I have not looked to see if it's been fixed but I had a pal draw up a sketch of me on my Raleigh Chopper with some "guests" on the back end of the chopper seat. I'm crossing the ocean on my way back home from England. Carrying the Union jack in my hand. Bringing back Jenna, a pair of Russian brides.
In Ontario I had my chance to see them all and the best ones too. However I always went straight to the old bicycle shops. To buy and buy and buy. All those U.S. dollars converted into that colorful Canadian money and I brought back the goodies bikewise. Didn't go to the bar? they'd ask. No the bike shop and I'd show them the stash and they'd say I was weird. But you know what? This has paid off in the long run because today we have e- bay and along with my fun I have made money hand over fist re- selling that very same bike collection.

Canada was wild fun! I never set foot in her go go bars. The bike shops were way better. Good luck finding old goodies in Canada. I was VERY careful to buy it all.

I have two unusual shifters for a bike. They have two levers side by side each labels H and L. They are Shimano and the levers have the 333 on them. I have never seen anything like these. They go on the center tube. Please help me, when did they first make the 333 3 speed system? Any value here or just pitch them?

I grew up in Mississippi and had an Apollo Racer as a kid. My dad bought it at Western Auto. That bike was the coolest thing I had ever seen and the name was so awesome at the time. I found your message while I was online look for the bike also. I have checked ebay and craigslist but have had no luck.

I could be wrong, but the Ross bicycle company of Pennsylvania made a very nice musclebike called the Apollo. The Apollo Racer is probably the same bike. I presume that this bike was also branded to be sold by chain stores such as Coast-To-Coast and Western Auto. There is a long history of this practice in the bicycle industry, with giants such as Schwinn and Raleigh rebadging their models for retail chains to use as their "house brand" bikes.

I have a redish orange one up in the garage loft.
I thought they were long gone, but when I was putting on a new roof I foundthem.
The roof leaked so there is rust.
I think everything is original.
Not sure how to post a picture, butif I figure it out, I will.

AGE / VALUE:   decal found on stingray posted by: brian on 2/23/2007 at 4:33:54 PM
hi
im working on restoring a schwinn stingray which i thought was a fastback 5 speed but i found a sticker while sanding the frame that had crossed checkered flags with a 5 above them. i was wondering if this indecates the bike is a fastback or a krate. i think fastback because it was violet and no production krates were violet. i was just wondering what they ment and if i could get reproduction decals of it for the restoration. any help would be appreciated since i am a speedster/suburban guy and havnt ever worked on a stingray but this has been sitting around my shop and i decided to finally build it
thanks

Thats a magical, awesome decal isn't it? Wish I knew where to tell you to find one.
I'm sure you'll find this by posting on the schwinn bike forums however.
Good Luck

If the frame has a straight bar running from the headtube to the crank with that decal, it's a Fastback as opposed to Stingray's curved bar and cantilever bars; you may be able to find either original or repro decals at Memory Lane Classics or Mpale Island Sales. Good luck!

AGE / VALUE:   Need Help-Otasco Flying O Bike!!!! posted by: Al Kasishke on 2/23/2007 at 8:52:45 AM
I am looking for information on a bike I had when I was a kit. This would have been in the late 1960's. My parents purchased this from Otasco (Oklahoma Tire & Supply). The bike as a "chopper style", was all chrome and had a wheelie bar. This is about all I can remember. It seems like it had twin frame tubes. Thanks for any help you can give, Al.

Is it a single speed? Depending on when it was made, it could be a huffy, Murray or amf built. They all built bikes for Western auto. Do you have any pics, you could send?

i have heard numerous rumors and i am sure that it has been disscused before here but i am unable to find any information on the subject. the subject is, " DID SCHWINN EVER PRODUCE A COAL KRATE OR A GRAPE KRATE"? if so, what years would they have been produced? i heard possibly only 1968. also, what type of seat did it have, black w/white stripe and letters, black w/silver sparkle w/black or white letters and the same goes for the hand grips. also, did they make them in 5 speeds, 3 speeds or coasters? disc brakes? drum front brake? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks tim

No, in the original run of Krates (1968 to 1973) never included a Grape Krate or a Coal Krate.
They made a reproduction Grape Krate in the late 1990s. It was a single speed.

i have seen clones but none with years that would match. i think 1968 would be the year because that was when they did the first experiments with the colors and didnt a black fastback come out then? i have also heard that there might have even been a BLUEBERRY KRATE as well.

I did show up to a bike shop in central Texas with my Orange Krate, the owner told me he had helped a kid fix a weather-beaten bike like mine, only it was purple. He said it had the Schwinn headbadge, and a 5-speed shifter like my Krate. It had been a couple years back, and he didn't know where the kid lived. I kept my eyes peeled, but never saw the bike. I'm still searching for an answer to the Grape Krate too, as well as recent rumours to a "Cocoa Krate", in brown.

yes hello;
first thing u should always do, is buy a good schwinn bike book, there are plenty of them. also go to ebay, alot of books and pictures of bikes, parts etc. orange krates which i have, were white stripes on seat, and lettering on chain guard, not black. black, was lemon peeler, cotton picker and the rare grey ghost!!! it might not even be the orig. chainguard on it, or it was striped down to the chrome!! there is a guy in arizona who will paint and silk screen it, but im sure there are others. as for the seat it could be a stingray seat or a cheaper sears seat, who knows. make sure this bike wasnt re-painted!!! if it looks nice and repainted, the price is probabley right, maybe. u really got to look close at things, the springer, the fenders, they could be repros too!!!! do ur homework. this bike could be one of the repros from 98 to whatever!! just know mint all orig. krates go for 2 grand plus!! period. if thats the years, the seat should be all orange w/ white stripes and famous S circled. u could always buy repro ones. pete seats range from 60-130.00. check out sting-rays.com good luck. larry.
