MISC:HELP posted by: Nick on 5/6/2009 at 7:37:49 AM
Hi There,

I have a 1969 Columbia Sports III (3 speed) in mint condition with a working headlight. I have not been able to find any information about this on the forum or else where. Is this bike rare? What do you think its worth?

Thanks for your help!

RE:MISC:HELP posted by ken on 5/6/2009 at 2:36:57 PM
Not particularly rare, although three-speeds were not a big fraction of bike sales that year. They tend to last forever, partly because they're mostly for adults, and the American ones are not collectible. Its value will be greatest to a commuter, but I think they're coming back into style.
Is that a Shimano hub and twist-grip? According to Frank J. Berto,
(http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/'hadland/page35.htm),
Columbia and the other big American makers were installing Japanese components by that time. The 333 hub has a great reputation, and in my experience is easier to use and adjust than the Sturmey-Archer (see also http://sheldonbrown.com/brandt/sturmey-archer.html).
S-A made a twist-grip too, though.

I'm looking for a tire for an old child's bicycle with sidecart. The tire says SWAN Puncture Proof 20 x 1.75. I know nothing about the bike or the tires, but it was my mothers and I'd like to rehab it. I'd appreciate any information!

MISC:   1970's Free Spirit posted by: Hexkey on 5/4/2009 at 3:31:21 PM
I have a 70's Free Spirit. Took it to my local bike shop, they gave me an estimate of more than i could afford to get the bike going. I want/need this bike for daily errands and i'm unemployed. Any suggestions? Picture included.

RE:MISC:   1970's Free Spirit posted by ken on 5/5/2009 at 2:18:55 PM
I gather from the picture that it's a three speed with coaster brake. Is it? A nice utilitarian city bike. It appears to need tires and tubes - is anything else wrong with it? What all did the LBS recommend? Nowadays, $30 for a pair of tires and tubes is about minimum. Can you install them? After you get the wheels on, you'll need to hook up and adjust the shift cable, unless you prefer to ride in high gear all the time. There are good instructions at the Park Tool website, or you can ask a friend for help & moral support. Of course, you could find another bike for $30 or less at a resale or a garage sale, but yours is worth fixing.

RE:MISC:   1970's Free Spirit (Response to Ken) posted by Hexkey on 5/5/2009 at 2:26:20 PM
Well the shop said there's a hairline crack in one of the wheels and they can't in good conscious overlook it because it's dangerous - so that brought the repair price way more to what I could afford right now. I do want this bike restored for riding eventually. It would be nice to have a coaster for errands. It's just my pace.

RE:RE:MISC:   1970's Free Spirit (Response to Ken) posted by ken on 5/6/2009 at 8:10:25 AM
If the front rim is cracked, a used front wheel should be easy to find for replacement. If it's the back, and you want to save the three speed coaster, it is possible to lace a new rim on the existing hub and spokes. You may have to borrow a bike for a while until you can get that done... or you could just buy the tires and tubes, install them yourself and take your chances with the crack...

FOR SALE:Vintage Huffy Daisy Daisy tandem posted by: Erin on 4/29/2009 at 8:56:10 AM
I found an old Huffy Daisy Daisy in my parents' storage garage and am wondering what it might be worth, and am having a hard time finding info online. It is completely original but is missing the back seat cover. It's in decent shape and is definitely ride-able. Would like to sell but aren't sure what's a reasonable price. Anyone know?
