i understand that a lot of chopper enthusiasts harvest parts from the raleigh 20 - i'm looking for a white twenty fork. the one i've got has a pretty badly bent steer tube. if you have one you can part with, please post and/or email me at the address above, removing the spam harvest blocking text.

thanks!

Your Sky Blue Stingray was no-doubt churned out of Chicago after 1970 when all Schwinn serial #'s were moved to the headtube after being stamped on the rear left dropouts up to 1969. As far as 3-speed mechanisms go, they were available as Stingray, Deluxe Stingray, & Fastback models for '70-'71; Stingray for '72; and there were no more blue 3-speeds until '76 thru '79. Another note: Schwinn avoided using letters 'I' & 'O' to prevent confusion with numbers '1' & '0' in their serial #'s, to which there are six numbers following two letters (1st represents the month, while the 2nd reps the year), so the zero you have following the letter could be a 'Q' meaning your 3-speed is from the class of May 1979, or you can do some doublechecking by clicking on to the serial # charts on this site.

MISC:   StingRat (not a typo) Bicycle posted by: Dee on 8/16/2005 at 6:14:00 AM
When I was a kid in the early 1970's Canada, my parents gave me a "StingRat" (yes, that's Rat, not Ray) bicycle. We all referred to these bikes as "Mustang" style bikes. It was a single-speed bike with a banana seat, chopper-style handlebars, and a really cool wide, slick back tire. Other kids in the neighborhood had 3-speed StingRay bikes, but I was the only kid with a StingRat and it was the only bike I ever saw with a slick back tire. My parents can't recall where they bought the bike and I am forever telling people this bike really did exist. I loved that bike so much and would still have it to this day I'm sure, but it was stolen from my school even though I had it locked up (I'm still scarred by that event :D) Have any of you ever heard of a StingRat? If so, who made it, etc.?

All I know is mine's from a garage sale. It's a 3speed,redline treaded back tire(and I have original parts).Abused by an intoxicated 38yr old kid occasionally, it will be fixed up nice eventually.

Andy,

That's so cool that you have an actual StingRat! Based on the info in your post, I found out that Northern Cycle was started in Vancouver in 1964 and is now called Norco. I tried to go to their website at www.norco.com, but it's not responding at the moment. Whatever it takes, tho, I'm going to contact them and find out if they made my StingRat :) BTW, if you want to post a pic, you just have to upload it to the web and include the URL to it in your post. If you don't know how to do that, just email it to me (click my name in this post) and I'll find someplace to put it so others can see it). Thanks again for responding to my post!

Hey Andy,

I found your pics of your StingRat in the pictures database. Awesome! That's definitely the badge the I had on my bike too. I did manage to call the folks at Norco (formerly Northern Cycle) in Vancouver and spoke to one of the employees who'd been there back in the 1960's...but alas, he couldn't remember them making any StingRats! He said he wasn't there from the beginning of the company, so he wasn't ruling it out. I'll have to call the guy again and point him to your pics of your bike...maybe that'll jog his memory banks. :) Thanks again for posting those pics.

Hey! I recently bought an old Northern Cycle bike from a kind of... bicycle graveyard (Not a Stingrat, a "HUSKY"??)
It was not in working condition at the time but I am in the process of fixing it up. But I have since hit a roadblock; the coaster brakes used on this bike are really really unique, so finding replacement parts or newer coasters of the same size which can substitute these odd brakes is really difficult.
I was wondering if you guys found anything out about your specific model of bike (since i am having trouble doing so) and how you did it
Google has been useless to me.

p.s. My serial # is A337
At least... I'm assuming that's it since I can't find any other numbers
