I needed some of those cable guides and pump pegs for a bike I'm building,so I cut them from a couple of girl bike frames.Then I had a pile of bits left over.So I started a way ratical streched kustom.Streched,Raked,Lowered,Double bar-1" drop at the seat,full size 26"--Hay! I got a motobike!Didn't look too ratical when it all went together.Added a small penut tank.Need to clean welds add wheels and test ride before going to next step of paintin.

If this works well, we'll be carrying a lot of different parts. I especially want to offer those modern two-legged center stands Gary uses on his Hogg choppers, among other things. We're considering engine motorizing kits, too. We'll also be carrying complete bikes. Gary's very interested in our offering his S Rod bikes in the US, but we're considering the sale of one-of-a-kind fine kustoms, too.

Another bit of good news is that we have signed up for a new web-hosting service with unlimited bandwidth and three times the disc space. The next issue (May) will be on that host, with the archives and gallery migrating there soon.

I am about ready to build some extended forks for my chopper. I have not figured out the length yet to make it level, But it will be around 4'long. What is the best way to do this? Is it strong enough to butt pipe to old forks? Should I slip pipe inside at the welds? I want it to look uniform all the way down, and not different diameters. I think that looks bad. Give me your thoughts on this please. Thanks, M

I would definitely reinforce the joint with a tube inside. There's too much stress on the fork legs to go with a butt-joint, in my opinion.

As for the planning the fork length. What I'd recommend is blocking the frame, with rear wheel on, up against a big piece of cardboard, so that it has the attitude you want, trace its outline, then put the front wheel up against the cardboard where it looks right, then mark where the axle is touching. Use that for planning your fork length/head angle.

Jim has got it right,the only point I would like to add is;
the more laid back head angle will require more fork offset
(bend) to keep the steering from being heavy and floppy at
low speeds. With a 45 degree head angle ,4 to 7 inches works

Haven't seen them on modern Kustoms ,but seems Truss Rods would or could be used to add strength and give that motorcycle look.

Thanks for all the input. Mike, Do you mean bend the forks back so when I sit on it the forks will be straight? I dont have the head tube on it yet, I'm not going to make too much of an angle.

Build the forks strong enough so there's no bounce or bending
under your weight. Forks are weakest at the unicrown bends so
I like to beef up that area with a 1 1/4 inch inner diameter
tube slid over the fork crown at the steerer, with cut outs
for the fork legs. A trident effect, this third center piece
joints to a cross tube connecting the fork tubes. It works for
me and I'm over 200 pounds. See pictures of tallbike #1 in
BikeRod&Kustom Gallery, page 23 I think, it has this fork
modification. If there's any bandwidth left this month! Mike

No, that's not true. Every marine battery needs to be recharged, thats why they sell photovoltaic panels for yachts.
You didn't say how many watts your stereo is, that makes a big difference. If it's less than 35 watts, you can get away with using a 7amphour 12volt gel cell, available in most hobby shops. That will save a lot of weight.
If your stereo is over 35 watts , the marine battery would be good. A lot of times you can buy a marine battery used for a good price.

Marine batteries are good for the purpose because they're designed for deep-cycle discharge. Car batteries are continuosly charged by the alternator. If you used one in deep-discharge (running it until the battery was dead, before recharging), the car battery wouldn't last very long, and they're expensive. Golf cart batteries are designed for deep discharge for the same reason.
Most gel-cell batteries, as used in emergency lighting systems, are designed for continuous charging until needed, so they don't work very well for deep-discharge either.

We used a motorcycle battery in the 2much!!! trike. They come in a lot of different sizes and capacities. They may not be deep-discharge, but they're cheap enough to replace fairly often, if needed. We got ours at Sears, for about $14. Marine batteries are much larger and heavier than motorcycle batteries, and so are golf cart batteries, although they have greater capacity than any motorcycle battery.

can someone please help me with lacing my rims? i need to know how to do it or if there are any special tricks to doing it.

also, does anyone know how a rear 3 spd hub works? i need to see a diagram of one. how do i hook up a shifter wire? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those dope-snobs on their $2500 road bikes wearing another $500 of spandex suits and sunglasses just CAN NOT handle seeing us cruising on our muscle bikes and roadsters.

I just wanted to say that on some bkes you dont have to drill anything you just bolt it onto the axle like did on my chopper which WAS a 20inch diamond back viper some guy ramped it and bent the headtube back so i cut it all off and put 4 foot forks on it.

Has a show called "Monster Garage" on the Discovery Channel on Monday nights.

Last night they took a Mini Cooper and added 2 snowmobile engines and tracks to it so it could run on the road and on the snow.

It's a pretty cool show though Jesse gets a little tiring..

I wonder if they'll do one on motorized bicycles???!!

If they did one on motorized bicycles, they'd probably be turning one into one of those little joke bikes, or something equally stupid, like a scooter. I've only watched the show once. The episode I saw was about them taking a $150,000 Winston Cup stock car racer and turning it into a "street sweeper".

At first I thought it was going to be cool, as the gun culture refers to an automatic shotgun as a "street sweeper"; so I was anticipating something really fun. I imagined they'd be fitting the thing out with those
gatling-style helicopter miniguns, heat-seeking missiles and other really deadly s**t. So I turned it on and quickly realized that, no, they were just turning the thing into a machine which would actually sweep streets- with
rotating brushes and vacuum sucking. What the f**k!!! Sucking is right. Lamest d****d concept I've ever seen. What a waste of talent and money.

Hey Jim. If they had to actually build something logical, there wouldnt be a challenge. The whole challenge is putting someithng like, lets say, a snowmobile, into a mini cooper. Or how about the one where they had to turn a school bus into a pontoon boat. If this wasn't enginered correctly, it would have sunk just as easily as it would have when it was stock. I can agree that some of the stuff they do is pretty lame. And the challenges at the end are not that big of a challenge. And the Big Schwag (announcer) is equaly stupid.

The bus pontoon thing makes a little more sense than the street sweeper thing, I guess. At least an old school bus is cheaper than a $150,000 racing car to be ruined for its original purpose. And there are a lot worse "reality" shows out there. The really bad ones ruin people's lives, instead of only their cars. I only watched Monster Garage the once because I'm on a list of potential contractors for another series the same producers are developing, called Monster House, in which houses are given "fantasy makeovers". Most houses wouldn't be any worse from that, as they're mostly badly-designed crap anyway. I wouldn't be willing to turn a Frank Lloyd Wright house into a miniature golf course, though.

Sorry Jim but I just have to disagree.
F*** Frank Lloyd Wright! The guy was a D**kweed and most (although not all) of his designs were ugly, nasty, unliveable spaces.
I do like some of the exterior architectural design, but as far as the interiors...? Um, no.
Give me the money and time to do some Interior Design work on one of his pieces of artsy fartsy crap and it could be really cool.
Sorry, but having spent the last two years studying all aspects of Interior Design (NOT to be confused with interior decorating!!! If you want decorating call that irritating scmuck Christopher Lowell!)
I can't help but have my own definite opinions about that sort of thing. As does everyone, so I'm not really trying to bash anyone else's opinion I just wanted to state mine.
Now, back to what really matters- Kustom Bikes...

I didn't say that I liked FLW's houses, but they have historical value. I like that his sense of design extended down to the furniture inside the house, whether it was comfortable or not. And yes, he was a D**kweed; but that doesn't mean his work shouldn't be preserved as the work of, arguably, the first modern architect. Me, I prefer a nice Palladian villa, but I'll never be able to afford one of those either. 8-) Now, back to KustomBikes.

My saddle is 31 inches off the ground. But I can either stand or sit comfortably while pedaling. I have a 26 inch rear wheel so I couldnt make the seat much lower. The #$%&
Fiberglass Seat Post I built takes up height over the wheel.
Today my bike ride is cancelled due to snow and ice on the roads.It snowed yesterday and last night here on Long Island. We got about 2 inches.
I rode in the snow yesterday while it was snowing, but it was 36 degrees and the snow wasn't sticking to the pavement.
Then, as darkness fell, it started to ice up. It's 21 degrees today, so the roads are covered with slippery stuff.
I hope you are enjoying better bike weather than I am.
Your bike sounds like in belongs on a boardwalk by a beach in sunny Southern California. I bet you can get some cute girl in a bikini to pose on your bike , for that picture you're gonna send to the Bikerodnkustom Gallery.

i have a girls 20 in hawthorne with the twin tubes on the top. i am sawing off the current pair and welding on a longer set form a 26 in upside down making it a twin bar 20 in boys bike. then if i have enough of the right bend i will make it a 4 bar. i also have a 50s murray tank bike restore/project going, a few nondescript choppers, a 30s sears boys 20 in tanker, a 24 in Shelby Hiawatha, custom 24 in schwinn canti and too many other things to mention. trouble is what to do with it when its done? is there a market for custom/chpper bikes? i have no need for trophys

there is a pretty big market for choppers on ebay. i always look under collectibles:transportation:bicycles big choppers are getting expensive.

What do you do with the bike when you're done?
Riding it is my first choice.

Selling it for money is another option, but I don't know anything about that.
What I did was introduce my bike as if it was an Engineering Prototype and I told people I would need to sell at least ten of them to break even.
Ten bikes all the same wouldn't be custom bikes any more, they'd be Limited Production.
That bike cost $300.00 to build and you can see it on page 69 of the BR&K Gallery. Test Marketing drives people crazy.
I had a best offer of $1200.00 dollars for that bike and ten people wanted to pay $700.00. Being a ladies bike I noted that the most a woman could offer was $500.00 . The guys wanted it for their girlfriends. But there were a lot of people screaming $200.00 who must not have heard the best offer, $1200.00.
I would say that Ebay is better than trying to sell it yourself, because the ebay computer automatically ignores any bids that are less than the high bid.

hey yall! i'm back(if anyone forgot about me.)i have been workin on my jc higgins, but it is such a pain in the butt trying to sand the whole thing so i might give up..:( well, since that project was stinkin i bought a new bike. i got a 1945 columbia 24in. cruiser from my brother. he restomized(restored and customized) it. i got it for $30!!! he spent about 200 but he needed a little money and was done with bikes so it was a great deal. well anyways i was lookin at it last night and i decided to do a little touch up work on the paint.after i was lookin on how to improve the look. i saw a big ugly black tube stickin out of the rim(the tube filler thing) and so i painted it red to match my bike. since it is red andblack the red tube with a black cap looks cool. now i ordered skull and crossbones valve caps (chrome with red eyes) so it will look sweet! has anyone else done/thought of this? i cant be the only one!

o yeah also- does anyones girlfriend/wife have a problem with you having your bike(s)? my girlfriend thinks i love my bikes more than her!! ahhh what should i do????

im with you on the girlfriend thing. im 32 yrs old and she tells me "you should grow up, why do spend money and time do messing with hose bikes.do something more constructive" she doesnt understand the pride and feeling i get when all the work pays off when the end result is just what you wanted. anyways keep doing what you do, if she really cares for you shell get used to it. mine has. good luck all!!!

Cool idea on the valve stem.I think they sell a stem cover at auto stores, for mag wheels.Lots of girls/wifes get mad at what we do.Hell,they get mad if you go fishing,play golf,ride bikes,hunt,.....

You might have noticed in the new Bikerodnkustom that a number of builders are just building bikes for their daughters. I just about gave up trying to get a girlfriend into bikes, and I let Mellisa (the girl who asked me to adopt her)design the ladies bike that I always wanted to build. Everything worked out great because her grandfather worked at an aircraft manufacturing plant and he taught her enough to design fiberglass parts, and I wanted to build the whole bike in fiberglass anyway.
Since I was offered $1200.00 for the bike and it cost only $300.00 to build, that clears the way for a 400% profit.
Which shows you that if a girl has an eye for what looks nice, and you build it the way she tells you to, the girl can make your bikes profitable.

The new issue is great! I saw the most radical custom bikes I've ever seen!

I see what you mean, Oscar. Robert Egger of Specialized did a cowboy-flavored kustom bike once, but nothing like this in the saddle department. What a weird item, but nice, in a strange way. Almost makes me want to..............Naah!

I don't see why not. It's just a matter of getting a shifter and rerunning the shifter cable.
