We have a SaftiCycle....seems to be all original. Think the manufacturer was in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Have you learned anything yet?

I would be very interested in renting/borrowing the frame for 30 days so that I can fabricate a copy. I have some poor copies of the original sales literature if anyone is interested.

AGE / VALUE:   Parted out, given away. he shook his head. posted by: Chris on 6/11/2002 at 5:42:15 PM
I droped off the rest of the bike that I had picked up in the rummage sale. It was a Schwinn Continental in a odd shade of green and my pal took one look at the date code and told me it was from 1965! One fellow said it was too nice to part out. Loyal Schwinn fans remembered the bike when they sold new. I said I wanted the derailer and some other bits for another project but they shook their heads. I didn't think it was that old but he commented that you don't see many these.

If you part it out, the world may lose one Continental, but those donor parts may bring back 3 others!

REPRODUCTIONS:   Repro cruisers w/ Mercury name circa 2000/2001 posted by: Terry on 6/4/2002 at 5:49:40 PM
Spring 2001 wife bought new bike at Dicks Sporting Goods (Phila suburbs) to be used for riding with our young kids. They had a promo clearance sale on Planet Earth bikes. When we got there to look at them , they also had a line of (unadvertised) retro full dress cruisers sold under the Mercury name. Beautiful color schemes, tanks, racks, fender lights, fender skirts, white wall balloon tires, Really cool.(although my wife didn't think so). I hesitated buying one for myself, (with three kids, the garage is already filled with bikes and ride-ons) but went back a couple of weeks later only to find that they were all gone. In the year plus since, I have casually searched ebay and the internet and have not found a single reference or example to these cool repros. Can anybody shed any light?

The first one has a friction wheel, so it probably sat out over the front wheel.
Not sure of the brand, but I can say it IS NOT a Sears, Free Spirit or Doodlebug motor.

Second one uses a belt drive. Possible Whizzer??

Are there any Velosolex's out there for sale. I've been toying with the idea of picking one up. Would like something affordable. Say a beater, something ratty but running. Thanks, Geo

Not easy to find. Just pick up a new one and enjoy!
I picked up a N.O.S. tire for a pal who acted like a jerk that day (and for the most of the time afterwards too) and so I kept it myself. Now I have it on my own Solex.
