FOR SALE:   F/S 1973 Disc Brake Lemon Peeler posted by: Matt on 2/27/2001 at 12:36:08 PM
Very nice bike, had it at the Milwaukee show. Pics available upon request. Older recovered seat, perfect stripe, couple of dark spots, no rips. Rear fender has very slight bend at braces, hardly noticeable. Perfect chrome on both wheels, springer. Slight discoloration on inside of left handlebar side. Good grips, no rips. Perfect chrome on shifter, decal on side worn around edges. Paint is an 8.5 easy, several small scratches, largest on the top tube behind shifter, under cables. NOS Cables. Repop rear RWL slik, perfect front original superior. Disc brake caliper is missing the lock screw and spring, otherwise complete with perfect chrome. I'm trying to be as descriptive as possible, pictures tell the real story. The chainguard and screen is nearly perfect. Paint is very shiny. This is a very nice bike. Serious inquiries only, pics available this evening upon request. Asking $1300.00 plus shipping.

I need info on an old sears 5 speed stingray only numbers i can find are where the back wheel bolts on (502459730 54108) it has a 24 inch front tire. Is it possible to find parts for something like this? thanks jim

RE:AGE / VALUE:   stingray posted by kath on 2/27/2001 at 4:55:59 AM
First, it wouldn't be a Sting-Ray, because only Schwinn made Sting-Rays. But generically, it would be called a "musclebike".

In the picture database there is a 5-speed Sears musclebike with 24" wheels. Here is the link:

The Sears 24" bikes with a cantilever frame is usually a Sears Spyder. I think the cantilever frames ran until '68 or 69, I'm not extremely positive, then they switched to a Sears Screamer looking frame. They can be coaster, 3, 5, or 10 speed. There are a lot of parts on e-bay, and I know somebody who restores them if you are needing any specific parts. Hope this helps.

MISC:   Sissy bars posted by: Robert on 2/25/2001 at 6:49:42 PM
Okay guy's (and gals). My question is: Are there two different styles of sissy bars on '65-'66 sting-rays. I am not speaking of either the '63 1/2 or '64's square back's. I mean the three holed axel mounted bars after them, and before the one that used the clamps. I bought on ebay what was supposed to be a sissy bar that came off an original girls '65. The picture looked decent online, but upon receiving bar, I noticed that there was no indenture where the seat is attached. I've seen another like it today on an early 'ray at a vintage bike parts shop in my area. Are these both imposters, or just a variation in style used back in the day?

Robert

RE:MISC:   Sissy bars posted by mike on 2/25/2001 at 9:29:11 PM
Robert, 1965 stingrays had a sissy bar high-loop type. I believe thats the type you're looking for... Since they were only out for about one year (schwinn sometimes extended or introduced a change late or early year to year) They are difficult to locate and pricey if you find one...Good luck I hope this helps...

RE:MISC:   Sissy bars posted by mike on 2/25/2001 at 9:38:35 PM
Robert, Take a look on Ebay Item #1115880187 this is a pair of late 1964 Rays with 1965 high loops I think these are the ones you're looking for...Me too I need one also

RE:RE:MISC:   Sissy bars posted by Kevin C. on 2/26/2001 at 4:49:38 AM
The high-loop bar is stamped PERSONS on the bottom, and it is indented for the seat bolt holes. There were some later Japanese copies made, which, I am told, are identical except for the PERSONS stamp.

RE:RE:RE:MISC:   Sissy bars posted by Robert thanks!!! on 2/26/2001 at 4:42:02 PM
I guess I'm screwed again by a mis-representing seller on ebay. This has only happened twice in the 2+ years of buying parts there. I must admit I can't complain too much, as I've saved many $$$$'s in gas and travel expenses with internet purchases, not to forget seemingly unending array of difficult parts easily aquired at the touch of a button.

MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by: mike on 2/23/2001 at 4:27:24 PM
Does anyone know if a 65 deluxe ray came with a WW slik or did it come only with a WW studded tire? I've got both, but I would prefer the slik. thx

RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by Kevin C. on 2/24/2001 at 12:46:39 AM
I have a 1965 Schwinn catalog. The Deluxe Sting-Ray was listed as having a "nylon studded whitewall rear tire." The only whitewall Slik on any 1965 Sting-Ray was on the Slik Chik.

RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by mike on 2/24/2001 at 2:34:26 PM
Thanks Kevin, I think I'm still going with the NOS WW slik because I think it looks better. and thats what I would have done when I was 11 years old too. sliks are cooler than Knobbies...

   RE:RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by chris.s on 2/24/2001 at 4:02:15 PM
Yes slicks are cooler then nobby but when your riding,or at a show you want aii the bikes to be different, when we ride ,wife is on a roadmaster, son is on a 63 stingrayand other son is on a bicenyennial stingray all in new shape boy do we turn heads

RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by mike on 2/24/2001 at 5:38:07 PM
Chris,I don't plan to display my bike in a show, but this bike is about a 8 to 8.5 and I do remember reading somewhere that dealers would mix and match some minor items for the customer, in order to make a sale... so I consider replacing a knobby for a slik minor... it's still a great bike to me and my sons...thx

RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by Stan on 2/24/2001 at 9:48:57 PM
with all due respect Mike, THEN WHY DID YOU ASK? Also, if your w/w slik does not have a yellow oval emblem on it, then it's even less correct.

RE:RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by mike on 2/25/2001 at 1:42:06 PM
Stan, I asked for Information. The more info I get, the more I become informed, Plus maybe the slik was correct in the first place. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Yes it does have a yellow emblem but the knobby does not. thx

RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by Stan on 2/25/2001 at 4:38:01 PM
Mike. Feel completely free to put any tire on the bike you wish. No one will care, UNLESS you pull out that old saw about Schwinn dealers mixing and matching parts to their customers wishes. While true, it's obviously not true of your bike, since you have both tires and want to put the slik on. It bothers people when guys put the wrong parts on a bike, then tell the old Schwinn dealer story to cover it. It sounds a little like you want the bike to pass for original "as sold" condition.

RE:RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by Raymond on 2/25/2001 at 5:15:15 PM
Funny, I think I am a "people" and it doesn't bother me.

RE:RE:MISC:   1965 Deluxe stingray posted by mike on 2/25/2001 at 5:19:04 PM
Stan, This bike is not all original nor did I find it this way; It was a wreck, but I just wanted to know if since sliks I believe were availible in 65 if this came that way, If I wanted to sell it which I do not, I would be honest and tell them what it needed to make it original to spec. Yes stan I will put any tire I want to on this ray, I already did...looks great and thats all that matters to me.
