WANTED:   CHIPPER not chopper info posted by: kev on 4/10/2003 at 9:32:05 PM
Can jeff, whose picture of a raleigh chipper is in the photo database of this site please contact me?
I would like to get some info on the american specification chippers, as they appear to have been quite different to the ones we have over here in the united kingdom.
cheers - kev
Also, anybody got any information / literature / pictures of Eatons fastback 100's (rebadged raleigh choppers)?

ok here is the deal, i want to build a custom bike from scratch. i need to know what kind of metal to use, and how thick etc... i want to fabricate almost all the parts myself fenders frame handlebars, the only thing i cant make are the rims and such. but i am looking for spoke rims, if anyone knows a good place to order rims that would help, also i want to make it a five speed or something, and i want to have a shifter mounted on the frame instead of on the handlebars, would that be hard to do ?? i would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. thanks

Hi Shannon,
You probably should have posted this on the Customs list, as that's where the people interested in this subject tend to hang out.

Most people scratch-building bikes use 4130 CrMo aircraft tubing, as it's stronger than cheaper tubing, so you can use a thinner-walled tubing, and save on weight. For typical bike frame use, .028 is fine; for forks .035 or even .062 is a good idea, especially for a long chopper fork. You can buy tubing from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. Their tube page is at: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/mepages/4130tubing_un1.php
They also have 4130 in sheet, rod, square tube, plate, etc.
Of course, you'll need to become pretty good at cutting and welding expensive materials before you start work. It's certainly possible to make your own handlebars, etc. but keep in mind that chrome plating is very expensive, and unless you have a design nobody is already manufacturing, it makes a lot more economic sense to buy off-the-shelf components. It's also a good idea to take an objective look at your design skills, and put a lot of time into the design process before you start hacking. It seems pretty pointless to go to all the trouble and expense of building your own bike from scratch if you're not going to end up with something better-looking than everything else out there.
http://bikepartsusa.com has almost every sort of rim you could want.

MISC:   1968? StingRay posted by: Christopher on 4/6/2003 at 1:19:20 AM
I just bought what appears to be a 1968 SingRay(LD40397)that is sky blue.I'd really like to restore this bike, but it's missing the original seat and sissy bar.Any idea what color the seat should be,and how do I tell the difference between a DeLuxe and standard?? Also where can I get the paint and tampo decals for the restoration??

I am really stoked about this bike,I had a 1966 StingRay when I was a kid and I belive it had a white seat with metallic silver specks??(sky blue frame and whitewall tires) Am I correct?? Would the 1968 have the same options??

i should have a blue seat and i could buy a pair of stickers for you for 20 shipped theyll be white correct ones and if you go to pep boys you can find the riht paint there i have a 66 stingray project right now i wanna sell

Chris:
I think in 1968 they use a silver saddle, but near the end of '68 (L-December) they may have used a colored saddle on the Deluxe (fender) models. It looks like they used silver saddle on the basic fenderless bikes and color specific ones on the Deluxe models in '69. This is as good as I can see in my "Collectible Schwinn Sting-Ray Bicycles" book.

Deluxe bikes had fenders and super deluxe bikes had a little chrome showing on the chainguard. Get correct matched paint from Hyperformance Rays and decals. You can alos get water transfer decals from Memory Lane.

RE:RE:MISC:   1968? StingRay posted by Christopher on 4/8/2003 at 1:39:54 AM
This bike I have now is a '68. It doesn't say DeLuxe on the chain guard, but has chrome fenders.Since it's a late 68 bike is either saddle color correct?? And what about hand grips?? This bike has the original ones, they are blue. My old '66 had white. Also, what is the correct rim/wheel assy for the front, and what size tires and type(black knobby, whitewall etc) I get a bit confused on "S-2 S-7" etc rims,as I don't know which type this bike should have.

On another note,my biggest "problem" so far is my 9yr old son,who cannot stop riding this bike!!

RE:MISC:   1968? StingRay posted by Christopher on 4/8/2003 at 1:42:33 AM
What I meant to ask regarding the blue handgrips was would that determine the saddle color??

RE:RE:MISC:   1968? StingRay posted by Christopher on 4/8/2003 at 1:59:36 AM
Sorry!!! It is a DeLuxe.I just looked at it again, and you can just barely make out the wording on the chain guard. Thanks for all the help,it's really appreciated.

It should have a S-2 rear wheel. The junior Stingrays and girls models have the S-7 rear wheel. All Stingrays have S-7 on the front.

RE:RE:RE:MISC:   1968? StingRay posted by Russell on 4/10/2003 at 4:05:39 PM
My blue '67 Stingray Deluxe has blue grips and a whitewall knobby rear tire. I'm not really sure what is correct in '68. It would probably be easier to secure a bw Schwinn knobby 20x2.125 and a bw Westwind 20x1-3/4 front tire. Also forgot to say that Super Deluxe models have a 20" springer front fork in my last post.

You need to check out some pictures of some bikes listed for sale in the Schwinn For Sale forum. This might be more help to you.

To those of you who have a nice Musclebike, This applies to you. Don't you just want to slap the S#%@ out of people who think your bike is a lowrider? I have nothing aginst people who have lowriders, It's just not my thing. My all orig. 68'Stingray 5 speed is not the same thing as a twisted fork gold/velvet chain wheel bike! Had to vent. Thanks

Hey, Cool man, I am 15 and really love them too. I have a 1977 schwinn stingray that I ride a lot. I got it when I was 11. I used to have a huffy slingshot 5 speed that I sold a while back, kinda regret it thgough. I also used to have a raleigh chopper in the makes, but sold off all the parts to fund my mtn bike that I am about to start racing. I still have my stingray, I also have a 77 schwinn bantam, and a 75 schwinn fair lady. It's all good, I just think it is cool to see someone else remotely close to my age and riding muscle bikes. I dont mind lowriders, its just not my style. I bought some lowrider reproduction parts for my bike though, I couldnt afford a real springer fork, so I bought a $30 lowrider. It serves its purpose, and I dont mind.

Later days,
Harry

f u Tom, dont just say you hate a certain bike because you do it shows how narrowminded you are i can understand where you coming from but thats not the way to show it. i have a passion for all bikes wether rat, Recumbent, Lowrider , Muscle bike,or Oldie. i have 4 bikes in my crib raging from white wall tire BMX to a Rat Patrol Built Chopper . i have a lowrider and the kids know that, now when they see me in the chopper they know im on a chopper and not on a POS(they like it so much im helping them build their own. theres a orange krate and a Cotton picker that ride around here all the kids know theyre not lowriders because theyre not low to the ground or have white walls. the owner told me before he could care less about the bikes $ value to him theyre just bikes the krate has the scars to prove it. open your mind and you might enjoy the hobby
