Cotton Pickers were only made in 1970 and 1971 so if yours is real the second letter in the serial # should be an F or G (Or in some rare cases a late 1969 frame was used which would be an E frame.) In 1976 Schwinn made a Bicentennial Sting Ray in single, three and five speed versions and these were white as well. Also the Scrambler was made in white right around that same time. There are no reissued Cotton Pickers at this time.

AGE / VALUE:   BF40402 StingRay Junior green posted by: Jan on 9/25/2006 at 12:39:39 PM
I don't know what I have. The serial number doesn't conform to the lists of Schwinn serials - which would have it being madde in 1952 or 1958 - I don't think they made the String Ray - any size - that far back. Can anyone help me figure this out? The Serial # is stamped on the frame at the left rear wheel mount - which would be in the 50's as i read the lists. But the lists do not specify the "BF" only one letter. If I read this as F40402, then it was made in November 1952 - and is in really good shape!

Somewhere in the late-60s Schwinn introduced the Junior years after the Stingray was introduced in '63. From 1965 to March 1970, Schwinn adapted the double-letter/five-digit system for their serial#'s, so 'BF' is possible (1st letter is the month, and the 2nd one is for the year); in other words, your Stingray Jr. was made in February of '70. Another fact: Schwinn serial# location switched from the rear left dropout to the headtube at the same time of the serial# change-up!

Yep! If I spend enough time on-line asking questions - eventually I find out - thanks. Next question - is there a market for Juniors? Don't see them advertised - is that because they don't sell - or because there aren't any for sale? Is it worth the time to clean it up and try - it looks all original - even the gold metalic seat is in good shape.

There's a market for every Stingray model including Juniors though there may not be as many up for sale as Fastbacks or Krates, so get ready to invest your time in cleaning it up because in the long run the effort put in it will pay off in a matter of time or no time at all. Good luck!

My son is restoring a 1975 schwinn stingray and I don't think the wheels are original on it. We are trying to find out what wheels (rims) originally were on the 1975 stingray--it has a coaster brake.

Schwinn made every size for every model they made in the Chicago factory; after all, you can't roll off the assembly line without 'em! The OG wheels have what I call a 'herringbone stamping' in the middle /w 'Schwinn Tubular S-? ' stamped along the center. The front has a 'Schwinn-approved' hub while the rear has a Bendix coaster brake hub.
by: 199.179.239.230

RE:MISC: stingray rear wheel size posted by Mike on 9/30/2006 at 9:55:44 AM
The fron wheel should have been a 20x 1 3/4 schwinn s7 and the back should have been a bendix coaster brake hub laced to a 20x2.125 schwinn tubular S2

I bought my Scout new in 1974 for about $50...I'm still riding it more than 30 years later and it's in good shape. Someone back then told me it was "accidentally the only good bike Huffy ever made."

Write both serial#s down and click on Huffy & Schwinn serial# charts on this site; value usually depends on condition (Schwinn value run higher than Huffy!). Good luck!

A pair of channel-lock pliers and vise-grips works well for me; for more info go to www.bunchobikes.com. Good luck!

I've had good luck squeezing the assembly at the ends with a good size pair of channel locks. This releases the tension and the pin can be extracted or may fall out.
Sometimes a nut or something placed at the outboard end will make compression easier.

September 1979, otherwise if it's a 20" it's a Stingray. What color is the frame, chainguard, grips, & seat?

hi rod, thanks for the info. the seat, and grips are aftermarket. the frame, and chainguard are a redish, or burnt orange color. i can only tell by fliping it up side down, because someone kind of painted the bike. at any rate thanks for your input. it is greatly appreciated. mark.

The Sting Ray was far from the first 20 inch cantilever schwinn. you have exactly that a typhoon. made many yrs. can be made into a bogus stingray with ease, if the numbers are right. I would anyway. set of wald bars, seat and back bar, triple the value of it even if it was reported to be a typhoon. chaingaurds abound with stingray on them.
