WANTED:   Gym Dandy Tires need repair/ replacement posted by: Katy Dirks on 2/10/2010 at 12:16:56 PM
Hello,

I saw that you posted a comment about your surrey tires and I was hoping you might be able to help me.

I had a Gym Dandy growing it and it was the BEST toy a child could have. My mother threw ours away when we were teenagers and I looked for years to find one for my own children.
I finally found one at an antique market about a year ago - spent a ton of money and a ton of time restoring it. My kids LOVED it.... until I let them drive it through the 4th of July parade
last year....and the old rubber tires shredded.

I don't know what to do. I have tried every bike store within 30 miles, have called countless rubber companies... no one can give me an answer on how to fix/ replace these tires. My kids are heartbroken.

Do you have any ideas for me?

Thanks a ton.

Katy

Maybe you could replace the rims with modern ones and use tires that are readily available.

Being naturally curious, I did a search and found two for sale.
atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/atq/1588475998.html
ebay item 160374070001
The one on ebay had had its front wheels replaced as Patrick suggests. It looks like lawn tractor technology. I have no idea how the originals are mounted or what sort of axles or bearings they have, but apparently someone found a solution. There's an email address in the listing.
Your local bike shop ought to be able to help. Were your originals solid rubber? Don't settle for hard tires unless you have to. Pneumatic tires and their wheels are easy to find in 12,16, and 20 inch sizes for bikes, and then there's wheelchair, lawnmower, etc.
Please let us know how you make out.

FOR SALE:   1987 Trek 400 Reynolds 531 w/Shimano 600 arabesque posted by: Salem Mazzawy on 2/9/2010 at 7:19:05 AM
1987 Trek 400: USA lugged Reynolds 531, Shimano 600 arabesque
For sale: 1987 US made Trek 400 with parts upgraded to Shimano 600 arabesque group. Trek called this a 22.5" which works out to around a 57cm center to top.
This was the nicest bike Trek sold with a sport road geometry, which provides for a nice stable ride with some light touring randonee abilities. The stock parts were fair to middling, so most everything has been upgraded to a Shimano 600 arabesque group. I even have the original Trek owner's manual.

Group: crankset, bb, derailleurs, shifters, brake calipers, headset (note, the cool scalloped headset can be adjusted with standard wrenches) are all 600 arabesque. Brake levers are different 600 (I have a single arabesque lever with scratches I will include in case you can/want to find a match). Hubs, may be 600 (they came from the same bike as the other parts) but are just labeled Shimano and are very early cassette hubs.

Wheels: They are 27" with quality Mavic rims and Continental tires. I know 27" has a stigma to it, but you can get quality tires, and the actually difference is just a few mm, so no functional difference on the road. The bike originally came with 700c and could easily be returned to that with plenty of brake adjustment. These wheels were nicer than the stop ones. If it really bothers you, relace with 700c rims.

Other: Vetta saddle, SR stem, unbranded vintage bulge (not shim) bars, Gipiemme seatpost (27.2), and Benotto tape, sr pedals.

Size: Trek called this a 22.5" frame (roughly 57cm). You can find a catalog here with geometry charts at the end:
http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/...TrekCatalog.pdf

Full gallery of large photos (click and click again) can be viewed here: http://pics.bikerag.co/showgallery.php?cat=1264

Price: $400
Located in central CT, and many thanks for local pickup, but I can ship at buyer's cost.

FOR SALE:   Monark Post War Wheels posted by: William on 2/8/2010 at 12:14:08 PM
You are looking at a pair of post war 26" chrome wheels that came off a 1950 Monark Super Deluxe. The rear hub which is a New Departure Model D coaster, and is in very good condition with shiny chrome. The front hub is a New Departure Model W, (is not from the Monark), but matches the rear hub and spoke pattern of front wheel.

Included are all the spokes and nipples. One rim is shinier than the other, the other one is faded a little. These would be good, correct cores for replating and correct for most post war 26" balloon tire bicycles. These were disassembled for restoration that I never got around to.

$45.00 for the pair, not including shipping.

Email me with any questions and/or pictures.
