E- bay item # 1088693817
Origonal Raleigh Chopper bike

Mine is exactly like this only I have a high cissy bar and the extra headrest with it.
This color is known as "Flamboyant Green" and it is also Lenton Green as the Lenton Sports was painted in this color.
You don't see many Flamboyant green Raleigh Choppers with the high bar. Mine is a 5 speed but it can be changed to a 10 speed If I want to, right?
No realation to seller, not my auction.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Raleigh Chopper posted by Catfood Rob on 3/31/2002 at 4:14:55 PM
Why change to 10 speeds..... youll never use them... and losing the chainguard, so you can fit twin cog and front durellier makes the bike ugly. Plus finding correct shifter/ front cog wont be easy.
The 5 speed mk1 was a rare beast....... keep it original!

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Raleigh Chopper posted by Chris on 4/2/2002 at 1:09:33 AM
Thanks, I will keep it origonal. But that means I need a chainguard and in this color paint. Flamboyant green.

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Raleigh Chopper posted by ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 4/3/2002 at 7:28:18 PM
Ugly? well yes that's true. But some people like it looking muscular like that. That particular chainring was found on the Blue Streak bike with a diffrent arm. Now if I could find this crank without a lot of hassle or expense that would be fine. Too bad the Raleigh Record didn't use this exact double chainring. It stays a 5 speed with the "snowflake" crank.

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Raleigh Chopper posted by Catfood Rob on 4/3/2002 at 8:06:41 PM
Over here we had the Raleigh Olympus... similar to you record, the smaller framed version had the 10 spd chopper crank. O nly the small leg size frame had the chopper length crank. But theyre pretty damn rare anyway.... Theres some chainguards on e-bay right now... check e-bay.co.uk instead of e-bay.com . Dont know if theres a green however.
Also, to convert your 5 to a 10, you need to remove the front chainguard bracket, and weld on a bracket for the front durreliur...but I suppose you could source a bolt on bracket... but it wouldnt look "right"
Stick with 5.

Guess I thought I'd blow my own (triple-note) horn here too...Jim from Bikerodnkustom did a killer layout of my bike pics. His site features kustom bikes of all makes and designs. Since mine are/were Sting Rays in some form, I thought I'd share my ideas for kustom bikes using my favorite platform. I've got stock/original Schwinns that are real pretty too...these kinda let me go off in a different direction while still leaving the Sting Ray identity present.

Check out that kool chopper! I've got some crazy ideas just looking at that. Aloha...Brian Mikami

Thanks for the comps Stacey. It's a kool frame and kinda rare 20" model. The rear stay was bent when I got it but a little body work fixed that. Must be one of the last 'tank' models in the Schwinn lineup. I made a 20" girls Fiesta with 1/2 tank in Kool orange and white for my friend. The Fleet (what I call 'Oldboy') just evolved nicely as I found the right parts to put on. The yellow and white color combo just clicked and was probably inspired by the Moon Eyes color theme of their race cars. Every bike I owned has a slik..I just love 'em. I just happened to locate a kool Typhoon balloon S-2 tire that completed the package. The tread looks just like the Westwind only on a fatter tire. I love the total look of this bike. It's just missing a motor!

AGE / VALUE:   Soda pop,Schwinn bikes, recent car ad posted by: ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 3/27/2002 at 8:31:16 PM
Let me see, If I was the Schwinn Company selling muscle bikes back in the early 1970's I would have tied it in with an advertising campaign with orange, or grape soda pop. Kids like soda pop, put a picture of a Schwinn bike on the bottle. A collectors series of bottles. Then again they didn't have any trouble selling these bikes back in the day did they?

My favorite Lexus ad is asking why didn't we ever get the futuristic cars Detroit promised us? Then they show and mention Lexus! I love that! Bravo! They actually show footage from the 1950's and early 1960's!

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Soda pop,Schwinn bikes, recent car ad posted by Stacey on 3/29/2002 at 1:13:02 PM
You have GOT to be kidding, right Chris?!? The pompous eliteist at AS&Co band together with other branding for co-op advertising. I don't think so. 8-) Consider the fact that the success of the Schwinn product was soley driven by their geniuses marketing one thing and one thing only... EXCLUSIVITY. Using the same components on their bikes that many other makers used, from the same suppliers, only the parts for Schwinn carried the famed "Schwinn Approved" marking. It's known that many Weinmann calipers will fit correctly on the Schwinn bikeand the made calipers for Schwinn. However, only those calipers bearing "Schwinn Approved" are the proper units for certian models. Add to that the Schwinn tire fiasco of the "S" or fractional sized tires. Did that make the bike better? Nope, you were just forced to go back to the Schwinn dealer when you needed a new tire.

IMHO, Schwinn has pulled one of the greatest promotional coups on the bicycling public of all time, yet today the lemmings still follow. Go figger! Off branders rule!

In the wind,
Stacey

They probably were doing some kind of advertising work related to the Krates and Rays at the time but nothing really outstanding or lasting. I should remember it and I don't. They probably didn't have a budget for it or were too cheap. Muscle bikes and the off brand ones rule because they are so diffrent. I have a 1972 C.C.M. catalog and the kid's bike are shown. "The Cheeta" and the other off brand companies got wild and inventive with what they had to offer. I relate the knobby tires and the start of B.M.X as the beginning of the end for the accessory tricked out fun bike.

AGE / VALUE:   20 X 2.125 X 2 TIRES? posted by: ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 3/26/2002 at 12:49:28 AM
They looked interesting, and I didn't need no hook on the end of a pole, because I'm so tall! These are for some moped I feel because they are so thick but he swears they are for a bicycle. The size is something I have never seen before!
It is 20 X 2.125 X 2

by 2? a heavy duty rear tire! I never see these anyplace and I'm worried about fender clearence and I like things to match also.
Whats up with these tires?

   RE:AGE / VALUE:   20 X 2.125 X 2 TIRES? posted by Stacey on 3/26/2002 at 3:07:25 AM
Chris, What type of tire; standard middleweight/ballooner street tread? Perhaps the X2 designation is for 2 ply... A heavy duty tire for the front of a Cycletruckh pehaps?

What say you MNSmith?

   RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   20 X 2.125 X 2 TIRES? posted by ChristopherRobin2@starmail.com on 3/27/2002 at 1:22:08 AM
Yes, standard ballooner middleweight tread. Theres nothing knobby about it. A Taiwan brand, it's new stock. Heavy duty-ish. 3 are there, probably 10.00- 15.00 depending on his mood. Not a slick niether. I forget the name on the tire, That would help I know, but I have said the size correctly.
Also a 18 X 1 3/8 aftermarket (pair) a 16 X 1 3/8 pair too.

I have a sting ray with a serial #N4. It is a Coppertone DeLuxe. I have been unable to find a chart with "N" on it. Can you help pin down a date?

   RE:AGE / VALUE:   Serial # ? posted by butnut on 3/27/2002 at 8:26:05 AM
Hey Charles. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Schwinn did not start their (A)=Jan, (A)=1965 coding until AFTER 1964...which your bike is. Maybe the N coding is something a Schwinn baloon tire guy may know. M will be December for Sting Rays and that has'nt changed. Sounds like you got a sweet '64 Deluxe though....
