I found a Sears 5 speed bike in the dump last weekend. It also has the Shimano Automatic 5 rear hub. It is an automatic overdrive built into the freewheel. As the bike is ridden an internal sensor changes the freewheel from direct to overdrive. There are 5 sensitivity positions adjusted by turning the protector plate. The indicator needle moves to defeat the overdrive. I find it amazing that in 30 years (!) of dealing with bikes I have not seen one of these hubs until this week...

I've never seen (or even heard of) the automatic five.
Can you post a photo or two?

MISC:   DIY modern musclebike posted by: Ed on 6/27/2007 at 6:28:36 PM
I put a custom bike together for my son. I installed a shimano 3 speed hub on a modern freestyle frame. The trick to make the cable routing to work is using the linear v brake stud as a mount for the shift cable. I used a 6mm x 1.00 x 50mm bolt and a homemade alloy L shaped bracket with 2 holes drilled and use a brake cable adjuster to guide and mount it to the alloy bracket. 3 speeds are a big modification to a 1 speed 20 inch wheeled bicycle. The cool factor is knowing that nobody has one like yours. Ed

AGE / VALUE:   maroon "open road" musclebike posted by: Bill Grady on 6/24/2007 at 9:45:36 PM
I am looking for information on a bicycle I found at a thrift store. Unfortunately, I am fairly inept at operating computers, so a picture is out of the question.
The bicycle is a 20" musclebike, it is maroon, has a fake gas tank bearing a sticker that reads "Open Road" with some pinstriping around it. It also has a banana seat, ape hangers, chromed chain guard,a rear fender, a fork with springs and a ridiculous amt. of rake, a rear slick, and a chrome headlight. There is evidence of a head tube badge, mostly just sticker residue. The rear hub and coaster brake are labeled Bendix. Everything appears to be original, I am a enthusiast of vintage lightweights, so my knowledge of these bikes is nil, but I would say it is circa late sixties- early seventies. There are no pictures on this site that look quite like this bike- if you know anthing, or where else to look, please help-Bill

I have a well preserved Sears Gremlin (year?)
I'm not sure whether I want to keep it or sell it.
Depends on its worth.
Anyone have any idea of what it could fetch?
Any info on this bike would be great.
Thanks,

Curt

It depends on its exact condition. I would have to examine detailed pictures of it, with emphasis on any defects. Included is the URL of a picture I found on the Internet of one in very good aparent condition.

MISC:   Town and Country Trike posted by: Josh Eklow on 6/11/2007 at 1:45:19 PM
I just bought an old Town and Country Trike and the front wheel that the guy had on it was the wrong size. It was rubbing on the fender and the brakes were obviously made for a smaller wheel. Does anyone know what size wheel I should be looking for as a replacement?
