AGE / VALUE:   Columbia Thunderbolt posted by: D~s bikes on 12/22/2007 at 11:58:10 PM
We picked up a lot of really neat vintage bikes dating from 1931 to 1967 models ranging from Hawthorne's to basic Sears brand but all in great ridable shape. With this lot we received a 24" Columbia Thunderbolt, I did some searching online only to not find anything referring to this model of Columbia. I am unsure of the year the serial # (K062573, found by the left rear drop out) makes it one of two years that I could decipher, either a 1946 or a 1961, how do I determine which year it is? It does have the tank with the battery powered horn in it which still works. Also how unusual is this bicycle? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply I only found 2 pictures of a similar brand it they look very different. It has a neat headbadge that is open, no headlights in the tank, intact decals on one side. From the history I got from the owner it is all original right down to the tires.

I was thinking about that time myself, but my headbadge is different. It is the square flat (just painted on graphics)one. Also my brake arm says Elgin. Could a Higgins have a Elgin brake arm? Does anyone when they started using the smaller square headbadge. I have posted a picture of it.

BALLOON:   Looking for maker of this Cleveland bike posted by: Djunkman on 12/15/2007 at 6:58:40 PM
Got this one with no history. Badge says "Halle Bros. Cleveland, Ohio" with "Falcon". Halle was a Cleve. deptmartment store long gone after 1982. Bike seems to be around mid 1930's and has a sweetheart skip sprocket like a Schwinn but nothing else looks Schwinn. First thought Cleve. Welding with head light but tank kinda looks like Colson (Elyria, OH)? Plans are to keep original paint and restore mechanical parts only. Please advise if anyone is familiar with this bike and any ideas of value? Thanks

It's a 1939/40 Monark bike. Not a Monark sprocket though. Nice bike. Marc

Thanks for the info. I never talked to the elderly Guy I got the bike from (his kids just dumped his collection) but he did have some later model Monark parts, I never figured that was his brand. I sure appreciate advice and should make part hunting easier. Thanks, Junkman

Are you sure thats a Schwinn? I have a few Cleveland Welding Company bikes (Roadmaster's & Hawthorne's) and a couple have very similar frames, sprocket and guard seem hawthorne also. Check out www.nostalgic.net for some great photo referances.

The seat has a schwinn name, but could have been added, and I thought the chain guard looked like a schwinn but no logo. I am not sure what make, I'll check photo gallery again.
Thanks
GaryD.

IMO the seat and handlebars are much later than the frame. Chainwheel looks Elgin or Iver Johnson; frame ca. 1935.

I've run across Elgin bikes with ND rear hubs and front hubs, finned front and rear, and combinations of both. I think they just used whatever was available.
