I recently got a sears and roebuck free spirit bicycle. Does anyone have any information on it? It looks like it was from the late 60's or early 70's with a banana seat and ape hangers. I'd like to know also if it's worth anything or if I should just go ahead and paint it? Anything on it would be helpful. Thanks, Tank

I have recently acquired a Free Spirit Bicycle that has an odd way of moving. You place the front valve stem down and the rear stem facing up to obtain an up and down riding motion. I cannot find any info on this type of bike. Does anyone know what this is?

I just picked up a copper/bronze colored Canadian made 12 speed Free Spirit ladied bike. 26 X 1 3/8 tires, gumwall.Shimano Tourney components Rides excellent , has a very few minor scratches and needs cable retainers (I just taped them to test drive) It has Cottered 3 peice crank set, but in the large bottom bracket, colour keyed pinstriped fenders, and "north Road" style bars.Canadian made Chrome rims in EXCELLENT condition
It will look a lot better when I get it cleaned up and a good coat of wax on it.
This bike is at least 30 years old as it still says "Simpson Sears" and The Bay bought Simpsons in 1978.

Waterloo Ontario if anyone is interested.
Fair value? I know "step through" frames are generaly not worth as much as "Men's bikes".

I just got a maroon metallic sears roebuck free spirit bike at the flea market for $20. it is probably from the 70s. it has a headlight and a taillight. the lights run off of the rotation of the front tire. it also has a mile counter. it has a single post seat, there is a back rack with 2 big baskets attatched. i do not know exactly what year it is but i want to find out if it is worth anything.

Neighbor just gave me copper/brown/orange "womens" 3 speed Free SPirit. Its flawless because they kept it inside and never rode it. The white sidewalls on tires have yellowed but other than that it looks brand new. Anyhow, as I peruse all the net sources I find very little info about what was probably a pretty popular bike. At least I think it was a popular bike.

The first Free SPirit mention I come up with is 1976. DOes that jibe with info floating around out there? I'd be happy to share pix. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE:MISC:sears & roebuck free spirit bicycle posted by Jon on 12/12/2007 at 12:15:48 PM
I have what I think might be a Free Spirit bike. The frame is quite nice but has been repainted by an amateur and unfortunately the riveted-on headbadge was removed. It's a typical "diamond" frame, 27" wheels, ten speeds, center pull brakes, SR three piece crank (non cottered) and the lower half of the fork blades are chromed. There is a very faint outline of the headbadge in the paint and from it's shape I'm guessing it might be a Free Spirit (or Freespirit). Any info or photos of what a legit Free
Spirit bike and/or headbadge like I describe would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

I recently bought a Sears & Roebuck FreeSpirit Brittany Maroon Metallic three speed 26", at a thrift shop for $35. Rides nice. The Sears & Roebuck sticker has 11-83 on the end of it. Can I assume it was made in Nov. 1983?

I have a very nice classic forest green Free Spirit bicycle with 10 speeds and Front & rear hand brakes along with a chrome rear rack and a chrome side paper rack. The bike rides and shifts fine with Shimano Posi-Tron shifters mounted on the stem which helps make shifting easier along with a big padded seat with springs for comfort. If any interest make an offer.

In cleaning up in the Barn I found a White 1976 Free Spirit 10 spd. mens Bike. Has the blue/red stripe decals. On the rear fender Decal barely reads June 30th 1976 and below is 0030 number. Has the Sears and Roeb. decals on front.
The origional seat is missing along with the rear reflector. The chrome is good on fenders, but handle bars are rust damage. I feel that maybe this was a touring bike for 1976 Olympics. Could you tell me more about it and if it is worth anything, I saved it from going to the dumps.

Hi, I garbage picked a Sears Freespirit 10 speed. I have usualy garbage picked Swinn bikes for my family so we have never needed to go bicycle shoping a I have no idea when this bike was being sold. The reson I picked it up was I was surprised to see a mechanical disk brake on the rear wheel. Unfotunetly it also has the infumose Positron shifter and it just came apart on me. I liked the bike befor the shifter went south and am glade there seems to be plenty of replacment parts but I would like to know if there is asorce to look up the s/n so I can date this bike? I understand Huffy, Murry and perhaps Giant has made the Freespirit for Sears. Also any info on the Shimano disk break would be nice. this is a 27" wheeled bike. Thanks for reading all this.

MISC:Columbia serial number location posted by: Klaus on 5/13/2006 at 4:44:08 PM
I recently obtained a Columbia Twosome tandem bicycle. Am trying to locate the serial number. I found a number on the right (chain) side rear drop out, near the axel nut, but it only includes numerical digits, no letters, so it does not match any Columbia chart I have found. I have checked under each bottom bracket, but no luck. Does anyone know of a Columbia serial number that does not include letters, or can point me to a different location on the bicycle for the correct serial number? Thanks in advance.

First, let me say that I am very new to this hobby, so I'm certainly no expert, and I could very well be wrong.
That being said; as I stated in my most recent post, I am a fan of Columbias, and have owned a few.
On the newer bikes that I have owned (late 1970's, early 1980's) I believe the serial number is located on the side of the head tube. Mine have also had no letter before the number, so maybe they stopped doing that on the later models.
I also don't know any way to determine the production year on these newer bikes, since the only charts I've seen only go up to 1972.
Good luck, and enjoy your Columbia!

If it has a 3-speed Sturmey-Archer rear hub, it will have a two digit date code on it. (example: '71' is 1971)

Hi all.
I just rescued another "run of the mill" old bike. This time, a Columbia Sports III. (I'm a Columbia fan. Possibly because I had them as a kid, or because where they were built is local for me.)
In any case, I wanted to run the serial number to determine when it was built, and found two different serial numbers; one stamped over the other. Not above, but actually OVER the other; making it somewhat difficult to read either one.
I was able to make out an "R" serial number which would make the bike a 1967 model according to the chart.
I was just wondering if anybody else has ever encountered a "double struck" serial number such as this, and if you have any ideas as to how or why it may have happened.

Thanks much.

I just got an old Columbia Sports III and would love to find out in what year it was built. Where do you find the serial number? And where would I find the chart with the year numbers on it. Please send me an e-mail.

Thanks a bunch!

Like any potential antique or collectible, condition matters a lot.
You need to provide more information and pictures.

Hello Everyone,
I have an old Schwinn tandem bike I think from the early 60's. I looked for the serial number on the Oldroads serial number page but it wasn't there. Can anyone help me find out when this bike was made? The serial number is EE18693. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MISC:british chain driven tricycle posted by: christopher McNamara on 4/5/2006 at 5:21:44 AM
Hi all,

I'm trying to find information on something that I had as a child. I lived in England for a year in 1970 and my parents purchased a tricycle for me at a junk shop. It was red, with gold trim, it was chain driven with air tires and it had a trunk with a latch at the back. Does anybody know who might have made such a trike? I would love to get my hands on one (or two) for my twin boys. It's probably my most memorable toy and yet I don't know who made it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had on of those too, until some swine nicked it!

I was too young to take much notice of manufacturers names back then, but I would think Triang and Raleigh would be good places to start your search. Pashley still make childrens trikes, but no boot i'm afraid.

Try a google search for "Raleigh winkie", or mail me off list and i'll mail you a picture. No idea where you would find one now apart from ebay though.
