WANTED:   Schwinn twinn posted by: Tim on 11/10/2009 at 6:13:10 AM
Has anyone ever upgraded the derailer on a 5 spd Twinn? I keep having problems at the worst possible times ( like when going up a steep incline) and I`ve had it.

There's no reason why you couldn't swap in a good-shifting 70s Suntour. It should shift a lot better than the standard derailer.

Suntour? I`ve seen that name before. Did that come standard on high-end Schwinn`s?

Suntour derailers were used in the 70s on just about everything below the absolute top-end racing bikes. Better shifting than anything European. You should be able to find a little-used Suntour GT/VGT at any bike shop that's been around for a few years. There are zillions of them.

I'm trying to find out more information on this bike and how much it may be worth. It's pretty old and not in that bad of shape. We still ride it, it is a single speed.

Hi, I have an awesome bycicle for some time now and I just love it's a Penny Brand (1969), a low rider chopper bycicle. But recently I had problems with it. I need to change the crank link of the left pedal and a cotter pin but I don't know where to buy these parts. I'm currently living at The Netherlands so it has to be a web page. Please help me!!!

loosescrews.com has cotters for cranks. If you're in the Netherlands, this should be something any bike shop can help you with, since so many Dutch bikes use cottered cranks. Good luck.

Hi, I just brought this tandem home. I was told by the previous owner that it is a Schwinn. The badge is missing. I cannot find a picture to match this frame.

Any info on this tandem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nothing about it is very Schwinn-like. "Schwinn" seems to be used by many people to describe any middleweight or ballooner, even when it's badged with another brand!

You're unlikely to sell it at a profit. Fix it up and ride it; you'll have a lot of fun.

MISC:   Help Old Sears Folding bike Need Info or direction posted by: rogerisright on 8/22/2009 at 6:28:23 AM
I just inherited (among other things) an old folding bicycle, the only real marking on it is the front badge on the steering stem where the metal badge says: "SEARS"
This bike is held together with two wing nuts and is in great shape and fully fendered front and rear with the rear having a small lunch pail or cargo rack narrow and about 16" long. This bike has small tires and handle bars that point towards the rider and is in near perfect shape... any idea how old it is or what it is worth if I wanted to sell it ...here is a picture of a bike that looks like this bike buit is not this exact bike

You can probably find out its age by consulting old Sears catalogs, which are on microfilm at most major research libraries.
Mass-produced folders aren't extremely valuable. Raleighs sell best, for over $300 sometimes. Others are worth less than that. RV, airplane, and boat people like them because they're easy to carry along. Newer folders (Brompton, e.g.) are lighter and more expensive.

Is that a Shimanp 3-speed? Many Japanese components have date codes. Check component makers and look them up on the component page on vintage-trek.com

It is a Shimano 3 speed. I havent tried to date it but I think I can safely say it is a 71 or 72. After scrutinizing the label on the passenger seat post it appears to be a 72 munich commerative.
So I cleaned her up a tad. Got her to shift and stop...damn this thing rides like a dream. Had a Twosome growing up that was a tank.
Sadly the paint appears to be purposely distressed. You know like when they want to give pine a fashionable dent here and there. Oh well...it is a great ride for the 49.00
