AGE / VALUE:   model type / value of JC Higgins? posted by: John on 2/26/2007 at 1:19:27 AM
Does anyone know what model this JC Higgins is? It has no decals ro headbadge on the frame and there are holes in the steering tube - I'm assuming for attaching a tank. I would like to get the right accessories for it (tank, rack etc) but I have no idea what model it is.

Also, any ideas about its value?

Look in the picture database to determine the model.
The price guide here lists over 20 JC Higgins bicycles

Thanks, already checked both databases. None of the JC Higgins listed have the same frame / chaingaurd as mine.

So, still trying to figure it out....

That is a pre-war bike (older than 1940).
Look in the picture database to determine model.

That is a POST war bike. Schwinn bicycles made before WWII had rear facing drop outs. Skip tooth chain does not mean pre war, in fact they were still producing bikes with skip tooth chain in the early 1950's.

What's a rear facing drop out?
by: 24.46.132.71

RE:RE:AGE / VALUE:   Vintage Schwinn posted by Gordon on 2/26/2007 at 7:36:55 PM
The dropout is the slot in the frame where the rear axle goes. On Schwinns built before WWII the slots faced the rear. On those built after WWII they face forward.

Any idea what i might ask for this unrestored in present condition? No rust bust just surface spots on rims and handlebars. Tires might need tubes. Thanks

10/20/1949. Its as i suspected a 1950 model. I could use the fenders, chaingaurd and wheels.

I just saw a 1940 Schwinn Pioneer and my bike is the spitting image. Do you have a picture that you can send me of that 1950 Schwinn?

Hello all you biking enthusiasts. I just picked up an old bike and I am at loss as year and model. I'm guessing 1939 or 1949. It's a Schwhinn-#F283507. Thanks any and all for help.

I'm guessing that you had an Evans Interceptor 500 from the late 50's. It was a 26" middleweight, cantilever frame, with the Car-Flite painted fenders, chrome rims with whitewall tires, the Flitestream chainguard, a chrome ball headlight and the chrome front carrier. It also had the Bendix 2-speed rear hub. You don't see them very often, so you'll have to keep an eye on Ebay or attend some of the bigger bike shows. In late April, there will be the Memory Lane and Ann Arbor shows, in northern Ohio and Michigan. Good luck in your search!

I was steered to www.bikepartsusa.com by a lad on another bike site. They have all sorts of the old obscure tire sizes. Hopefully they have what you need. I found my tires(650B) there. Good luck in your quest.

I bought a schwinn spitfire 5 from a retired couple. They got too old to walk, so they sold me this old schwinn. It's a neat old bike in super shape. It's black and white(original colors)I gave $40 for it and do not know what it's worth. It looks like motorcycle hubs on it. Anyone have a clue?

Marcelo,as your bike starts with an I--it's likely an early post war frame---maybe 1946?
Some guys that know this stuff have put together this link to help I.D. pre 1948 schwinn frames
