would like info. and may possibly sell a 70's era, Evel Knievel inspired 20" mx bike. It is very good condition, and I belive to be totally original. It is white with a fiberglass tank, side panels, and rear fender (all one piece), with a #plate in the front triangle. The seat is integrated into the fiberglass and is not a standard bicycle seat. The name Star Streak is on the rear fender with a stars and stripes sticker running the length of the side. It was mfg. by Montgomery Ward, and was HEAVILY influenced by Evel Knievel (I just think they didn't want to pay for his name). Anyone with some info, let me know, this is the only one I've ever run across.

Hey. Spent the weekend away and hit a few bike shops. Nothing too spectacular, but picked up a few Champion stickers, some assorted pedals (1 beautiful ACS Stoker - but not a pair), and saw 3 Pro Class fronts. Still need 2 rears for the one's I have at home. And a 24" Araya 7X (blue). But even better than the assorted pieces. When I got home, there was a package waiting for me. Dan Goins sent me the Scagnetti book that he'd mentioned a couple of months back. And an old Motorcycle magazine w/ bike photos from '75. I wanted to acknowledge and thank him profusely. I'll get back with you Dan and see what I can do to return the favor.

Entered by: Paul (retrobmx@hotmail.com)

Message:
Please give me your thoughts on this dilemma: I have a Patterson PR-200 frame to restore. It has been spraypainted. It appears the original color was white. I wanted to get it chromed to match the chrome forks and bars I have (thanks Darren and BoyBoy for the hook-ups!) But I talked to a plating shop in Minneapolis who told me a price of about $250. So, here's my questions: Anybody know where I can get this plated for cheap? If I can't afford plating, powdercoating it white is my next option. Did Patterson powercoat their forks/bars/seatposts too, or did they only come in Chrome? What would your opinion of both the asthetics and the authenticity of a White PR-200 frame with chrome forks/bars/seatpost ? Gracias...

Message:
Track certified was a tag used by all the low-end department store bikes - Huffy, Murray, et al. If the MT Aeropro had this tag, it was because the Taiwanese didn't catch on that Track Certified was a dead giveaway that the bike was not a serious racer. Other than sentimental value, (I understand the sentiment: my first BMX bike was a piece of crap Huffy, after which I upgraded to a brand new piece o' Murray)I see no collectable value to any track certified bike. Ride on, Paul

Subject: Track Certification
Entered on: Feb 18, 1999 17:50
Entered by: Inspector #17 (T.C.B.@beaurocrat.us.gov.tcb)

Message:
During the late 70s and early 80s I worked as an inspector for the T.C.B.(Track Certification Board), a division of the C.P.S.C.(Consumer Products Safety Board). I was in most if not all of the meetings pertaining to T.C.(Track Certification). Although many people on this board may make sport of the Track Certification designation to myself and the other agents of the T.C.B. our work was deadly serious. Not everyones mommys and daddys would spring for a $500 bike. As part of the N.T.S.B.(National Transportation Safety Board) self esteem act of 1978 the T.C.B. was founded to give parents a guide by which to assure that the bike they bought little Johnny for Christmas would indeed keep the child happy through at least the Christmas hollidays. Not every bike nominated for T.C. received the designation. For example, rear dropouts must be mild steel and a minimum of 1/8" thick. This was years before companies like Standard adopted of rigid standards, they however use Chromolly or Cro-Mo as we in the T.C.B. refer to it. This material we determined to be too hard, ie: It does not provide proper bite on the axel nuts when a wheel is installed without washers. For those of you who do not understand the importance of this let me demonstrate. A 1/8" mild steel dropout will allow the axel nut to dig in 1-2/32" providing a safer connection. Kind of the equivilent of the front wheel safety washers found on all Track Certified bikes. One of the other guidelines we developed early on was a minimum weight limit of 33lbs. we felt that anything under that was just too light and would not provide a stable vehicle in an off road situation. I would love to tell you more of the important work out our group did but I must get over to ebay to raise the bid on the Huffy Monshock(a bike that surely would have been Track Certified had it not been released before the T.C.B. was founded) up over $100, a steal and surely worth 3 times that. I hope I have been able to enlighten you about the importance of Track Certification. Your tax dollars at work making the U.S.A. a better place to live.

OK everyone, i hit the jackpot. Back in the early eighties, i used to buy all of my bike parts from a guy in my neighborhood. Well anyway, i went to see him this past weekend to see if he had any parts left to help me on my current projects (refurbing four old redlines). So are you ready for this, he's got everything. He's got boxes of grips, old pads, brakes, brake handles, tuff wheels, araya's, peddles, cranks, all brand new. The guy is a super pack rat, and all this stuff has been in his cellar for 15 yrs or so. He's got all sorts of frames from a quadangle to a schwinn sting (both of which i don't think he'll part with). But i know he'll get rid of the parts. All the stuff is in it's original packages and in perfect condition. And let me tell you, he has got a ton of inventory. I saw a set of Tuff Neck handle bars brand new that i've never seen before. So i talked to him, and he does want to start to move some of this stuff so if you are interested you can contact me and i can get you in touch with him. Page me at 1-800-759-7243 pin # 387-6714.

Message:
Yes Scott, if thats your real name. I am very aware of the penalty for impersonating a T.C.B. inspector, I was part of the bi-partisan comission that developed the code of ethics for inspectors and the genral population. Let me tell you a few things punk. I was making this world a better place to ride a bicycle when you were still in diapers. Before I went to work for the T.C.B. I was directly responsible for training wheel regulations at the N.T.W.B.H.C.(National Training Wheel, Bell, and Horn Comission). Do you remember the aluminum training wheels that lasted about a week before blowing apart? That was no accident, but a direct result of my 3 year study which determined the ammount of hours needed to master pedaling and steering before attempting balance. You obviously are not aware of the punishment for accusing a T.C.B. inspector of impersonating himself. You are only the second person to ever do it. The first was a kid on the east coast named Moon Man Snickems about 20 years ago. Ring any bells? Once a promising racer who was in the running for a NORA Cup. He was never heard from again. We have relaxed our standards slightly but rest assured, we know where you are and will be watching you. Thank you for your attention in this matter.

I had a conversation with one of the original owners of Slingshot yesterday. No honestly I did!! I asked him misc. things ,but the most interesting items I'll share with you. Since I know alot of you will be stoked. I mainly asked him about production numbers. Now these come straight from the source. There was 250 square tubeds made. 550 roundtubeds made. Also about 20 cruisers were made. In addition they also made forks with a 5" steerer tube ,and socket style dropouts. The mystery is solved Dave! He also told me how he was the one who got Brent Walk to ride AA pro for them , and how he went on to win the Toledo Superbowl in 84. The guy is no longer in the bike industry, but he told me to keep in touch. He's a valuable source of information. He new facts and numbers about almost every line of bike from the early 80's late 70's. And has a stash of vintage machines, and the rarest amount of parts out of all of us hands down. Heh, Dave he has those Addicks Cranks. I will be talking to him in the future and sharing what he has to say with all of you. Oh, and Yes he has Slingshots , but "No!!!!" he won't sell them. So don't try and figure out who he is and bother the poor guy or he'll turn into Earl jr. He told me in 2 years he will either sell all, or he has plans for a BMX Museum.

Anyway, if I can get the complete sets at 10 for $260 I would sell them for $27 each plus $3 ship and handle for a grand total of $30. Only 2 people e-mailed me with interest and I would need to sell 5 more sets to make this work so anyone interested e-mail @ pquinnbmx@jump.net They are red white and blue on clear stock. He's really lost his mind lately since people have been calling him. That Prostar was going for $800 4 years ago, but the very next time I called him it went up to $1000. I have a broken one and need to do a neat job of removing it. Does anyone have a color photo of red JMC Darrell Young? Better yet, a broken frame I could use to match the paint color? Message:
I deal with chrome plating on a daily basis. The biggest charge/problems with plating is the prep work and the drainage. Metal is polished before plating and if the part is technical, like a frame, it's expensive. Also, if the frame has bad drain hol placing it's even more expensive. Chrome platers have to avoid mixing the tank contents while going from tank to tank. Even a frame that has no holes can be a problem. If it has any cracks or small pin holes it can take on chemicals that are acidic. Most frames-if they will do it would be around $200 plus. Remember that most "70's frames did not get polished before nickel plating so it's a waste to pay for it, and the frame might look too shiny afterwards.

First of all, thanks for the public thank you's and the appreciation for the Roost shirts. While I'd love to take credit for them, I merely put the pieces together...Bill Sympson came up with the excellent logo, and the other suggestions for them came from within the group as well. Again, some information about Roost for those that are interested. Roost stands for Revival of Old School Technology. We are a group of guys (no girls yet) spanning the globe (well, country) from New Jersey to Arizona. At first it was going to be just guys from the midwest that would get together once in awhile, but through the magic of the internet, people from far away wanted to be kept in the loop as well. Right now we are just planning our midwest get together for March 6th in Elkhorn, WI at Walworth County BMX. We'll have 8 or 10 people hopefully with some vintage BMX bikes and other old school stuff to hold our own mini-swap meet at a motel after the race on Saturday night. Locals from the track have expressed interest in attending the swap meet as well, so there should be a fairly good turnout. I will have directions to the track online shortly at http://www.spacestar.net/users/pdsmith/roostpage.htm with the help of Paul Smith. If you would like any information on Roost, or would like to be involved, please email me at Roost@racingmail.com Thanks! Jason L

On the subject of chrome the tip on the Harley shop is right on. I know, I work at one! Most shops send a bunch of stuff out to be chromed weekly. If you can get friendly with some of the guys you can sometimes get a good deal. Prices change regionally as well. Dave is the master restorer and in his neck of the woods two bills is the going rate but in NorCal you should be able to get a frame chromed for around $100. As Dave mentioned the price goes up with the amount of polishing. Getting friendly with the cats at the chrome shop doesn't hurt either. Working around those chemicals everyday is not exactly a dream job so after your first frame gets dipped maybe drop off a 12 pack for the guys. A friendly gesture like that goes a long way, remember chrome jobs are usually priced per job not a flat rate. Shop around if you have more than one shop in town however if you get quoted a good price go for it. The price could change by the time you come back around, remember all those fumes. Another good idea is if you have a couple friends that need some frames chromed you may get a price break for a multiple piece job. Happy chroming! DAN

Jason has put alot of effort into coordinating Roost information and keeping us all informed. Right from the beginning when Roost was formed, information was posted right here on menotomy. Its all archived kids. Months ago we started planning an event anyone could attend, and that is now right around the corner. WE decided to have jerseys printed and many people submitted ideas. I for one certainly appreciate Jasons effort in making this happen. Based on the poor english and tasteless content I have to say the person who posted that is truly a moron. Jason, I apologize for the immaturity of this person. Please dont let this reflect the character of the rest of us among Roost or Menotomy. Doug L.

My only regret is that I'm unable to make it to elkhorn to see everyone wearing them!(Paul - bring a camera, I wanna see pictures!) As far as "not being good enough for the group", many times the web address for Paul's ROOST page has been posted for more info. It's not just a MidWest gathering, it's a group of BMXers who enjoy & appriciate the history of our sport. I'm sure it's possible to get more shirts made, I doubt it was a one time deal. I think however that before we put Roost in mags and things like that, we better have a little more substance to it other than a group of guys meeting for a swap meet in Elkhorn, WI. Know what I mean? Kevin and I have been batting around the idea of a quarterly newsletter possibly...with the members of the group able to place classifieds or list their inventory that is up for trade/sale. I have no ideas how it would work logistically just yet, but it's just a thought. Please keep coming up with ideas, this is great to see people intersted.

I guess with the roost thing we need to be a grassroots type organization and let it grow. I totally believe this could become something big. Just look at the vintage racing classes in motocross. It seemed like it popped up overnight, but it probably took awhile to get big. And yes, vintage moto-x is a big thing in some parts of this country. The thing about the guy who was bashing Jason.. The problem i had with it was someone that couldn't type was just ranting about something and telling us nothing. Does that make sense? I imagine everyone here has a few enemies out there. Let's be civilized, that's all i'm saying. By the way, Scott Janssens is a great guy to trade with. I just completed a deal and was very happy with the whole transaction. Brian most pros don't use a conventional chain. You need to go to any automotive store and ask for 110 links of Impala drivetrain. Those bouncing cars seem to use it, and it works great. As far as tires go I recomend the Odyssey Barefoot for superb traction.

Actually Paul, I have been in contact with Mike since this whole thing started, and did in fact (for the second time) tell him that he was still welcome to join us...unfortunately he declined the invitation. I will say this, and then I would appreciate it if there were no further posts about the subject as it just wastes space. Don't get me wrong, I am truly flattered by the support of you all, but this really isn't the place for it. Mike and I had a go around that didn't involve any deals, and it didn't technically involve Roost other than he happend to be in the group and then inadvertantly got left off the mailing list at about the same time some pretty major misunderstandings were going on with me regarding him in a totally non-bmx related way. He probably has a reason to be upset over that part, but he feels he was kicked out of Roost because of it...and that simply isn't the case, it's just a weird coincidence that my email blew up with the entire mailing list one day and I had to replace the group mailing list with a formerly printed one which apparently was printed before he joined the group, so I can see why he would think that was the reason. Since then, and even before this I have apologized for my misunderstanding with him, and have made it apparent that he was welcome in Roost. He has declined on both occasions. I'm sure he's a good guy...just a little unforgiving I guess. Now let's let this be the last post on the subject...okay? Thanks Gents...

On the trade subject I do now have two Reynolds Quads for trade or sale please get in touch trades get first shot but I could use a little bread ( even though I don't have to spend it on a 75 Redline#@#$#@!)DAN P.S I'm sorry to see Mitch go he seemed like a righteous guy. I have traded with Mitch numerous times and always had excellent results. I hope that he will change his mind, keep his stuff, and just take a break rather than give up BMX collecting. Yet, if anyone wants to get his stuff - feel confident that he will give you an excellent deal like he has always given to me. Like most BMXers, once it is in the blood, you cannot really ever leave. As for my comments on EBAY, I recently picked up a Stroker for a good friend, and was basically shortchanged. The seller did not advise about the amount of frame rust, nor mention that one of the original owners had his name and addressed scratched into the polished sidewalls of the MX 60 wheels. The front axle cones were axle nuts and unless I wanted to run front axle extenders and freestyle the axle was way too long on each side, like if I were Craterface in the movie "Grease". When I posted feedback, the seller then posted feedback on me - advising that I should have given him the chance to make it right. Strange, what was he going to do - reverse permanent damage? Anyways - the bottom line is that be careful when buying anything used - via EBAY or through Menotomy or any other non tangible resources.

Well, Roost get together number one is in the history books and I think it was a success. We had a number of Roost members on hand and many people stopping buy checking out all of the stuff the guys brought for the swap meet. Numerous complete bikes on display and much interest from the locals at the track. A special thanks to the Track Director at Walworth County BMX in Elkhorn WI (Jake Karau) for allowing us to set up camp in a corner of the building usually reserved for pitting and staging. I'm sure everybody has their favorite part of the day, but mine was watching the little kids look at the stuff and say something like "Oakley used to make grips?!" After the events at the track, most of us hightailed it over to a local Burger King and ate and talked for the good portion of an hour...great to hear everybodys thoughts on racing and the industry back in the day. I for one can't wait for the next one (whenever and wherever that may be). Thanks guys for coming, and thanks to those that couldn't be there physically but were in spirit. Kevin took the pictures and hopefully we can have those online at the Roost website by the end of the week. Jason L

Yes I remember the Bandito. I used to race one during the 87 season. I had it for about 4 months before I broke it. It buckled under the headtube. Was a real shame, didn't even have barely any scratches on it. I believe they were made by CW. And even though it had double drop outs you could only realistically use one of the sets. The other set was to kooky. Had a little Yosemite Sam like guy on the headtube with 2 guns. The letters on the fork and downtube were a sorta Shogun style script. Also weren't they known for their step bars? Also doubtful you will ever find one for cheap!

I just picked up an old freestyle video from GT. It's called GT Demo Tape. Dated from 1987. Pretty good tape but not really my cup of tea. So if some freestyle fanatic wants it please get in touch. It features Brian Scura, Dave Voelker, Josh White, Martin Aparijo,Eddie Fiola (at Pipeline, a very cool old skatepark)and a few more guys doing street and vert. On a seperate note would BenJoy get in touch with me, I'm having trouble reaching you by email.DAN

Ya know, I used the end caps from some old dx's on a pair of S&M pedals...I would think that it would work the other way around. Not a perfect fit, but close enough. THe question is this: when did they start making 48 spoke wheels? Curious about the history on that. Also, who made them first? Thanks.

peregrine 48's were out in '87. Not sure about Redline, but Peregrine was he first big company that i remember making 48's. I know someone that had a custom wheel set made by a local bike shop owner that were 48 spoke rims and that was back around '83. He also made some other sets that were not normal for their day, so i am sure there were more people out there ridin' around on 48's before they caught the eye of bigger companies. my freind still has his, they are quite thrashed, but still very cool.

Hey everybody, I have had some great response on my posting for the Peregrine cranks and Hutch clamps, etc. I had it on my schedule to visit the warehouse where this stuff is stored this week, with the idea of getting them to take your mail orders directly with credit card. I got sidetracked with work and will therefore have to do that this week. Sorry for the delay. About the 48s---Peregrine introduced the first commercial 48s and Redline was the first company to offer them as standard on their bikes, with mags as an option. This quickly became the general practice. If you wanted 48s before they came out (and some people did), it wasn't tough---take a 48-spoke heavy-duty tandem hub and drill a new series of spoke holes into a ukai rim. That's where Peregrine got the idea--JB
