Does anyone know about the fate of the import bike engines in 2006? I got wind that they will stop importing them from China in January. Will we still be able to get parts?

They can no longer be imported and sold unless they pass stringent EPA tests. Parts will still be available for most. The Grubee models will be supported for a time through a parts depot in OK. Simpson indicates that they will be supporting them. They are cheap enough so if you are concerned, buy two the same, one to use and one for parts. Undercurrents indicate an effort to find or develop four cycle models.

I have a 48cc Grubee "Like" Chineese Engine I got on E-bay for $178.00 Shipped. The Guy I bought it from has many sets of parts. I make all my own gaskets...except head gaskets by hand. Cables are standard bike stuff, Throtle cables are avalible online. Bearings are my worry. I have not had a problem in 175 happy miles. It's a shame that "BIG BROTHER" is so worried about about little Poo-Poo motors like these. A LAWN MOWER or a WEED-EATER creates more polution than my bike. Happy riding and write down my E-mail address. E-mail contacts are the best way to skirt the Feds and find parts.
Have a great day!
Denny.

WANTED:KS BIKE MACHINE??????????? posted by: j on 12/6/2005 at 7:14:55 PM
hey, I got this weird thing, its orange and back and reads "KS BIKE MACHINE", its a small 2cycle gas engine with a friction drive setup for bicycles along with a small fuel tank and a seprate tank for the 2cycle oil, it works by something pulling it down onto the bike's back tire, I have a bike I wanna mount it to but here's the thing: I don't have any mounts for it. making a mount for it is no problem but making the peices that pull it up and down are, would anyone possibly have any of this stuff or know where I could find it?
and does anyone know anything about this thing?
thanks, weststreetbikes@hotmail.com

some of the parts that fit the ks machine are from the 400pb blower and the 300 blower these are backpack blowers by echo if you are lucky they might make a ignition module for it but i don/t think so as theres not much room there

parts from echo 400pb backpack blowers and 300 blowers work on the ks bike machine but not all maybe you can find a ignition module to replace the coil its tough cause there is not much room there

Hi j,
I haven't heard from you in a while. The lowrider board is getting less busy by the minute.
What I would do is build something like a "slant parallelogram". That is, something very similar to the cable shifted parts of a deraileur.
So when you release the clutch handle (you could use an old brake lever) the return springs, and weight of the motor combine to press the drive roller against the rear tire.

RE:WANTED:KS BIKE MACHINE??????????? posted by j on 12/13/2005 at 7:25:41 PM
hey...
the thing is I want some kind of lever so I can pedal the bike around with the motor off the tire, then when I get tired or whatever, start the motor up, pull the lever and have it lock down onto the tire...almost like a giant C clamp kinda thing but that would obviously take a very long time compared to a lever...

RE:RE:WANTED:KS BIKE MACHINE??????????? posted by AviationMetalSmith on 12/13/2005 at 10:30:16 PM
I was describing something like that. But it would be more "motorcycle-like" if it had a spring and a cable and you could use it like a clutch. Squeeze the handlebar lever and the roller lifts off from the wheel. Let go and the spring pulls the roller against the wheel.
Yes, it will take time to build. Everything does.
I would get an electric motor and not bother with anything old.
by: 4.78.53.198

RE:WANTED:KS BIKE MACHINE??????????? posted by j on 12/14/2005 at 7:22:15 PM
that sounds as if (unless I'm misunderstanding) I'll have to hold down the brake handle whenever I want to pedal which is not what I'm aiming for...
this is much easyer to build then alot of other stuff I've made (namely my trike....) its just this one issue :)

I've been considering making a couple electric powered things but I still like gas engines partly becuase they give me an excuse to make a tank for the frame :)

I recently bought a Bike Machine new in the box complete with all the parts and tools for $45. at a BoyScout garage sale. I mounted it to a foldable mountain bike I got as a premium from Marlboro cigarettes years ago.

The thing is a complete trip and a gas for this 59 year old guy to ride. I probably does 25 mph, starts from a dead stop without peddeling and will pull gradual hills
also witout assistance. I call it my Hardly Davis.

I have the owners manual and address of the company in Dallas, Tx. that made them. I don't know it they are still in business. I did however get a comment from an admirer that they are real popular in Oregon. I can be reached at ivoryboat@gmail.com I need a gas tank for the model I have.

the pb backpack blower is an old echo make if u can not get the parts u can take the inside reel out and glue it to the plate with marine tex its slow and crude but works u have to rewinde by hand then also if anyone uses both nitro propane and mek the mix must be richer 3/and one half in cold and 3and 3/4 in hot and check always for high heat more so if racing or going up a lot of steep hills it then might need 4 onces of the power plus oil keep looking winter is best time in shops as they are not that busy with landscapers hope this helps u also that spring is very hard to put in if u are not that good yet have the shop do it cause if it gets unraveled it is then very hard to put i know been there

about the starter on the ks if the center post is broken it might not pay to replace the coil spring as it won/t work well it was cast with the body and it is pot metal if it works at all it will be hit or miss u might try to replace it with abrass pipe or steel one from hobby or hardware and thread it on the body if it is the same as the original it should work just hope u can find one from another engine and buy it so check the post first or at least be able to put the pipe in before u order the springs or pay a shop to do it maybe a hobby shop it takes good skill to do it

Oh noooo!!!!!

The sparkplug wire got too close to the engine while it was running along just fine and melted. I tried to fix the wire and tape it but I get no fire. Took it apart and the mag the sparkplug wire it is connected to is all one piece. Can't just replace the wire. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to repalace the sparkplug wire or where to find a complete mag/sparkeplug wire unit?????

Who has a line on parts for the engines???

I have a complete original owners manual. Unfortunately I am too dumb to email the manual but will send one out snail mail if you pay for postage and and copying. It has a complete parts list....etc.

just take apiece of copper wire brieded kind same size and solder it to where it should go then put a plastic tube over it and put a strong flexable glue inside where solder is made and put a connecter for plug the best glue is called the welder from homax sold at lowes i did it and it works fine also you can make it faster there is a needle inside carb use the most upper notch it should give more speed sorry there is no parts except what i listed before

some other oils that worked great in the bike machine are moterex motocross 1and3/4 once per gal also nosmoke oil the synthetic one at 3 and 1/2 per gal also opti2 these for hot weather ajust if you must and powerplus at 3and 1/2 to 3/4 also i mostly add only 1 once of mek and nitro power it give good power and is safer in case the gas has lots of alchol i use only high test gas and i have overlaped with these oils like changing over on trips with no problems but of course i don/t mix oils

to those useing friction drives if you want the tires to last longer get the epoxy from locktight the professional and mix in some graphite powder in your epoxy mix it will still give good traction but it cause less wear even more so if you have increased the rooler size a lot i usealy start out with spiral flore nails with marine tex epoxy then add bondo then the graphite mix last as it cheaper than useing only marine tex which is very costly but is the only thing strong enough for the base you can always put more graphite mix on as needed from wear this way you save gas and tires last as well

The two most popular Chinese bicycle makes are the "Flying Pigeon" and the "Forever".
I hope these two are represented in your collection.

As for the question, the bikes are identical to any number of British bicycles which were built between 1890 and 1915, and there wouldn't be any "regulations".
Bicycles are subject to CPSC rules (Consumer Products Safety Commision) but not DOT regulations.
It might be best to put reflectors on these bikes before offering them for sale.

Dear Mr. Gaede,
I am a mechanical engineer living in India. I have a special interest in small engines, and have carried out a study of the Lohmann engine. Made in Germany in 1949 to 1952, it was designed by Hermann Teegen. It is a unique design of a small two-stroke engine using compression ignition instead of spark ignition, but the fuel was carburetted and not injected as is normally the case in larger diesel engines. It worked by a mechanically complicated variable-compression arrangement.
I want to purchase a Lohmann and have been looking for one. It is rather hard to find and so far I have not been able to find one.
I want to get in touch with someone who has actually used one and would like to know his experience with it.
Since you owned one, I would like to know which fuel you have used - I understand that paraffin and not diesel is the recommended fuel. I believe people tried different fuel mixtures using combinations of petrol, diesel, paraffin, and two-stroke oil, with different results. I would appreciate if you kindly reply with a copy to my email address akhileshagarwal2000@yahoo.com

anyone heard of this one.

google search=Homestead Your steam or diesel-powered bicycle.

In 1954, Schwinn mounted a Smith-type steam generator on one of their
bicycle models---it powered a mini-steam engine.

And in 1952 or 1953 I had a Willy Messerschmitt variable-compression
diesel that powered a bicycle. The compression was lowered for starting
by a cable from one of the bicycle handles. The cable rotated the
diesel cylinder-head. After the toy 3/4 horsepower diesel started, the
cable was released to restore normal compression and power.

Annoying as hell, can't even find a reference to these two little gems
in the stupid search engines.

Dear Graham,
I acquired a Lohmann in Sept 06 and have completely restored it to fine working condition. I have learnt its intricasies the hard way and made some design improvemnts. I honed the cylinder 0,2 mm oversize, made a new piston locally and fitted new rings. It is a very fine piece of engineering and runs very well on kerosene/5 % 2T oil mixture. It starts easily[except when it is worn out] and idles smoothly. It delivers plenty of power for running a bicycle at 30 kph at half throttle. I have exploded diagrams and instrution manual. If anyone needs help with his Lohmann, wants to build one, or has experience with running it on bio-diesel/vegetable oil, please contact me, I can help with advice, instruction manual, spare piston and rings.

I have honed the cylinder 0,2 mm oversize and made a new piston and rings locally. I have also made some changes in the original design to improve performance. It runs best on kerosene/5 % 2T oil mixture. It starts easily, runs with low noise and vibration and idles at low rpm smoothly. It has ample power to run a bicycle with single rider at 30 kph at half throttle. I have diagrams and operating instructions. If anyone needs any help for restoring or building a Lohmann[a skilled model engineer can take it up as a project], or with spare piston and rings, or has any experience with running the Lohmann on bio-diesel or vegetable oil, please contact me.

Hi. I'm interested in that motor and i live in Portugal. Is it complete or is any part missing? Can you send me some photos? How much do you want for it including postage to Portugal?
Best regards.

MOTORIZED BICYCLES:General help posted by: Cindi Morgan on 9/21/2005 at 12:48:09 PM
We have this motorized by pedal AMF Roadmaster Bike, shows manufactured 5-78 with the number 030857 on the front bar, the writing before the number is worn off so don't know what it means. It has the motor on top of the rear wheel that engages by flipping a switch after you start peddling, there is a headlight, horn etc. We can not get it to even try to start my husband thinks it is the actuator? Does anyone know where to get parts, a repair shop in the Ft. Worth, Texas area or basically any help at all would be appreciated. Wanted to fix it up so my son can commute at Texas Tech University.

I admit to no experience w/ this type of motor, however there are the three basics to start with, of air, fuel, and spark. All three must be present and in the proper quantity. Checking for spark involves taking the plug out, reattaching the plug wire to the plug and grounding it against the engine case while the engine is cranked. This is best done without holding any of the items in hand, just laying there on the engine case will be fine, as it can be a shocking experience otherwise. Air presence can be assumed if the filter is clean, the intake gaskets are good, and the throttle engages the carbuerator.(usually moving a small piston that can be seen through the air filter opening, w/ filter removed.) Fuel presence is a little trickier to figure out, but a wet plug or exhaust port will indicate a fuel getting where its supposed to go. A consistent approach to this project may result in successful running vehicle, but it is old and these were not noted for their reliability even when new. A new Kinetic TFR might be a better choice for a reliable commuting vehicle.

viewing. Lots of neat cycles, from Lightweights to
Antique. There are contributions from six different

Thank you

Those are no different than the 26 x 2.125 WW tires that you can get from you local bike shop. Look to be Kenda made. Your LBS would probably be cheaper too.
If not, you might try Maple Island Sales, http://www.mapleislandsales.com/search.php
They have a good assortment of old style balloon tires.

MOTORIZED BICYCLES:Start from scratch posted by: Stephen on 9/6/2005 at 6:53:30 PM
I want to put an engine on my bike, but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on some kit. Is there anyone here who has done this from scratch? I want to use an old weedeater engine, fabricate a rear rack, put it on that, and drive the back wheel. I know you can buy kits but i'm trying to SAVE money, not spend it. Any help is appreciated, please send plans, instructional pics, or help to iliveformyking@hotmail.com Thanks again in advance,

In the archives here there's a lot of information on using a weed wacker motor. Also there are pictures in the picture database of a Ryobi weed wacker mounted to a bike.

MOTORIZED BICYCLES:Mink's Bicycles posted by: john martin on 9/5/2005 at 3:37:38 PM
Has anyone ever heard of a bike by Minky's Bicycles?
The one I have is a 26" with a frame much like the Schwinns of the 50s and early 60s so I would guess this one would be about 1960 because of the condition. It has a 700s Whizzer motor on it. Any info. appreciated.
Thanks,
John
