FOR SALE:   1951 Men's Schwinn posted by: Duke on 1/28/2010 at 8:52:40 AM
I have a 1951 men's full-size Schwinn (H#163597). Chicago-built. Brown color, smooth ride, 1-speed, coaster brake. Front suspension is a "springer" type. Everything seems original. Chain guard, decals, front "Schwinn" plate, rear rack, kick stand. No fenders, horn, light, nor rust. Tires are 26x2.125 Schwinn Typhoon (22to 35 lb.) & hold pressure. Kept indoors always. Original owner is father-in-law. This bike is quite servicable and ready to roll. Perfect "shore" bike. Have seen similar bikes on internet for $50-500 so value is fluid. Would like to have it go to a bike enthusiast. Make me an offer or a better feel for value. Philadelphia, PA area.

Like Gordon, I've got a 3-speed Breeze. I took a look at a few of Tom Findley's catalogs
http://www.trfindley.com/
- not all of them by any means- and found that in 1968 you could get a Breeze with 1 (coaster), 2 (Bendix AutoMatic) or 3 (Sturmey-Archer) speeds, which was true of most of the models they sold in the 60s. By 1971, they were only offering the kickback hub on selected niddleweight models and the Breeze was available 1 or 3. Earlier, ca. 1964, there was no Breeze model, but the Racer and Traveler came in women's models with 3 hub options.
You could also find middleweights (Hollywood, etc) with the 2-speed hub.
All that said, IMO the Bendix 2-speed is collectible all out of proportion to its utility. It's heavy and it's inconvenient. On the plus side, to be fair, it's pretty reliable and requires no adjustment (not counting bearings) and no cables. And it is of course cool.
What I'm trying to say is, if you're collecting, low riding or what we used to call profiling, go for it. If you're going to ride far you'll get a lot more for your money if you skip the kickback. Breezes are easy to find, and if you look at derailleur machines the Collegiates and Suburbans are too.
Has anybody bought a Bendix AutoMatic hub lately? How much are they going for?
