Yes, Schwinn made the Apple Krate as the second one in the series in 1968. I know because I was 8 years young @ the time and I would drool @ them through the dealer window.

Do you think Ebay is a good place to locate one and if not, how about some suggestions.
by: 76.227.117.181

RE:RE:MISC:   What to look for posted by nate on 12/28/2007 at 6:37:47 AM
Yes, eBay and also your local craigslist.org
I prefer to buy stuff in person or at least from a reliable seller with a good reputation. Watch out for people on eBay who say something is original when it is really reproduction or an incorrect part. Look at their past auctions and make sure they sell a lot of bike stuff so they know their stuff.

I would look for the rarest of the orange krates...1968 no front fender and a pogo seat...They were dropped from the line after a mother suied Schwinn cause her son got ruptured on the seat..They went back to the stationary seat post...

I notice a lot of people refer to Pete's for having seats fixed or special restoration performed. Does this company have a website? Also a follow up question to Kim. Did all the original 68 orange krates have a pogo seat post?
by: 76.227.117.181

RE:MISC: What to look for posted by Jimmy on 1/7/2008 at 9:41:51 PM
You can find Pete's stuff at www.hyper-formance.com
He is an authorized Schwinn parts vendor and makes top notch reproduction parts. The Pogo seatposts were only available in 1968, 1969 bikes had rigid posts. I think Pete offers a repro pogo also.

I found my original papers when I got my first Muscle Bike. It is a Western Flyer Packet with papers. I am trying to make sure what bike this was as I do not have any pics from my younger days. Is there any way to determine the correct bike from the model number? The number that is written on the paper is MOM2766F I am guessing this is a 66 bike? I remember it being blue, rear slik, banana seat. It also had a front brake. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

It doesn't matter if its not a Schwinn. There are no Schwinn snobs here.
I didn't respond because I don't have an answer. I don't know of any Western Flyer serial number charts.
I've never even heard of a model called 'Packet'.

Have you looked in the archives here?

Also, for bicycles, you can't usually determine a model from a serial number.

Looks like a Krate with ram's horn bars and a lot of other goodies.
It also looks too good to be true.
I've seen a few great collectible bikes show up on the Boston craigslist over the past few days at very low prices and I suspect they are phishing for email addresses.

If you send them email, do it from a 'junk' email account.

I found an adv in a local paper for a '98 Schwinn Sting Ray Orange Krate single speed never riden (condition 1 )still in original box. I couldn't find such a bike in the dbase. Is this for real and if so any idea of value?
I also have an all original Dec '71 Orange Krate 5spd Rear disc brake I have owned since childhood in average. condition that I am restoring. If I were to buy the 98 for parts would this take away value from the real McCoy? Thanks for input.

THE 99 REPROS ARE NOT THE SAME QUALITY AS THE ORIGINAL. 99'S ARE MAYBE WORTH $250.-$300. AT LEAST THATS WHAT I'VE SEEN PEOPLE TRYING TO SELL THEM FOR. I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT PUT THE REPRO PARTS ON AN ORIGINAL KRATE BIKE.
