AGE / VALUE:   Some progress on DBS information posted by: Jerry Cleveland on 4/30/2010 at 11:28:49 AM
Well, I finally located the DBS Serial Number list at www.student.uit.no/aissm/dbsaar.html. My serial number (53133 SA) doesn't fit easily into any year of production. I guess it is possible that DBS kept a separate list for government contract work, assuming that my bicycle is, in fact, a DBS. Bottom line: I still need help identifying my Finnish Army bicycle. Thanks!

AGE / VALUE:   DBS Serial Number list? posted by: Jerry Cleveland on 4/29/2010 at 1:22:35 PM
My unmarked Finnish Army bicycle appears to have a DBS chain ring (www.bikecult.com/works/chainwheel.html). I have seen references to a DBS Serial Number list but have been unable to locate it. My frame SN is 53133 SA, the last letters standing for Suomen Armeija or Finnish Army. Is it likely that this is a Norwegian DBS built for Finland? The rear hub, a single speed Sachs Torpedo coaster brake, is stamped 36S, with the S apparently indicating 1974 manufacture. Any and all information appreciated!

I have my mom's old bike and am trying to identify it. SN B47552 56. Can't read the two middle numbers. I was told either a Roadmaster or Columbia, but not sure. Also told they got it in 1955. Can't really find an exact picture to identify. So what do I need to do. Looking to sell it for her. My dad painted it about 40 years ago. Needs new tires and you could ride it. Very good shape.

I agree that a picture is worth a thousand words. I can say with confidence that there is no doubt in my mind that it is a hawthorne blue and white girls cruser 1938. The question is the the head badge that say TOPS MFG FOR TRU TESTING MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING CO CHIGO ILL. I WILL POST A PICTURE ASAP. IM SURE THAT ALL WILL AGREE THAT IT IS A HAWTHORNE . 1938 WAS A YEAR THAT HAD A LOT OF CHANGES TO TIRES. GOODYEAR TESTED 4 TIRES THAT HAD THE NEW RAYON CORD IN IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. THEY ALSO TESTED TIRES WITH BLACK ADDED TO THE RUBBER AND SOMTHING ELSE TO MAKE THEM LAST OR MORE DURABLE.THE TEST TIRES WERE ON THE 26 INCH BALOONS G-3 WITCH ARE STILL ON THE BIKE NOW AND IN GOOD CONDITION! THERE WAS ALSO A PROBLEM WITH ALERGIC REACTIONS TO THE RUBBER PRIMARALY FROM THE WORKERS AT THE GOOODYEAR PLANT. I FOUND SOME OTHER INFO THAT LEADS ME TO BELEIF THAT THIS WAS A TEST BIKE , I JUST CANT FIND THE SMOKIN GUN WHITCH IS TOPS MFG MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING CO CHIGO ILL 1938. IvE SEARCHED AND SEARCHED NOT ONE PERSON SO FAR EVER HEARD OF TOPS MFG TRU-TESTIN ETC... NOW IT HAS BECOME MY MISSION TO FIGURE OUT THIS MYSTERY . ANY HELP,.... BULER, BULER.......BULER..........

I repeat. Hawthorne is not a manufacturer. Your Tops may have been manufactured by the same company. If your bike was a Hawthorne the badge would say manufactured for Montgomery Wards. Please explain how you settled on 1938. Also please give your definition of the word cruiser- we're taking a poll.
I hope the pictures are up soon.

her are the pictures of the tops bike. I realize that the badge is hard to read from the weak photo. The desription of the badge is in the previous messages from me WORD FOR WORD AS IT APPEARS. sorry it took so long to post them. Now what is up with TOPS MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING CHICAGO ILL 1938. Like I said it is identical in every way to the hawthorn 1938 girls bike photographs I found on the web, pre war. Many others are similar in many ways like the elgin and silver streak monarch. As far as i know nobody can fully explain this bike... buler........buler..............buler.......

MISC:   Help in I.D. Of two Bikes.Year,Make Model? posted by: Brad on 4/14/2010 at 4:50:14 AM
I have two old bikes. I am trying to determine year, make, and model of them. Any help would be Great! I am wanting to restore one, and sell the other for parts.
One is a J.C. Higgens girls bike. The model is on the bar that the seat is mounted on. It is almost illegible. I can make out three letters. The first is the hardest to read. But I think it is OGI? It could be CGI. It is about 26"
One is a girls, all chrome bike with a spring front end. It is about 26" as well. It has a plastic hub bezel over the right side of the main sprocket. It has four small reflectors on each side of the pedals. It is a single speed bike with the only markings on the bike are on the rear hub and brake bar. It says Komet Super,F.& S. G. The bikes serial # is 50246901075997. It has a spring seat much, if not exactly, like a 1960 (and other years) Western Flyer. It also has a flat carrier over the rear tire. It looks like it might have had a taillight. Any help? Thanx,Brad

Brad, some pictures would help. The JC Higgins might easily be a Murray, but the model may only appear in catalogs. Your second bike could also be any of the Murray-built brands, of which Western Flyer is one. Sears is another. The bezel on the crankset sounds like Spaceliner/Flightliner to me, but I haven't seen it. The Komet hub was used by many makers for many years. The letters stand for Fichtel and Sachs Co.
Send me a picture if you like.

Brad has a women's Flightliner-style middleweight without identifying marks. My Flightliner said Sears on the tank and Flightliner on the chainguard; his tank is missing, and the chainguard doesn't seem to say anything at all.
His JC Higgins is a three-speed with the J C HIGGINS going around the chainwheel. I guessed it was Austrian, Steyr Daimler Puch, but wondered if anyone knows the timeline or provenance of the Higgins chainwheel. Brad, you may want to ask the Roadster group about this. They know a lot more than we do here, I think...

AGE / VALUE:   vintage huffy year??? posted by: Josh on 4/13/2010 at 8:26:53 PM
I just recently found a green beach cruiser style huffy bike. I have searched everywhere on it for numbers and could only find 3C018188, on the rear frame of the bike. I have vigorously searched for some answers on this and am looking for the model and maybe a year. Over the cover on the chain it says express. It is relatively light in weight and stands about 42" tall and the wheels are 26 1/4 x 25 3/4. If anyone one has any info on this bike I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day!!!!

Josh, your original post is confusing. You've already got the model ('Express'), right? Please start by checking both hubs for any identifying marks. Also clarify the wheel size; your original post makes it sound like they're square. What can you read from the tires?
What makes you say vintage? Is it marked with a country of origin? Huffy has been an import badge for 25 years or more.
Where is the Huffy ID? Does it have a badge, or a decal on the head tube?
Take some pictures, too, please. You can email me one if you want.

Find the serial number and check it against the list found on this site. That will tell you the year. Looks like a nice, middle of the road model, probably early '60's. Good luck.

I have a couple of those, but not in as nice a shape as yours. I believe they were made by Huffman for the Western Auto Stores. I'm guessing they are from the late 1940's or early 1950's. Most bikes went from 2.125 width tires to 1.75 about 1955.

FOR SALE:   1963 Columbia Thunderbolt (girls) posted by: Brad in Greenacres, FL on 3/24/2010 at 11:30:42 AM
I just picked up an old 1963 Columbia Thunderbolt (S/N # M598399) from a CraigsList ad here locally in South Florida. It appears to be pretty much all original. It has a blue/white Messinger seat, Mattatuck coaster brake hub, Front - Kelly Springfield Explorer W/W tire (26 x 1.75), the rear tire is a Sears Allstate Safety tread #50200 B/W (26 x 1.75) It was a deep auqa blue when new. It looks like someone painted it with some beige house paint years ago. It has a battery frame tank and a dual headlight up front. Some sort of ornament is attached to the front fender. It has all the hardware that came with it as can be seen from the pictures. I'm probably going to sell it or part it out depending on what sort of responses I get. If anyone is interested please contact me.

Hi!

So I just came across your post. I also just bought a '63 Thunderbolt and suspect we have the same color. Thing is, mine came with an original all white seat, and I kind of had my heart seat on the blue and white seat. Are you still selling pieces of the bike, and do you still have the seat? The Flickr photos weren't there, just thought I'd check. Thanks!
