MISC:What was my childhood bike? posted by: Jeff on 9/27/2008 at 6:07:44 PM
Can someone here help me identify what my childhood bike was? It was a 20 inch 3 speed. Banana seat, high rise handlebars. The most identifiable feature about it was that the top bar where the t-handle shifter mounted had two smaller tubes running all the way side by side. I thought at one time it was a Western Flyer. It was blue and to a 9 year old boy it was the coolest machine ever. I'd give anything to find another....

AGE / VALUE:Help Identify 2 Sting-Ray-like Frames posted by: Scott on 9/27/2008 at 4:11:51 PM
I apologize if this question is in the wrong section, but I'm new (great website btw, much info). I acquired these frames many years ago. Any help to identify these frames' make, model, and manufacture year would be much appreciated. (I will post more pictures, if I am able to edit after I post this)

FRAME 1: The light blue frame appears to have been repainted from a gold or amber. The neck has two metal pins where I assume a metal label was before (e.g. Huffy or Schwinn label?). There is a decal on the center post that was not painted over with blue (all I can read on it is "Chicago," "Supply Co."). Notice how the frame flares at the end of the rear triangle (I have never seen another frame like this). I can locate no serial number; I have read that Huffy does not stamp serials into the frame, rather they are on a decal (not sure if true). Any ideas?

FRAME 2: Painted primer over burgundy. The remainder of a decal that is stuck to the original paint is located on the front neck. This decal appears to depict the Schwinn logo (e.g. black, white, red oval with compass in center). Did this logo appear on vintage models? Anyway, the serial number is stamped into the left lower neck: 9 233 3937. I am thinking that this frame must be a re-manufacture of an earlier model.

After much sanding, I finally found the serial number for the light blue FRAME 1. Its located on the outside of the left axle mount: M05232...

FRAME 1 is a Schwinn frame from 1954?... can someone confirm?

Also, in addition to FRAME 2: there is a "P" stamped on the bottom of the crank mount (on the frame).

Frame 1 is most likely a Murray Wildcat (also could be a
Western Flyer Buzz Bike - same frame). See attached photo and notice unique long point at rear axle. Don't know Frame 2.

I believe the other frame (silvery ice blue one) is a rollfast. Rollfast is the name of the manufactuctuer like huffy or murray.

I want to sell our bike and was hoping you could help me with fair market value. It does not have the drag brake. It has a sears head badge and the Huffy serial number. It's blue with some scratches to the paint. The chrome is in good shape but could use a good cleaning. I did the front fender and it came out very nice but was scared to do anything to the paint. It seems to be all original except for the tires. I'll post a picture and maybe you can tell me what you think. having problem posting picture. please e-mail for the pictures.

AGE / VALUE:SEARS SCREAMER 1 posted by: Fred A on 8/24/2008 at 12:13:24 PM
Hi all

I just bought for $100 at a Charity Auction a Sears Screamer 5 speed. Missing only the front chrome fender, headbadge and handlebar tape, it's all original. Paint color is mainly goldbut wuth a red fade to it. (As I usually collect only road and vintage balloon bikes, this was something different for me). This bike also has a dual spring front fork, a red Brake lever next to the 5-speed shifter and dual handbrakes. The decal on the chainguard reads SCREAMER with a large number 1 in a circle. Would anyone know the year it was made? I'm thinking 1969 or 1970.

Thanks!
Fred

MISC:Early 70's Orange Chopper Bike w/sissy bar and mag wheels? posted by: Russ Kent on 8/18/2008 at 2:52:07 PM
In '70 or '71 my Dad bought me a Day-Glo Orange bicycle that had mag style wheels, ape hangers and a sissy bar that went way beyond your head. This bike was very unique, I never saw another one around where I grew up. Does anyone know this bike I'm talking about? Any info, links or pix would be appreciated. I'd really love to find out about this bike, I dug the Hell out of it!

Hi, The original '68 to 73' Krate and the 5 speed Sting-Ray frames are one in the same. The newer replica '98 '99 frames are coaster brake frames and are narrower @ the rear axle mounts(drop-outs)and have no rear caliper brake mount. I think The Orange Krate was introduced in Dec.'67 and this was earlier than the intro. of the 5 speed sting-Ray. I think you'd have to find out the intro. date of the 5 speed Sting-Ray, if an earlier frame was in question. Every frame has a date code that can easily be deciphered. Go to the Schwinn Forums and post a pic. and serial # of any bike you want info. on. They will be able to help you.

I too, have a frame from December 1967 that is Kool Orange in original color and has the rear brake caliper that rises above the frame as it would if it was a krate.I have not found information to confirm the Orange Krate was released in 1967 but if so,can anyone share with me? As patrick stated, the 5 speed was not introduced until a little later based upon what I can find. I appreciate your comments. Thanks,Ron

I know of an all original Dec.'67 O/K,so they were probably introduced for the Christmas '67 shopping season. Sounds like you have one of them.
