And the answer is (courtesy of my budd Matt in Delmar):

Larry, definitely gold dot levers on the Manta. The red ones were used prior to 1968 and often called "eye pokers" They had pointy ends which were a bit dangerous. The gold dot levers were rounded off with a ball type end for safety .

There you have it!

I could query Matt if he has any levers of that nature if you like.

AGE / VALUE:   Schwinn Tri-Wheeler (mini made in Japan) Talk about Tough posted by: SteveM on 8/6/2004 at 3:27:43 PM
Hello Everyone-

Not sure if this is the correct Discussion area, but I don't think a trike can get more muscle than this.

Yesterday I acquired a yellow Schwinn Tri Wheeler. It has a 20in fron and 16in rears. I know what you are thinking; hmm, so whats the big deal its a mini trike. It is, but this one has an articulated rear end, so the back can move independently. Its decked out with mini mudflaps (schwinn) mirrors, and giant plastic camera that is really a headlight and radio. Does anyone have any info on this thing? I would be greatly appreciative if I could even find out what year, or possible range of years. Its made in Japan, and the chain tensioner (looks like a rear derailleur)has a Bridgestone stamp on it. It has a freewheel, and there is what I believe to be a torsion bar from the bottom bracket to the rear end. This whole thing is really well made.
Thanks in advance,
Steve
Ps; Its yellow with a circle headbadge.

WANTED:   Mattel or Marx Varoom replica motor posted by: jack hall on 8/5/2004 at 4:55:24 AM
I'm looking for a replica motor made by Mattel or Marx in the 60's to 70's that was popular for use on muscle bikes.
I think one was called a "Varoom" and made by either Mattel or Marx. This motor was battery operated and made engine sounds when a button was pushed on the handle bars.
Any info or help greatly appreciated

Thanks

I've seen the bolt on motor kits go for $300+, gods only know what a complete bike in decent shape would fetch.

If you want to buy it, tell them to state a price. Then you can either dicker down or walk away.

MISC:   Identifying headlight posted by: Kurt on 8/3/2004 at 12:32:36 AM
Howdy folks,

I need help identifing the make and model of this musclebike/ballooner/middleweight headlight.

I saw it photographed on the Memory Lane Classic's site, but had no success in asking them about it.

Since Memory Lane was of no help, I created three different 3D C.A.D. renderings of the design to show the profile, front and 3/4 view of the headlight as a reference.

If anyone could help identify this light (or even better, steer me towards someone selling one), I would most appriciate it.

Thank you all for your help,

Kurt

I have a friend with a bike she is having difficulty valuing as she lives in an area with no resources for reappraisels. I have a serial number that begins with AE.... This denotes a 1969 model I think. The bike is in mint condition with all parts in place and nothing missing along with the original paint and no rust. Does anyone have any idea what this bike is worth?
by: 4.159.209.163

RE:AGE / VALUE:   1969 girls schwinn stingray posted by Robert on 7/28/2004 at 5:18:08 AM
Hi Tina. If your friends bike's serial # starts out AE, then that would be May 1965. This would be a more valuable bike than a 1969. For example...if her bike were a lime green with a original whitewall slik tire that had a yellow oval marking on the sidewall, then that would be one if not the most desirable in the girls lineup. A bike like that may commands upwards of $500. or better depending on condition and demand at a givin time. Remember Tina that that this is mainly a guys hobby and therefor the demand for girls bike are low. There are however more and more women out there these day's coming into the hobby, so I expect to see price jumping up somewhat as time marches on. If the bike is not a '65 but a later '60's, then a fair price would be around the $200-$300 range if its in really nice condition. Hope this info has been of some use. Best wishes!

How does this guy get away with it? He has been on eBay for the past few years selling reproduction Taiwan lowrider parts to unsuspecting people and calling them Schwinn Sting-Ray parts.

And now he's selling the same junk and calling them OCC (Orange County Chopper) parts.

Watch out for "bicycleheaven" on ebay. Doesn't ebay care?
Here's an example of his supposed OCC muffler exhaust:

Hmmm... an interesting and spirited discussion. While I'm not in total agreement with the sellor's "strategy", from a strictly business standpoint, it makes sense. Albeit the "ethics" are certainly questionable.

Ponder it with the following paradigm... There are a tremendous amount of folks out there that own "stingrays". So, if you have a bunch of stuff that will fit a stingray, be it OEM, aftermarket, whatever... and need to reach that market, how do you do it?

You put the words "Stingray" and "OCC" in your description so that it shows up when an owner of the aforementioned uses those words as search criteria on Ebay.

As to the "authenticity" of items being sold? Well, therein lies the rub. However... a couple of quotes should sum up the situation...

"There's a sucker born every minute." - P.T.Barnum

"No politician has ever gone broke by underestimating the stupidity of the American voter." (I can't recall to whom that's attributable)

No offence to anyone that may have procured anything from that sellor. Actually, I myself have purchased a "triple" honker horn from them and like anything, if you're happy with the merchandise and the price, then so be it.

Though I will say... some of the wording in their descriptions is borderline mis-representation.

Regards!

I have a friend who got taken by this flake, they list real Stingray Tires and shipped Duro's.. Took my friend for 50.00 dollars and he could have bought those same crappy tires at Wal-Mart. I Presonally know he gets a lot of his parts from JB Importers,(most of which is from Hong Kong)Stuff that diffently does not belong on a Real Stingray. I'd watch it if I were you, look into getting your parts locally or at Memory Lane, they have some of the same stuff for less. One last thing the Stingray slicks he is selling for 55.00 a piece plus shipping retail for 40.00.

Wow... sorry to hear about that tire B.S. for sure. Duros, eh? By no means worth that kind of dough. The item I procured was nothing significant and I was not expecting a concourse piece...

But then I did have a wee bit of an issue as to the procurement process itself. I called them to pay for the item via c.c. They took the info. A week later, no item and I get a dunning Email threatening to report me to Ebay as a non-paying bidder. So I call and ask what seems to be the problem... well, they found my info written on the back of a piece of paper!!!!

A week later the item arrives and I was pretty happy with it. I gave them the benefit of the doubt there as they move a LOT of merchandise and left positive feedback for transaction.

After all that, they left me "neutral" feedback. One word: "OK". Needless to say, I was NOT happy about that and now I don't leave feedback on anything until AFTER feedback has been left for me.

As to that tire situation, that's definitely a misrepresentation IMHO. A sellor that does such things will obviously rely on new business only as I'm sure they probably don't get a lot of repeat customers.

I have been watching and studying this guy for a bit. I won't disagree with anything said so far. I wonder how much he's making.
He is a power seller, after all but that can just mean that he's scammed a lot of unsuspecting folks. Being high or too high pricewise is one thing, not sending what was described or offered is another.

A high price is one thing if you can't find it but I know this game and he's not offering anything all that rare or mysterious or lets say an item you never see offered.
It's just common things that are over priced.
