MOTORIZED BICYCLES:   Saginaw Products posted by: Greg on 4/24/2006 at 12:16:50 AM
The guy asking about a Saginaw products motorized bike...I have one. I have been trying to find out anything about it so I will know what I have, who sold them and their value. Its a blast to ride and is 100% original right down to the push-button battery powered horn in the metal can between your legs and fender lite!

MOTORIZED BICYCLES:   Help with this old bike please posted by: christy on 4/23/2006 at 6:02:52 PM
I got this old bike last week and can not find who made it.
I was told it looks like an old American made BMX(well there are alot of makers of them)
serial number starts with 5 and has 7 all together 1 of the 7 is a letter(number is by back wheel on frame).fenders i think are mudguard.
seat reads MX TROXEL and is black in GREAT Shape.
The sticker on the seat bar reads AIM in small print and has a big black S under it.
Guage looks like a classic old schwin stylehas SEARS on it.
It is mens bike frame shape, closest i have found to it so far is the YAMAHA 1970???A model maybe??
Handel bars look like maybe GHP star bars or BMX freestyle(I realy have no idea).
If you think you can tell me anything please do so..
I will send pics if you want to see it.

I just got myself an amf moped. Has to be late 70s. Anyone know how to find out the year, I can't seem to find it. I've got little experience with engines, but this engine looks fairly clean. Willing to sell the entire moped also, doesn't start, don't know if it will, but numerous unattached wires definetly are a problem at the moment. Just post here again if you want to get a hold of me.

I just got out AMF moped running this last weekend. Found that if you don't hookup ANY wires to the engine then the spark plug will still fire. I also found that if you turn the engine with an electric drill motor that this is NOT fast enough to make a spark- I mounted the motor to the bike, wired the plug onto the top of the engine to watch it and peddled about 5 mph and it sparked fine, this turns it pretty fast.

Aaron: Regarding the year of your AMF moped; there originally was a sticker on the front of the frame where the fork mounts that says :manufactured by AMF, Olney Illinois, and a date. Mine says 3/78. The sticker also had the bike serial number. If the sticker isn't there, I don't know what else to suggest. Amybody know where to get a CDI ignition module for one of these things?

I picked up a 1978 AMF Roadmaster yesterday, and cannot get it running. I replaced the sparkplug and gasket. The common problem seems to be the spark plug wire. I know the generator works, as it does supply the headlight with electricity. How do I test the spark plug wire? If that is not the problem, then narrowing it down, it must be the carb....what work have you guys found to be the solutions to get the thing running?

Hit me back, yo.

well in my case a defective coil was the issue which called for complete replacement of the ignition module dont try to use a drill to test it engine needs to be turning ground speed approx 5mph pushed with the spark plug out for testing module is on ebay for $47 one way to test is unhook all wires from the module engage the motor and push it if you dont get a bright blue spark most likely the module is defective can be verified by testing windings with ohm meter one or the other will be bad mine had intermittent spark almost enough to run but not enough to keep it running

Nate, That engine is also known as the Tanaka Bike Bug. Mike Schneider is the expert around here on the subject. He must be on vacation. Information about Mike and Tanaka at: http://bikerodnkustom3.homestead.com/tanaka.html

You can probably find a running one on eBay for a reasonable price. A non-running one for $20 may be a bargain, but it might not be, if it needs an expensive rebuild.
by: 66.108.82.196

RE:AGE / VALUE:   Sear bike motor posted by Mike Schneider on 4/30/2006 at 1:05:17 AM
Nate:

Depends on condition of it and what you want to do. $20 for an engine of any type if it is semi good condition is a deal. You may have to put money into it to get it running. If you don't want it - let me know about it.

Below is Litertaure & Parts for that engine. I am a Tanaka Parts Distributor na d can help you put that engine together.

Literature & Parts

These little bike engines are really a HOOT. I have two mounted on mountain bikes and six on cruisers. They are such fun and real head turners. They are simple to work on but were designed by Japanese engineers so sometimes the why that way is interesting.

I remember seeing them in Popular Science as a 12-year boy - dreaming about having one. Three years ago I found one at a garage sale and rebuilt it - took me about three months - no manual, parts lists or diagram - just trail and error.

I finally found a man in New Jersey who had one who had a manual and experience rebuilding these engines. We became and still are long distance friends. Once I got that engine running and rode it - I was that 12 year boy again - What a Blessing.

I have since rebuilt eight engines and in the process of networking I have gathered an extensive amount of literature and experience plus figured out how to built or find parts that are better than original and cost less.

Parts we have developed are:

· Drive Roller Wheel (62mm - Faster, less wear, less expensive than original replacement)
· Safety Gas Tank Cap
· Fuel Pump Kit
· Muffler to Submuffler extension hose
· Mounting Kit for New Model Bike (5 ˝” forks versus older 3 ˝” forks)

THE ABOVE MENTIONED LITERATURE.

PARTS ARE NOT SOLD UNLESS CLIENT HAS A SET OF
THE ABOVE MENTIONED LITERATURE.

Drive Wheel $20.00

The Drive Wheel is another item that has been improved on design. The rubber of the drive hub simply deteriorates with age and wear. We have put a neoprene high-speed roller skate wheel (62 mm) over the aluminum drive hub. It wears less, vibrates the engines less and bike goes slightly faster per revolution. This drive hub wheel sells for $20.00 ready to mount over your existing aluminum hub.

Gas Tank Cap $10.00

The Safety Gas Tank Cap sells for $10.00 and has a safety-retaining ring that prevents loss. The ring slips over the gas tank neck and stays in place when the cap is removed to add gasoline. An original gas tank cap that does not have the safety ring can be bought from Tanaka for $15.00 plus $4.95 for shipping and handling.

Fuel Pump Kit $12.00

The pump gasket, diagraphm, and free valve with instructions and hints to make this replacement of parts go correctly (Parts being misaligned – pump will not function) with minimum time and lost of small pieces. These instructions are in addition the owner’s manual and workshop manual.

Foot Valve Kit $15.00

This kit is a fuel filter and one way check valve combination mounted in the gas tank suction line that keeps the fuel pump primed.

Muffler to Sub Muffler Extension Hose $20.00

We have researched and experimented with various arrangements and have developed a wire reinforced high temperature hose that with stand the high temperatures developed by the engine. The current hoses we are selling have lasted for two years.

In ordering this hose it is important for us to know the size hose you need. The models have changed over the years and this hose size has increased on later models.

This part is no longer available for Tanaka.

Mounting System $15.00 - (5 1/2” forks – Newer Model Mountain Bikes & Cruisers)

The bikes made when these engines were made had 3 ˝” wide forks – newer mid 1980s mountain bike and cruisers have a 5 ˝” wide fork.

The Kit comes with the hardware and assembly directions to spread the mounting bracket apart to be able to mount the engines on bikes with wider forks than bikes had when these engines were built.

Other Parts

Some original manufacturer parts are available from Tanaka and Sears - no manuals though. My literature is from people like you and some from old but new in the box engines I have purchased. Also a lot of parts can be obtained form lawn mower and motorcycle shops.

I have large odd lot large parts from engines that were in various stages of repair from a Sears Serviceman Estate. Tell me what you need from the parts list and we will see if we have one or can built some.

Sears and ACE Hardware are good sources for gasoline hoses, air filter and metric nuts and bolts.

Replace the original transmission grease with Lithium base grease - wasn't available when these engines were made. It lubricates better and you get a little more power to the wheel.

Synthetic 2-stroke oil (Bel Ray available form most motorcycle shops for racing 2 cycle motorcycles) in the gasoline - it lubricates better, engine runs faster, smoother and does not have carbon build up in the muffler.

Anyway, I can help you on rebuilding and mounting if you have specific questions after your review the information.

The literature I can copy and mail to you for $25.00 in the US. Send a check to - Don't waste money on a money order:

I finally got around to repairing the friction roller wheel for $2 on a Free Spirit motor. I must also admit, I got the idea from a guy at a Bicycle show.

First, I removed the roller from the motor, and wire wheeled all of the plastic crap that breaks off. I found radiator hose that fit on the thing snug and used some 3 minute Loc-tite epoxy from Wal-Mart. After the first one was dry, I installed a larger second piece of radiator hose right over the first. After this dried, I trimmed the ends and reinstalled the thing on the bike. It works very well.

I’ve also figured out that a good working primer bulb on these is critical to getting all of the fuel circulating through the carb or it WILL NEVER START. So if you remove a carb to clean it, lube the black primer bulb with something so it doesn’t crack. When you squeeze it, it sould criculate fuel through the carb.

O.K, this might be a bad idea, but can you put a sidecar on a moped? I bought two engine kits on ebay, put the first one on a pre war Colson. Runs O.K. I was going to build the second one on an old elgin frame. If I made a sidecar would it be too much weight? Has anyone had luck with such a project?

You probably wouldn't want to haul your 300-pound brother-in-law around in one, but there is a long history of sidecars attached to motorized bicycles in the UK and Europe. Our friends at the National Autocycle and Cyclemotor Club (UK) have much information on the subject in their website's archives: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/'pattle/nacc/arcindex.htm
Look under their Sidecar Notes in the archive index.

As in anything to do with unpowered bicycles, light weight is of more importance than it is with motorcycles. But even a small motor helps in hauling the attachment around.

Most people just use them for hauling children and pets.

MOTORIZED BICYCLES:   new Whizzer autoclutch posted by: OtisDriftwood on 1/16/2006 at 3:02:55 AM
I have a new Whizzer NE5 with the new auto clutch. I don't know if it's defective or what but it slips like crazy. The bike doesn't move forward with even full throttle unless you pedal your butt off. I disassembled the clutch mechanism. It was bone dry so oil/grease contamination is ruled out. Is this normal? Is there something, short of converting to manual clutch, I can do to get the centrifugal clutch to grab better?

Some of the early auto clutches were rumored to have problems. I got one for my 2003 Pathfinder II and the instructions said to treat it with care for the first five miles and to be careful to seat the shoes by varying the speed. Haven't tried it but this may be the cause of past failures and your problem may be the result of not following the above. Why they don't include this warning with a new NE5 I don't understand. It is probably repair time if the belts are adjusted properly.

I have the same Whizzer and had the same problem. Just do like the owners manual suggests. Mine would not go at all until I had at least 5 miles on it. The more miles I went the better it got until it worked like I thought it should at about 20 miles. So the easiest way to fix your Whizzer is to ride it on a mostly flat surface at varying speeds for the whole day. It doesnt get any eisier than that.
If you ride it full throtle before the clutch pads wear in and there is subtantial slipping the you will certainly wear them out before they seat properly
