AGE / VALUE:   Peugeot CPX-50 posted by: D.C. Wilson on 4/4/2005 at 2:52:03 AM
Can anybody tell me about this bike. At first glance, it looks like a little kiddie bike. But it has a Polygon stem, a tough little frame (L1011 tubing sticker on seat tube), Viscount seat, studly little fork, KK hubs, and rose annodized pedals. Color is white. Chrome chain guard. CPX-50 is on the seat stays. Never knew Peugeot was into this sort of thing. One of the cutest little hoppers I've seen. It certainly seems a cut above the average kiddie bike. No "made in ....." sticker anywhere. would seem to date to early or mid 80s. Help.

When I was a kid, we moved from the US to Europe, where I lived for 7 years. When we got Brussels, Belgium, my parents bought me a new bike. The bike store where we purchased it sold the entire line of Peugeot CPX bikes. I'll tell you all that I can remember.

The bike you describe is the Peugeot CPX 150. Perhaps the "1" got rubbed off the seat, or maybe the seat was replaced. The original seat of the CPX 150 was red, in an attempt to match the color of the pedals and the tires, which were also red.

The Peugeot CPX lineup went something like this:
CPX 100 -- entry level, came in red and blue frames, metal spoke wheels.
CPX 150 -- available in white frame only, with red tires, metal spoked wheels
CPX 250 (the bike I owned) -- available in white frame only, with blue 10 spoke fiberglass mag wheels, anondized blue aluminum handlebars with goosemeck. Yellow writing on the bike said Peugeot CPX 250. Blue hnadlebars with black foam grips. Black pedals. Blue tires...As I recall, the front tire was slightly wider than the bakc tire...The bike had only one handbrake (on the rear tire)
There was also a CPX 350 and 450...I don't remember what these looked like, as they were way out of my price range.

Back in 1982, the prices for these bikes were as follows:
CPX 100 -- 5000 Belgian Francs, around $100
CPX 150 -- 8500 Belgian Francs, around $175
CPX 250 -- 12,000 Belgian Francs, around $240
CPX 350 and 450, unknown.

Hello,

I must ad, that I bought a CPX 100 when I was 9 years old (in France) for 720 francs (110 €) and it was all black.

It was the third one in my town.

The two others where grey/chrome fork and black/chrome fork.

After mine they where red/chrome fork.

I broke the frame at the age of 12 and bought a blue mongoose F1 (yellow tires) but thats an other story...

I purchased a CPX-100 in sixth grade from Town & Country Cyclery in Northville, Michigan. This would have been spring 1980 if memory serves me coorect. It had a black frame and all gold anodized accesories/parts including cranks, sprockets, rims and spokes and handle bars along with gold lettering and gold on black padding. One speed.

I distinctly recall it being about the same weight but more manueverable than my frinds Mongooses (Mongeese?) and Redlines. Something about the gearing on the one speed and the crank length made it have better tan average acceleration. A lot of BMX back then had tiny frames to clear the longer cranks. Which made them somewhat unstable as the center of gravity was higher. The CPX-100 just felt right. The blend between sprocket ratio, crank length, center of gravity and seating position made it perfect for racing, and jumps focused on length, height and duration. It was not the bike for stunt jumping, but it was clearly the class of the field in my circle of friends when it came to racing around the couple tracks in the area. Fast and very stable.

The only draw back were the head set stripped too easily and was replaced several times as were the real wheel asjustment nuts. I finally and reluctantly moved to a chrome Mongoose head. I really wnated to keep it original but $40 for head sets was a weeks wages on the paper route.
I think I paid around $135 to $145 for mine in 1980.

Hello, I just picked up a Peugeout BMX code CPX3HXXX on the bottom bracket that was originally black. I'm trying to figure out what year it is. The "3" between the letter might indicate 1983 or CPX 350 model, but I'm not sure? Does anyone have one with a similar code on the bottom bracket that knows what model/year it is?

Any help is much appreciated,
RP

I bought a CPX 100 in early 1979 in Bethel CT USA, there were two models at the bike shop: CPX 100 and CPX 500, the 100 was about $100 so I went for that, I put Skyway Tuff's on it and started racing for the 79 season, the frame cracked by the seat post after a few months so I got a Mongoos frame and fork set.

Blue Max bikes were NOT made by raleigh. they were made by BMX Products, the same company that made the famous mongoose bikes of the 70's and 80's, (they also made the Roger DeCoster, Racer-X, Mototrac, Jag, and a few of the early 76-77 Raleigh R-10 frames). Blue Max bikes were sold in military PX's, and other venues on military bases between 77 and 83. they were not sold to civilians in any other way.
