WANTED:   HUFFY 5SP MUSCLEBIKE posted by: ERIC on 4/20/2001 at 3:10:34 PM
WHEN I WAS A KID, I HAD A HUFFY 5SPEED MUSCLEBIKE. IT WAS PURPLE, HAD A STICK, FAT AND SKINNIES, AND A CHAINGUARD RESEMBLING A LOUVERED SIDEPIPE AS I REMEMBER. ANYTHING RESEMBLING THIS OUT THERE OR ANY FURTHER INFO OR MODEL NAME?

RE:WANTED:   HUFFY 5SP MUSCLEBIKE posted by christian on 4/20/2001 at 3:28:53 PM
you were a lucky kid! the bike you describe is non other than the famous huffy purple rail. although they are spendy, you may have better luck posting local want ads and might find one at a reasonable price. i have one coming next week, but i am trading my old computer system for it. (ill probably be keeping it). good luck, and check on ebay once in a while if you dont mind paying the price which is anywhere from $200 in decent shape to $700+ in mint condition. also, go to my bicycle discussion forum and post your want ad there. the address is:www.angelfire.com/dbz/forum

WANTED:   Murray three-speed posted by: Brian O~Kelley on 4/19/2001 at 12:39:09 PM
I'm looking for information on the bike I had as a kid. It was a Murray three speed with the shifter on the top tube, slick on the back, green sparkle banana seat, high rise handle bars and green/yellow paint that blended/changed towards the middle of the bike. Have not been able to locate any information or a bike itself on the web yet and any information would be greatly appreciated. I had a neighbor that had the Apple Krate, and it's fun to see info on those, but really want to look into getting what I had years back. Thanks!

Everyone asks that question on this forum from time to time, but it is hard to even make a guess without the following information (taken from the page where VVVintage describes their price guide):

Make
Model
Year
Male/Female style
Front tire dimensions
Rear tire dimensions
Front brake type
Rear brake type
Number and type of speeds
Features (tank, racks, lights, stick-shifter, etc.)
Condition

Without that set of minimal information, no one can even make a guess.

generally, assuming that it is complete and in c-8 condition,69'-70's rays are worth $300.00+ depending on features like:fenders,springers,multi-speeds,etc. so to answer your question on the fair lady girls bikes carry a lesser value but are a great source for parts to finish those cherry 68' three speeds. it should be worth about $200.00 give or take. i hope this gives a little light for you.

AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by: Gary on 4/16/2001 at 10:40:16 PM
Finally got a 71 stingray parked next to my 65 Junior. NOT even CLOSE to the same frame. the more you look the more you find, from all the tube angles to the length overall and behind the seatpost, its only a look-alike. kickstand, crank, different. only thing the same is the fork, and i may also be wrong there, as mine has the early large neck.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by mike on 4/17/2001 at 6:15:59 PM
Gary, try a 65 standard ray and see if it measures up...

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by OK already on 4/19/2001 at 9:50:03 PM
65 Junior frames are different than 65 Standard Stng-Ray frames. The Juniors use the same frame as '63/'64 Sting-Rays (called SHORTIE frames). When Schwinn made the bigger Sting-Ray frame for '65, they renamed the old frame Sting-Ray Junior. OK? It's not really such a big mystery. They're obviously different if you put them side by side.

RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by Kevin C. on 4/20/2001 at 6:09:11 PM
Are you sure? I think the 1965 frame was a shorty, too.

RE:RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by mike on 4/20/2001 at 11:44:47 PM
I have two standard 65's, a 76 junior, and a 74 standard. The 76 junior is shorter than the 65 and the 65 is shorter than the 74, Now that should make this real confusing...

RE:RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by OK already on 4/22/2001 at 1:05:46 PM
Kevin. I wouldn't have said it if I wasn't sure. Schwinn went to the bigger Sting-Ray frame in about February/March '65. If you think the '65 frames are shorties, it's because you don't have a '65. I have four '65s, five '64s, and a '65 junior. The differences are obvious to the eye. You don't need a tape measure.

RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by mike on 4/23/2001 at 6:39:07 PM
I have two EA standards and they are shorter than my 74, did schwinn make the frames larger later? Remember my 76 junior is also shorter than my 65 frames...

RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   StingRay Junior Frame size posted by Tom on 5/11/2001 at 8:18:12 PM
Hey OK Already I have a 65 standard (serial # GA), a 70 junior and a 73 standard, they are all different lenghts, starting with the Junior then the 65 then the 73, I also have a 65 slik chik and the space between the fender brace and the seat tube is the same as the 65 boys, so, with all due respect I think Kevin is correct. 65 where shortes also, unless 63 and 64 were shorter and 65 were different all together.

AGE / VALUE:   Western Flyer posted by: Tweety on 4/16/2001 at 5:37:18 PM
I have 1 Murray frame,1 Kent frame, and 1 gauranty frame. The Murray and the Gauranty have parts like bars, fenders, fork.I forgot one bike complete Western Flyer with every thing but it's a girls bike. Is any of this any good.

Western Flyer posted by Mike Stone on 4/17/2001 at 8:42:43 PM
Yes, Tweety, it's all good; either whole or for parts.

Parting out girls bikes has some value because the parts are generally in better condition than the boy's bikes.

The only useable parts of the girl's Western Flyer, though, would be the rims/tires, gooseneck, crank/sprocket, rear carrier, bearings, and seat post. The tank, handlebars, grips, saddle and frame are all girls bike specific.

If your bike tank has a light, the lens would be valuable.

You are probably better off selling it whole or keeping it.

Mike

FOR SALE:   NOS 333 Hub shells posted by: Jim on 4/16/2001 at 4:04:47 AM
Any one interested in 5 NOS 333 three speed hub shells? These would be correct on offbrand muscle bikes

RE:FOR SALE:   NOS 333 Hub shells posted by ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 4/19/2001 at 4:47:13 PM
The Ross Apollo 3 speeds had these hubs. I had one and we oiled the hubs all the time. I don't use the Shimano or 333 these days, and I like and collect the Sturmey-Archer hubs now. One thing I will say about the 333, it was kid friendly. I never came home after hitting my crotch on the top bar. It never went out of adjustment. I never got off the seat and rode this bike. It would be a bit difficult to stand on the pedals and ride on this type of bike. All those years on it I never had to fool with the indicator chain thing. It never sliped, once.
I hope Albert doesn't see this posting. He loves Shimano and 333! Are these just the shells? No innards? I haven't met anybody who reassembles these but I am probably wrong.

Ronny, you need to provide more information:
- What model is it?
- What is the serial number (so you can figure out the year the bike was built using the serial number charts on this site)
- How many speeds?
- What size tires?
- etc etc
