WANTED:   Sutter -French Child racing 3 speed posted by: Craig on 4/8/2010 at 11:16:26 AM
I have an early 1970s Sutter French 3 speed road bike. The tires are marked 32-440 500A. I am restoring the bike for my son and I need tires and inner tubes for this. I have checked all available sites online and no one seems to be able to get tires this size anymore. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

The topic has come up before, and the message on Harris Cyclery has been there a long time: "We used to be able to get a few tires in this size, but I'm afraid our source has dried up, and we have no more left. We have no alternate sources, sorry we can't help you if you need this size. Please do not write to us about this, we really can't do anything for you."
My suggestion is to use (20") 406 rims, since there's such a wide selection of rims and tires available and the radius is what, 5/8" smaller? You could use the existing hubs (and save the old ones for posterity). Your LBS would build them for you, or no doubt Vin right here at Menotomy could help find the best match. The only clearance problem I can picture would be brake caliper adjustment, and if necessary those could also be swapped reversibly.

MISC:   Raleigh CRUISERS?? posted by: PAT on 4/3/2010 at 10:21:37 PM
April 4, 2010
Recently came across the term "Raleigh CRUISERS" on a Canadian e-bay site and haven't heard that Raleigh made a cruiser style bike. Does anyone know what they are like or have any idea about them? Were they made by Ralieigh just in Canada? The pictures of some on e-bay showed a ladie's bike with what looked like a lower step through than the Colt or Space Riders I've tried. I'm really curious about them.

Many thanks!

How do you define cruiser? Some folks seem to think it means roadster. On the Chicago Craigslist, which I check often, the Schwinn Suburban, Breeze and the like get lumped into this category a lot. Of course some people can't tell the difference between a roadster and a ballooner, but those who can may not agree on terms.
You didn't specify age. Don't forget that by the late 70s many if not most of the Raleighs coming into North America came across the Pacific...
If you haven't already, you can look at catalogs of the real Raleighs on Sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/index.html
