AGE / VALUE:   1971 Schwinn "Grey Ghost" Krate posted by: Dan on 8/2/2001 at 3:01:15 PM
I have a 1971 Schwinn 5 speed "Grey Ghost" Krate that I am interested in finding out the potential value and any information on restoration. This bike has been in my possession since I was a kid, and it is in good shape. All the parts are original, there is some rust on the chrome, wheels, etc, the tires might need replacing. Any information regarding value, cleaning products to use, decals, paint (might not be needed) and techniques will be greatly appreciated.

   RE:AGE / VALUE:   1971 Schwinn posted by ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 8/2/2001 at 5:31:49 PM
The local bookstore has a Sting Ray book. Check e- bay, as bicycle is valuable.

Keep it as original as possible. I think they made the gray ghost only one year (1971??) Check out the stingray summary on this site.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   1971 Schwinn posted by jim on 8/4/2001 at 10:53:45 PM
it's only worth about $5. i'll buy it for $20 though! just kidding. ghosts can go as high as $1500+ in the condition you described. i'd hang on to it if i were you (or take my offer)

We are preparing to expand and grow over the next couple months. Here’s an overview of our plans:

1) The shop will be closed the week of August 4 – 10, 2001. No orders will ship during this week.

2) Sunday August 19th is the 5th Annual Larz Anderson National Bike Show and Swap at the Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA. If there are any particular bicycles or parts you want us to bring to the show, please let us know. We’re limited in space but we may be able to accommodate you. We’ll have a number of bicycles and parts which we still have not had time to post on our web site including a 1969 Orange Krate, a 1967 coppertone Sting-Ray, a 1958 Raleigh with an enclosed chainguard, wicker baskets, frame pumps, NOS parts and more.

3) Some time this fall we will be making some infrastructure changes:
a) We will be moving to a faster web service in order to handle the 200,000+ hits we’re getting each week at OldRoads.com.
b) We will be opening up a retail shop with a real street address, repair shop, restoration service and a real, published phone number.

We would like to thank you all for your support, participation and suggestions in helping us build VVVintage Vintage Bicycles on the web over the past 6 years. We look forward to serving you and providing more on-line vintage bicycle resources in the future.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   amf roadmaster 20incher posted by JimW. on 7/29/2001 at 9:15:51 AM
Tom,
The best source of aftermarket parts for 20" musclebikes is
the Lowrider bike parts outfits. http://hiwheel.com is one
good source. They have seats, tires, fenders, wheels, etc.
If you're not doing a restoration, this is the simplest way
of achieving a nice-looking bike. I've found that the finish quality is better than traditional aftermarket parts.
