AGE / VALUE:   Huffy Wrangler: Should it be saved? posted by: D.C. Wilson on 10/2/2005 at 2:27:56 AM
Yellow Huffy Wrangler with a banana seat. Original. Plastic fenders. This seems like one of the crummiest banana seat bikes that was ever made. Should this thing be saved for $5.00 or allowed to disappear into the dumpster?

Technically it may be worthless but from a sentimental standpoint it is priceless. This is the first bike I ever had as well as a lot of people who grew up in the late 70's and early 80's. I was amazed to find someone who still had one. Should you decide to part with it please let me know.

i was watching tv tonight, and there was a movie called "the sandlot 2".its a movie about these kids in the 1970s who play baseball in an old messed up ballpark.anyway,in this movie, all the kids are riding stingrays and krates.one of the bikes even has a sidecar.they show the bikes pretty much all through the movie.its cool to see so many of these bikes all at the same time.brings back memories of my days as akid growing up in the 70s and having a couple of these bikes myself.so, check out this movie if you want to see some cool old bikes.the movie takes place in 1972.

MISC:   3 speed hub on a CCM? posted by: Levon on 9/18/2005 at 4:34:20 AM
I was recently cleaning an old hub that was the stock one on a CCM bike I have. The hub still worked fine but the rim was rusted and poked holes in my tube so I retired it for a while until I could fix that problem (Hockey ape!). Well after removing a bunch of grease and dirt off the outside of the hub and revealing still awesome chrome I looked at words stamped on it which read: 3 speed hub and then had a serial number under it. Now that I know I have this little treasure in my possesion I'd like to know how to fix it! I'm wondering if anyone out there would be able to tall me the basics of how these suckers work and if it is possible to fix.

There's no cables comeing from it but there is a hole in the axle where it must go.

The hub is fine the way it is. It turns, coasts and works like any other wheel as is right now. I just want to tap into the ease of three gears.

I'm pretty sure this is the original hub for this bike. (and by the rust I'm sure the original rim too)

Thanks for all the help and I'll get that serial number tomorrow to see if that helps anyone.

CCM, eh? I would think that would be equipped with a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed... but am puzzled as to that not being very apparant on the hub shell. So... possibly a Shimano? Look closesly for the Shimano 3-speed symbol: "333" somewhere on the hub.

If it's a Sturmey-Archer, there would be an indicator chain the screws into that hole on the end. Along with hex-nut "shell" that goes over the end that the chain runs through.

If it's the Shimano, then there's a pushrod that inserts into that hole... and a bellcrans assembly that affixes to the end of the axle to operate the pusrod.

Poke around on the oldroads site here... I'm sure if there are not actual pages with descriptions, etc., there are links. Sheldon Brown's website should also have a plethora of info on your hub.

Nice find!

Regards,

Larry "Boneman" Bone

I found the Shimano 333 on the hub and at the moment I'm trying to find the peice that I know what on the bike when I fished it out of a dumpster. I don't think it survived the move sadly and was tossed with a lot of junk that was in the garage. I know what it looks like and hopefully will be able to find and install one. Thanks for all your help.

MISC:   Sting-ray rim/tire ? posted by: Dan on 9/15/2005 at 6:48:43 AM
I have a '67 Sting-ray the tire's say Schwinn's but the rim's have no marking's other than MFG. CO.(?). Do Schwinn tire's fit only on Schwinn rims? This is the impression I had and I was wondering if the rims on my Ray were original. They don't have that ribbed center I was expecting.

If the rims don't have the ribbed center, they're not Schwinn rims let alone original and yes to your last question of their 20" tires only fitting their rims; they're slightly larger than the average 20-inch.

I don't believe that model ever had a "name".
The style of bike is commonly referred to as the "0150".
It looks as if someone rigged the 5 speed wheel and lever
later as most had a 3 speed stick shift.
Yours is most likely a 1970/1971 as later verions did away
with the headlight (if it is stock).
Go here for a similar view.

Nice looking bike, but then I drove one about 30 (!)
years ago.

It's a 1971 Columbia. The "Million" rear tires were used in '71, and it appears to have one on it. The chainguard is missing, it would've said "columbia" with their white "nike-esque" swoosh design. Worth no more than $40.00 to a collector, but a good bike to have as a rider. Best of Luck with it.....Bob

The tires say "silver star" on them. So I could clean this up and not have to worry about losing losing value? I bought it for my first bike to restore and mostly ride and have fun with. Thanks for all the help on this!
