I have a green stingray with a JC (1967?) serial number in beautiful condition, not even a tear in the seat. I have looked on E-bay and elsewhere and don't see any just like it. Any ideas on what it's worth?

It probably just needs cleaning.

A month or two ago someone wrote up some good Bendix hub cleaning instructions. They are in the the archives on this site.

AGE / VALUE:   Sears bike posted by: Chris Lamb on 1/14/2001 at 8:22:25 PM
I have a sears stick shift 5 speed. It has shimano gears 24 inch thin tires with a frame large enough for an adult to ride. It's purple with a purple banana seat, hi rise handle bars and both hand brakes are mounted on the rear wheel. Neither the small chain guard or the frame say any model name on them. Can anybody tell me anything about this bike? Please E mail or post it.
Thanks, Chris

I just saw this post. Funny thing is that I was going to post the same question about the same type bike I picked up tonight. But mine is blue in color. I got it home and looked at the twin rear brakes and said to myself "that can't be right!! Someone took the front brake off and rear mounted it !!!" But alas I learned something new today. Kind of funky setup though. Say are these things hot? Is there anyone who can put a price range on these babies? Mine is complete, it has it's usual scratches, and could definately use a bath. Anyone care to comment?

Robert

AGE / VALUE:   Fastback posted by: Stingray-man on 1/14/2001 at 6:17:46 PM
I just aquired a Schwinn Stingray Fastback 3-speed. I found it when I was walking through an ally and found it in the garbage. It is a 1969. It is not complete and is very rusty. It needs tires, stick-shifter, a seat, and a shifter cable. Where can I find out about three speed hubs? I have no idea how they work. The one on the bike needs a complete overhall. I would appreciate any information you can give me.

for info on 3 speeds, try http://www.sheldonbrown.com/english-3.html
Some of the links are very useful, as are many of his other pages. One of the links here has parts breakdowns for most sturmey -archer hubs.

Good luck. There are more parts in this hub than an automotive automatic transmission. If you can find a copy in your local library, the early 1970's edition of Glenn's Bicycle Repair manual has an awsome step by step rebuild section on these hubs. I have done it once, but it will drive the pope to drink.
Good luck
Scott

I checked my local library for that repair manual, but they said some college professor had "lost" it so they charged him $5.95 for it. What do i do now?

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Fastback posted by scoot on 1/20/2001 at 9:39:40 AM
Offer him 10.00 for photo copies of it, or be nice and maybe he will copy them and mail them to you for free...besides, he found another copy at a used book store and purchased it and returned it back to the "local" library and told them he had found it and told them to keep the 5.95........and they did. feel better now?

Nope. Just proves you got a guilty conscience after all. Must have heard a voice say "hey daddy, where'd you get that book?"

i just aquired a ralegh chopper (`69 i`m told) but i dont know its value, and need some guesses. it is all original in red w/yellow letters, yellow has been touched up a bit (bout 20%) and is missing front fender and light. otherwise its perfect. has european internal rear 3-speed w/kick-back brake and stick-shift on top tubes. can anyone help w/value ideas? email me at kilostoys@aol.com. thanks

hey, easiest way to tell if made in 1969,is to look at headtube...loooong headtube is 69 only...way to tell year of man.......IF wheel is original, clean the rear hub,you will see the date code, will look like this 69 7 and either s-3 or s-5-that indicates number of gears............if you want to sell it,lmk, thanx,Rob

hi,my bike is copper i am the original owner since 1966, it is a slik chic with the 2 speed kick back, whitewall tires, original speedometer. i haven't located the serial number so where do i look, i have it upside down and don't see it stamped on the bottom anywhere. just trying to figure out what it's worth. who knows maybe i will just fix er up and pop a wheely. yee haw...........

RE:MISC:   what do i have? posted by Scoot on 1/19/2001 at 3:45:13 PM
the serial number should be on the left rear drop-out. (where the axle on the rear tire bolts to the frame) This sight has a great serial number chart. The only other place I know of that the serial nuber could be externally is below the name badge on the front, but if memory serves me correct, Schwinn started this in 1970. Also, you can remove the crank and it has the date molded into it.
Good luck and good riding,
Scott

MISC:   looking for info posted by: Tim on 1/8/2001 at 4:11:55 PM
My older brother had a purple AMF roadmaster Avenger 5 with a Sturmy Archer Twinshift (5 speeder)when we were kids. Complete with banana seat, high handle bars, and slick. I have been looking around and asking questions, and no one seems to know anything about it. So it sits all cleaned up in my cellar. Can anyone help me please ?

Well! I have been stepping around one of these in this basement and it is one of the few things I have left there. This one I know is light yellow. a 1960's metallic yellow. It is a A.M.F. Roadmaster Avenger 5 with a chrome chainguard. White seat, sisy bar but not a long one, missing wheels, center console shifter a nice bike that yells at me every time I step around it trying to get at other things like those darned pedal car parts. I know the bike well but I have yet to run across anybody who would want it and I'm sorry to say I do not know anything else. If you had one as a kid then it holds magic and it would agree it is a deserving canadate to get back on the road.

RE:RE:MISC:   looking for info posted by ChristopherRobin@starmail.com on 1/9/2001 at 2:30:30 PM
The one I see does not have a Sturmey-Archer twinshift like yours has but it is Shimano old Shimano or something else. I will look at this shifter. I could probably pick this up for 50.00-60.00 missing wheels. I didn't think it would be worth it, but then I don't know musclebikes as well as other things.

RE:MISC:   looking for info posted by Brandon on 1/9/2001 at 7:47:53 PM
Is the bike a 16x20? I have a few AMF bikes in my archives for my upcoming musclebike site, e-mail me a good pic. and I'll compare it against what I have....I may know someone interested in purchasing it as well. I would guesstimate it at $100+ complete, depends on the condition (obviously).

RE:RE:MISC:   looking for info posted by ChristopherRobin@starmail.com on 1/11/2001 at 1:29:59 PM
It looks to be a 16 in front and a 20 in rear. Also the shifter is Sturmey-Archer missing a cover piece(no problem) a three speed shifter, not a five. Metallic yellow. Shout if you want it.
