Recently I assisted in clearing out an old bike shop and found a new schwinn caliente in a box. I have been looking for a serial # to find out how old it is but all I can find is the 4 digit stamp on the front emblem. On the direction sheet it has model RD-TY20. Any help would be appreciated. The 4 digit # is 3460. Some #'s on the box are 0811910 P.O.NUMBER C90120M Net Weight 15.2 KGS

I have an old nishiki royale and am in the process of fixing it- when searching for a new rear derailer I searched for the model number on the back which also happens to be rd-ty20 its a shimano sis. I dont have any other info just thought maybe there is some connection?

Which is the more desirable hub to use? The AW or the S3C? They are both coaster brakes. Thanks for the offer on the brake upgrade, will keep it in mind for when I know more about what I am doing.


I am having a dealer order a 28 spoke rim and lace one of the hubs in it. I need to know which one I should use.

Ed my choice would be the AWC I feel it is a stronger hub, at least it isn't the TCS. LOL

I'm new at this, just aquired a womens D.P. Harris & Co New York prewar Rollfast balloon tire bike that I'd like to restore. The paint is original, and the decals, tank and torpedo light are in excellent condition. The serial number makes no sense. Unfortunately, The back tire is horribly split, and it's missing a seat and the rack on the back.
Is there a way to get the rust off without ruining the paint job? There's not much, but the top bar of the frame is the biggest problem, with the rust covering half the bar. Also, I've looked everywhere for parts and I've found a lot of stuff for Schwinns and Releighs but pretty much nothing for Harris. Both tires are 26 x 2.125

In order to remove the rust you will have to remove the old paint down to bare metal. If it is only on the top bar, maybe you can just sand that smooth, prime an spray with a close or contrasting color. You can do a suitable job with spray cans if you take your time and make 3 or 4 thin coats rather than try to make a single heavy coat. Just sand down that top bar, amd mask off the rest of the bike with newspaper and masking tape. Try Memory Lane for parts. http://www.memorylane-classics.com/

Don't be too quick to strip that paint. Try scotchbrite and phosphoric acid. If the paint underneath is still sound, but pourous, you may get the rust off leaving a decent pain-job underneath that will clean up and look pretty good with a couple coats of wax.

I have two rear hubs. one is a AW 72 date, and the other is a S3C, both with coaster brakes. I am in the process of updating a middle weight make with a three speed hub so this old guy can ride it without pain.
These hub are for a 24 spoke rim and I can't find any 24 spoke wheels. Are they available? I can only find 36 spoke wheels

Can you get a 36 spoke housing to convert the unit, or am I stuck with orpham hubs.

Any help is appreciated.

Those are great hubs. Too bad they have only 24 holes. Maybe they were for cycles with 20" or 24" wheels.
I'd post this question under the English Roadster topic. They people there know a lot about Sturmey-Archer hubs and wheels.

I have a new brake upgrade for the S3C/
AW hub, unused. The one you have has 3 "pads" inside, and SW came out with a much better version- included in the later S3C II hub. I also have the shifter. Let me know if you need either one.

In cleaning out my grandmothers basement I found a Bicycle that had years of dust and is in need of cleaning. I found this website very helpful on what I can and should not do. I cant seem to find anything about the bike manufacturer though. It says "Fizit" and "Made in West Germany" on it. Obviously it is Post WW2 my guess is early 50's. Does anyone know anything about this Company? Any websites which might help me identify the year/model?
