AGE / VALUE:   Information on a bike posted by: Andrew H. on 4/19/2005 at 4:40:22 AM
Hello All,

I have found this old junker, I am including a photo. It appears to be an italian bike. I am wondering if it is restorable. It looked like the rims where sitting in a puddle for a long time. What would be the best way to remove the rust from them?

Thank you...

I do not know why it is putting a single quota that should be a tilda which is above the single quote.

Well, for some reason this site does that to certain characters. I did see the machine (by putting the tilde in there in place of the apostrophe).

Later!

As to the condition of the rims... OUCH! But... the front appears to have a very nice drum brake, so definitely I would do what I could to clean them up.

As rusted as they are... and it's somewhat hard to tell but they look rough.... Is there any signs of chrome under that rust? You may have to go the naval-jelly, stripping route and paint them up silver... then clearcoat over the silver to make the presentable.

Good luck!

Yep, it seems anything with a tilde gets changed to a single quote. Can this be fixed?

AGE / VALUE:   Clueless newbie posted by: JT on 4/18/2005 at 6:50:46 PM
Picked up an old bike at an estate sale for 3 bucks. Schwinn plate on the front, with nubers where the back weel is bolted on AND different ones under the crank. They don't seem to match anything on the Schwinn serial number list I'm starting to wonder if this is an actual Schwinn. Anway, the numbers on the rear are: 184706
The numbers under the crank are: 6 15 (there is a little space between the 6 and the 15. The color is sort of a yellowish gray, but there are traces of green in the seams and under the posts. I can't tell if the grey or the green is the original color. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Greetings JT and welcome to the fold!

Sounds like you may be on your way to acquiring what I call O BAD! (Olde Bicycle Acquisition Disorder)

Anyhow... anything else on this velocipede that would indicate what it is? A name perhaps on the chainguard? What size tyres / wheels, what type of frame, seat, etc.? Gearing? Brakes?

Good luck with the "new" machine. Fer 3 bucks... ya just can't go wrong!

Regards.

Definitely not a Schwinn because I don't recall ever seeing serial #'s on the bottom crank of any Schwinn, but as far as finding out the original color, disassemble either the crank or headtube area.

MISC:   Looking for info posted by: Bill on 4/16/2005 at 9:42:46 PM
Hi everyone, I'm just looking for some info on a chopper style bike from the late '60's early 70's. I don't remember what it was called, or who made it, but it used to be advertised in comic books, and the ad itself was done as a comicbook story with a bunch of kids helping the town mayor by using these bikes to escort him in a parade. If I remember right, the bike had the same basic styling as the raleigh Chopper, but the handlebars ran straight up & down without any curving at the ends at all. I'm hoping to find the name of the bike, manufacturer and possibly a website with pics & more info. Can anyone here help?

Thanks,
Bill

AGE / VALUE:   Schwinn Stingray posted by: Candy on 4/16/2005 at 7:47:28 PM
Hey there.I just picked up a Schwinn Stingray along with 3 low-end modern mountain bikes with duct taped sign saying FREE. Anyway, friend says it looks like a 64 model, but what I can make of the sn does not show up on the schwinn sn list. I had hubby look at it and he gets the same number: Can you help? Pic attached. I'm very new to the vintage bike world, but have been a cyclist for 4-5 years. I'm on the hunt for the perfect balloon tire cruiser, but in the meantime having fun searching the swap meet for any worthwhile finds. Thanks!

Sorry, forgot to post sn: A3625?? Definitely only one alpha with A362 being easy to read. Bike may have been white at one time, hard to tell, but appears to have all the original stuff on it.

Although A3 dates your frame to January 1963, colorwise Sky Blue, as is the official color name of your Stingray, wasn't a standard color until 1964, and white was only available in 1976 as a Bicentennial model w/ decals; otherwise you have an original milestone.
