The 1st letter in the serial# stands for the month; they span from 'A' to 'M' with no usage of 'I' for avoiding confusion to number '1'.

BALLOON:Fleetwing bicycle posted by: mike messerli on 7/23/2006 at 6:28:51 PM
Does anyone have any information on a bicycle made by fleetwing? The brass badge on the front fork tube has a wheel with wings as well as the name Fleet Wing and what appears to be an 'A' in a circle on the bottom right corner. It has the balloon tires (2.25, 'The Silver Star Tire' on the sidewall), and a tank with horn, the color of this bike is black with what appears to be a feather design on the fenders (white outlined in red. The rear wheel has an adjuster on each side for alignment and chain tension (I'm assuming), and the fender brackets have an arch not straight like most 50's bikes.I'm guessing the 40's??

Hey I have a Fleetwing Speedster thatwas given to my by my dad its 35years old. Its in mint condition no rust hect all original parts except for the Rear wheal which got warped about 10 years ago and new tires and inner tubes. I've upgraded the brake pads and ride atleast 40-120km a week on it and it rides nice. Not as fast as other bikes on the street but it sure turns heads when other riders see it. It even has all the original paint with no scratches.

It has value as a collectible bike and as a good commuter bike.
It was made in England.
Check the 3 Price Guides at the top of any page here on OldRoads.com.
Also, you might get more info if you post this under the English Roadster topic. There are some 3-speed experts over there.

I have a 1954 Schwinn Black Phantom that is in very good original shape. I was wondering what are the correct pedals for my bike. Are they suppose to be the Schwinn AS pedals or perhaps a Torrington #10? Did all phantoms have AS pedals on them with the deluxe rubber blocks?

A good way to get a ballpark figure other than getting a professional appraisal is to check on e-bay. Just type in
Schwinn bicycles and look for a simular bike. Old girls bikes are generally in better shape cuz girls weren't as hard on them as boys.

cycle on!

BALLOON:Schwinn - The World? posted by: Mike Dwyer on 7/18/2006 at 3:58:47 PM
Hi,

A friend of mine won this bicycle at a raffle. It was represented as an original Schwinn "The World" model from around 1949. It has a frame number of F044538 as near as I can tell from the photo I took. Indicates a 1949 model?

Would you be so kind as to let me know who to get in touch with concerning this bicycle? Authenticity and value. I have not been too lucky gathering much information so far.

I can send a picture via e-mail. Let me know your connection speed and I'll size it accordingly.

He wants to sell it.

Thank you for your time,

Mike Dwyer
