'One's junk is another's treasure' is definitely the case here. The serial # was stamped on your Schwinn in April of 1964; the OG color buried under that disappointing black is actually a Radiant Coppertone hue that was introduced in '64, whereas Sunset Orange came about in 1973. By the way, you can click on to the serial # charts on this site to doublecheck that fact, but whether or not the frame is a 24" is beyond me. Good luck!

thanks for the info.i did look on the seriel# chart and couldnt find a match. i know now it is a 20 in frame ,lined it up with one of my stingrays.i am thinking of making a nice lowrider out of it.i have a real nice 76 stingray that i stripped down to bare metal and totaly did over. i painted it an orange flame pearlcoat color, and put all new tires seat sissybar, everything pretty much.it came out beautiful.hope to do the same with this one.

Schwinn serial # charts are broken down in different ways: 1948-51 #'s have xtra letters & numbers; 1952-March '58 #'s have one letter & five digits; April 1958-64 #'s changed again w/ six digits following the letter which represents the month while the 1st digit reps the year (your trashed frame falls in this category); 1965-69 #'s consists of double letters & five digits (second letter representing the year); and the last serial # system was relocated to the right of the headtube w/ an additional digit from 1970 to '83 or '84. I have three Stingrays myself: a '76 Bicenntenial like your '64, suffers from what I call TPD (that's the Trashed Paintover Disorder), an ugly red burying the OG white soon to be restored back to the OG; and two '78's: a Scrambler that suffers from a broken left dropout and the most sloppiest TPD (a black/purple, or rather 'blurple[?]' over OG silver), and a Sky Blue Stingray that was just trashed, TPD-free, & soon to be restored as a lowrider or OG status.

I DONT THINK IT IS A MANTA RAY.I WAS THINKING IT COULD BE AN OLD CRUISER STYLE MODEL.WHEN I FOUND THE FRAME ,IT HAD RACER STYLE (LIKE ON A 10 SPEED)HANDLEBARS. THE CRANK HAS FOUR CIRCLES DESIGN.

I'm not sure of how many Grape Krates were made, but they are rare & possibly pricier than the most common Krates combined assuming its condition is like 100% immaculate (Websense won't let me view your photo).

To Stingray lovers everywhere: check out the next episode of "Everybody Hates Chris" this Thursday on UPN; I saw some Stingrays (whether they're OG's or repro is beyond me), and from 1 Stingray buff to another, let's enjoy & think back to our 'childhood' days like I will!

My Stingray was actually stolen a week after I got it for my 9th birthday behind my house in the alley because the sidewalk was being prepped for new concrete, the next week it was recovered by the police w/ Huffy rims wrapped in treadless tires, rusty ape handlebar w/ black tape for grips, a 4-hole sissy bar & ripped white banana seat added to the ugliness, the headbadge was gone, and so was my spirit. I did almost everything you could imagine (like scraping off the decals, and primered the chainguard) to keep it from getting stolen ever again.

You THINK? If it has a built-in kickstand, a 'lucky-7' or 5-slot mag chainwheel sprocket, '60's serial # stamped on the rear left dropout or '70's serial # on the headtube underneath the headbadge (the important factor), you have yourself a Schwinn Stingray; but if not, then it isn't. As far as what it's worth depends on its condition.

The $500-700 range is about right for a Stingray such as yours assuming that the original paint may have a few chips and still looks great in its original 1964 state. Actually i've seen some immaculate OG Stingrays go for thousands; in fact, to give you an idea of such a range, you can check out pictures of some on this site by clicking on to...(back in a few!)

1st ?: I've never seen Fastbacks, Krates, or even base Stingrays w/ 90-degree handles on them, but it could be possible. 2nd ?: Yes! There are several websites you can check out for 20" Schwinn repro springer forks or even sissy-bar shocks: www.luxurylowrider.com, and if you're jonesing for the OG items, check out www.memorylane-classics.com, www.mapleislandsales.com, or even www.ebay.com. Good luck!

Though it's a possibility, mostly all Stingrays came equipped w/ sparkle-grips & banana seat matching the bike color regardless of the Stingray model like my '78 Sky Blue base Stingray.

AGE / VALUE:   early 70's Schwinn bmx posted by: Ron on 10/2/2005 at 4:01:23 AM
Hi I was wonderring what the value of a Schwinn Stingray bmx bike is valued at. I understand condition means everything. This bike has wide tires front and rear with heavy duty spokes(almost like motorcycle rims). It also has flat aluminum fenders. It cost about $170.00 when I was a kid. I have never seen one like it!!!! Thanks Ron

This bike could be pretty valuable. Perhaps $500, maybe more, but its just a wild guess. I really don't know. Early BMX bikes are acquiring a strong following, but they are still not being specced on like vintage lightweights. There time is probably coming though. Regardless, the very early ones in good condition are highly desirable to the existing collector base. I'm only trying to learn about BMX bikes, so I'm no authority. Go to this website to learn all about them. http://www.vintagebmx.com/ join for free. get a name and a password and don't ask anyone what its worth. they are purists and don't like that question. a good group like here. check the pull down menu under BMX Museum at the site and look at bikes from the period of your bike. They probably have a Schwinn just like yours.
