1963, 1964 and 1965 Sting-Ray frames are shorter. You can easily tell the difference by looking at the size of the triangle created by the frame behind the seat post. I think that Sting-Ray frames also are wider between the rear dropouts to accommodate the balloon rear tire.

I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ANY BIKE EXPERT OUT THERE. I HAVE A SCHWINN MINI SCRAMBLER ORIGINALLY IN SILVER MIST BUT SOME JERKY SPRAYPAINTED IT BLACK. ANY WAY TO REMOVE THE SPRAYPAINT WITHOUT ALSO REMOVING THE SILVER. AN AUTO SHOP TOLD ME TO USE LAQUER THINNER. THE OLD PAINT IS SHOWING THROUGH AND THE SPRAY PAINT LOOKS LIKE ITS COMING OFF. ANY REPLIES WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED.THANK YOU!!!

RE:AGE / VALUE:    posted by bob on 8/3/2000 at 8:00:44 AM
Laquor thinner will work. Also, Goof Off or Graffiti Remover from the hardware store will remove spray paint. Work fast in small areas to avoid damage. Be VERY careful around decals.

RE:AGE / VALUE:    posted by JUAN on 8/14/2000 at 7:40:10 PM
TRY SOME NEVERDAL ITS A CHROME CLEANER BUT IT CAN BE USED AS A REMOVER TRY IT IN A SMALL SPOT FIRST
YOU CAN BUY IT AT MOST AUTOPARTS STORES

RE:AGE / VALUE:    posted by RICKY on 8/21/2000 at 11:30:23 PM
I WENT WITH THE LAQUER THINNER WHICH WORKED GREAT. I RAN OUT AND FOUND THAT BIX PAINT REMOVER WORKS AS WELL. THE LAQ THINNER SEEMED TO BE THE BEST OF THE TWO. NOW I'M HAVING FUN WITH THOSE HARD TO REACH PLACES, AND FOR SOME REASON WHEN I TRIED THE THINNER ON THE CHAINGUARD THE PAINT DID NOT SEEM TO COME OFF. THE PAINT SEEMED TO BE THICKER, MAYBE TWO COATS OR IT ALSO LOOKED LIKE THE GUY PAINTED IT WITH HOUSE PAINT. IT'S A MYSTERY TO ME. ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!

AGE / VALUE:   Chopper question posted by: http://www.ChristopherRobin@starmail.com on 8/2/2000 at 9:33:54 AM
This 20 X 2.0 Sturmey-Archer wheel fits the Raleigh Chopper? I can switch the deraileur block from a 5 speed to a six speed without and difficulty right? The hub is interchangable with the Sprite deraileur hub or not? The Chopper rear 5 speed deraileur hub is shorter than on the Sprite but it will still work ok? Please advise. I looked up and there this thing was hanging on a nail.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Chopper question posted by ChristopherRobin on 8/13/2000 at 12:48:46 PM
Now it we can get it re-built without these nitwits losing it. It is on the owners desk but that is no guarentee!

I found another whole bike and we brought it home!!
